This car offers all of the bells and whissles imaginable for a car built in 1990 with a V12 motor that will give you the power to perform with the other European Exotic sports cars like Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s! Here is a little more information about the Jaguar XJS line. Built as a luxury grand tourer, the Jaguar XJ-S/XJS was billed as the replacement to the legendary Jaguar E-Type/XK-E. Released in ’75 and based on the XJ Saloon, the XJS never quite attained the same sporting image as the E-Type. Although the Jaguar is a very competent grand tourer, with production running right up until ’96 when the Jaguar XK8 taking the XJS’s place in the Jag’ line-up The Mark I XJS was powered by a 5.3L V12 engine that powered the car enough for it to be able to hold its own against such out-and-out sports cars as Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s, with 60mph taking just 6.5 seconds in the Jag’. Initially the car was offered with a choice of manual or automatic transmission, although the manual option was dropped soon into production. Despite criticism of styling (especially the ‘flying buttresses’ behind the rear window) the car’s image was aided by appearances in TV shows such as The New Avengers. This did help boost sales a little, although Jaguar dealers reported slow sales. The fuel crisis had coincided with the release of the XJS, so there was little demand for a 5.3L V12 tourer. This promoted Jaguar to give the engine an over-haul in ’81, improving fuel economy and also improving performance while they were at it. The Jaguar XJS was now the fattest automatic-transmission car in production with a top end of 168mph and 60mph arriving in just 5.7 seconds. ’83 saw Jaguar release a cabriolet XJS, using a new 3.6L Jaguar AJ6 engine. The Jaguar XJ-SC/XJSC was purely a 2 seater and came with a removable, middle hard-top much like the Porsche Targa. Initially the Jaguar XJSC was a 6-cylinder car, however in ’85 Jaguar began offering the V12 for the XJSC. 1988 saw Jaguar introduce a fully convertible version of the XJS in place of the previous Targa style roof (previously a convertible XJS had been on sale at Jaguar dealers, although these were built by a 3rd party, The Hess & Eisenhardt coachbuilding firm). Jaguar also introduced the option of a manual ‘box again in the XJS range with the release of the XJSC. To celebrate Jaguar’s win at Le Mans, a special limited Jaguar XJR-S model was released in 1989, using a 6L engine. 1991 saw the XJS being given a power increase due to the engine’s capacity being increased. The lower end cars were now 6-cylinder 4L engines and the 5.3L V12 was increased to a 6L V12. A styling overhaul was also carried out and a 2+2 convertible was offered, all these changes resulting in ’91+ models being known as ‘face-lift’ models. Over time the Jaguar XJS has moved status from ‘used’ to ‘collectable’. However most examples remain in the hands of non-enthusiasts so many erodible parts are in need of replacement. Thankfully the XJS is widely supported by owners groups and enthusiasts’ clubs, with some parts still available to buy from Jaguar dealers.
