It was sold new to a Doctor in Portland and then to the current owner that has owned and loved this car for the past 45 years. It has been in the Portland area all its life but is now in located in Southern California in Ventura. This “Ponton W-128 series” Mercedes is rare in all body styles but the SE fuel injected version of the coupe had a total production of 830 cars and 1960 was the final year of this body style. ID # is 128037-10-002684. For reference go to a very informative website: www.mbzponton.org This car is totally complete with all its original components including original manuals and is running and drivable. I had the pleasure of driving it recently around the neighborhood and it drove well with the clutch and brakes working properly. It has had recent fuel tank and pump work and some brake work done. It has been sitting with little use for a number of years and should be serviced from front to back for highway reliability. Tires are very old. The car is the 134 cu. in. straight six cylinder engine with a four speed standard transmission with a column shift. It has the regular clutch and not the Hydrak system. The engine runs smoothly and the Bosch fuel injection system works well. The body of this car is extremely good with no rust in any of the fenders, doors or floor and trunk pans. The spare tie well is good. There is some rust below the rear bumper as shown in the photos. This is a straightforward repair on an otherwise rust free car. The seats are original and have some wear but have a nice lived in look. The headliner has some stains as do the original wool carpets. It also has the optional fold down rear seat for extra luggage room in the back. The door panel pouches and door pulls are very attractive features of this luxury interior. The full leather seats are very comfortable and recline. The dash instruments are complete and appear to be working correctly. There is also the original Becker Europa radio which does not work. This car was a luxury touring car with Mercedes exceptional build quality and is known for its smooth ride and handling with more than adequate power from the fuel injected six cylinder engine. It had a top speed of 99 MPH. The exterior was refinished many years ago and it has had a color change to blue from its original 608H Ivory color. The paint is very chipped and is beyond patina unless you want to drive this car as an unrestored garage find. A lot of the chrome is still good but the bumpers need rechroming. The Hella fog lamps are very nice. Overall this is a rare car in very good unrestored condition. Most of these cars are very rusty but this one is a good solid car that could be cosmetically restored or simply driven as it is. Personally I would redo the exterior and headliner and keep the interior the way it is and enjoy the car for many years. I previously owned a 1960 220SE Cabriolet which I sold last year so we are familiar with these cars. We have a full service restoration shop and can undertake any aspect of the restoration of this car for a new owner. We work with European clients and clients from all over the US.
