Vehicle Detail

1971 Datsun 240z, original Safari Gold. 86k documented miles, purchased from original local owner approx. 10 years ago. Z then wore its original coat of paint of 30+ years of careful ownership. I embarked on a sympathetic restoration 4 years ago, as described below: Exterior: This car was exceptionally clean when I purchased it, accumulating only the usual dings and scratches a vehicle gathers through years of enjoyment. It was a very difficult decision as to respray the entire body, or try to spot in the imperfect areas. I made the decision to spray the car, but in hindsight, may have left it as-is and dealt with some slight paint variation. The body was stripped, and the very minor areas of corrosion (quarter-sized spots at the rear bottom of each front fender, and a panel replacement on the passenger quarter - could have been repaired, but wanted no filler). All glass was left in place, as I wanted to retain all of the original weatherstrip, which is virtually mint. Paint is a strong 8 out of 10, needing only a final wetsand/buff to remove some clear coat imperfections, and touch up some areas that weren't buffed perfectly near the lower driver rocker. These imperfections won't even show up in the pics, and unless you are under good flourescent lighting, the clear appears perfect as well. Perfect is a relative term, and I believe in full disclosure, hence the criticalness of my evaluation of the paint. In addition, there is some MINOR activity near the fuel filler and the driver rocker - again, couldn't even capture in a photograph, but feel compelled to mention. Easily rectified during the wetsand, given that the paint is relatively fresh (1.5 years old). Rear hatch area, spare tire, and floors are MINT and original, have factory sealant still on them. All badging, chrome, lenses, etc are either MINT originals (as most are the originals) or NOS replacements (front bumper, rear center, hatch emblem, etc.). Wheels are original steelies with date stamps, restored and painted as per factory (gray centers, flashed black rim edge), along with a set of "d" caps that are almost mint (minor flaking to a couple caps on the center gray painted area - hardly noticable - again, full disclosure). Tires are brand new. The car resides on these, but also included, as pictured, are a set of American Racing rims, purchased by the original owner circa 1973, with Yokohama rubber. A BRE front spoiler is also included (as seen in some of the photographs, along with the alternate wheels). Interior: Exceptional. Original. I had the seats reupholstered with skins sourced from the Nissan Z restoration program a few years back, they are perfect. A bit of a shame, as the originals were almost mint save for a small tear in the drivers seat bottom. Replacement vinyl did not match, so we did them as a set. Original material is included as well - they were so nice I saved them. Also discretely installed a tuner/cd/Ipod unit behind the passenger's seat. No cutting involved. Original Hitachi AM radio with power antenna still resides in dash. Added Datsun logo floormats. Otherwise 100% original. Mint dash, everything works. Great unrestored wheel and shift knob. Headliner perfect. Original carpets near mint, mild sun fading. Diamond vinyl very good, no tears or lifting. Original glass. Door, hatch and under hood rubber bits/weatherstripping all new or nice originals. Doors shut perfectly, great gaps everywhere. Mechanical: Original 2.4, never out of car. Idles perfectly, manual choke, original SU's, etc. All fluids, belts, hoses, rubber, etc. fresh. New slave and clutch master cylinders. Runs great, excellent gearbox. Brakes well, all shoes fresh. Other than detailing and an Optima cell battery, nothing is changed from the factory. The battery tray and brake hell holes are perfect, no rust anywhere. I could have removed the factory 'undercoating' that can be seen in the engine compartment photos, but feel the car would lose its sense of patina and originality. I decided to leave that decision to the next owner. In summary, runs out well, no apparent issues. My only 'to-dos' include new struts all around, and maybe a stainless exhaust - it has a turbo muffler now. If I keep the car through the winter, I will tackle these two items. Also would like to do a full front bushing replacement, although originals are still in fine shape, and the car tracks very true. I wouldn't hesitate to drive the car anywhere, but suggest caution to the new owner, as I have only put approx. 300 miles on the car since its repaint. Porsches and children have eroded my driving pleasure time..... Other Notes: This is a very strong #2 car, one that I have enjoyed immensely. I had it at the Pittsburgh Vintage Gran Prix along with my 911, and the Z was a huge hit. Any time I was near the car, people were inquiring. Great color, perfect stance, highly original. She is NOT perfect - she is original in many areas and has a slight patina in others, but that is her beauty. I drive my vehicles, and as a result, there may be a nick here, or a tiny run there, that I am not that concerned about. Cars, as in life, revolve around experiences with these creatures - after all, they are just pieces of metal. All documentation included - original window sticker, manuals, shop manuals (2 volumes), radio manual, etc. Have original owners' contact info as well. I HIGHLY encourage personal viewing, and will do all I can to facilitate. Car is located 15 minutes from Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. CALL ME for details, questions, inquiries, etc. I am happy to discuss this fine specimen. 724.417.0400. Jody. Leave message. Other Other Notes: Shipping is at the discretion of the BUYER.
