2008 Dodge Nitro SXT The 2008 Dodge Nitro is the small sport-utility entry for the Dodge brand. The Nitro shares most of it components with the second-generation Jeep Liberty, but whereas the Liberty seeks the off-road route less traveled, the Nitro places on-road driving ahead of off-road readiness. The Nitro also distinguishes itself from its Jeep brother with unique, squared-off sheet metal; the signature Dodge “crosshair” grille; a different dashboard design; and an available 210-hp V-6 with 235 pound-feet of torque. The 3.7L engine gets 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Standard equipment on the Nitro SXT includes chrome 17-inch steel wheels, a roof rack, air-conditioning, a six-speaker CD stereo, an auxiliary audio input, satellite radio, body-color exterior trim, privacy glass, a compass/outside temperature gauge, a slide-out cargo floor with tie-down points, and full power accessories. The Dodge's spaciousness is a product of its long 108.8-inch wheelbase. It shares a platform with the redesigned 2008 Jeep Liberty but is slightly larger overall. Like the Liberty, the Nitro uses uni-body construction, but has a live-axle rear suspension, a standard rear-wheel-drive configuration (with dual-range four-wheel drive) and a 3.7-liter V6 engine. None of these attributes would be surprising if the Nitro were a focused off-roader, but in actuality, Dodge has tuned it for street duty. Legroom is ample for adults in the backseat. There are 32.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat. With the rear seats folded, there are 65.2 cubic feet of cargo space available. The front passenger seat can also fold forward to aid in carrying long items. A 115-volt outlet is standard, thereby enhancing the Nitro's usefulness at the campsite Safety Antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control and full-length side curtain airbags are standard on the 2008 Dodge Nitro. The stability control system includes a trailer sway control feature. Rear parking sensors are optional. In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Nitro earned a perfect five stars for all frontal- and side-impact categories. Four-wheel antilock brakes are standard. The Nitro adds a traction control system that applies those brakes to wheels that slip during acceleration to get them grabbing the road again. An electronic stability system with rollover mitigation is also standard, as are side curtain airbags. The suspension is an independent design up front and a five-link, solid-axle rear arrangement. Dodge says it's tuned to provide a level ride when loaded or towing. Properly equipped, the Nitro can tow up to 5,000 pounds regardless of drive train.
