Vehicle Detail

This is a very nearly all-original 1974 Porsche 914 1.8 Liter with JUST UNDER 52K ORIGINAL MILES - complete with stacks of dealer paperwork showing all the proper maintenance and tender loving care this 'teener has received for the past 37 years. Great on gas, this engine runs super strong and 5-speed trans is smooth, braking is strong and straight. My mechanic has given it a complete once over with a clean bill of health and has recommended I keep the car. I purchased this little gem locally from the original owner this past summer and I would dearly love to keep it - but my wife has laid down the law. This is the third 914 I've purchased - I absolutely love these cars - so in addition to our two regular commuter cars we are quickly running out of space. Our loss will be your gain. Be prepared to be stopped constantly by passersby wanting to know all about the car. I have posted one tandem photo showing both this '74 1.8 and the '75 2.0 which is the 914 I am keeping. Local inspections are absolutely welcome and you will be hard pressed to find a better 914 of this vintage with this low original mileage and condition. Fuchs alloy wheels, lots of tread left on the tires. Some small areas of the weatherstripping is showing its age a bit but everything is still snug and watertight. Undercarriage is completely rust-free, no rust in battery tray or anywhere else in the engine compartment or elsewhere on the car apart from the occasional small speck here and there. Front and rear trunks are dry and tight. Targa top is in beautiful shape. There are two blemishes on the paint - see detail pictures in the gallery. Interior is in near perfect condition, with the exception of a small 1-inch split in the typical area of the dash near the passenger side - see detail photo. AM/FM/ Cassete Stereo (this is the only aftermarket piece I know of) is working but pretty basic and I would replace that first thing in addition to getting the paint spots professionally touched up. Some aging in small areas of the weatherstripping as would be expected in a 37 year old car, but everything is still tight and snug and leak free. Car passed Maryland Inspection and Emissions Check within the past year with flying colors. Original 1974 DC Title (now voided of course - quite a piece of nostalgia), current Maryland Title (clear, no liens), original dealer window sticker, original owner's manual and bill of sale are all included. This is not a show car but it could be with a little work - it shows the usual minor cosmetic wear and tear that any 1974 car would present. It absolutely deserves a good home and a caring owner who will continue to pamper it. Serious bidders only, please. Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs - no warranty is expressed or implied. I reserve the right to sell this car locally and to end this auction early without notice. On Aug-24-11 at 17:24:47 PDT, seller added the following information: I have made a rough little handheld video that you can check out. I will try to make a smoother one this weekend after the car gets a nice wash, chamois and vacuum. I'll also provide a road test video if I can and if the weather is good. Sorry it is a little jerky but my tripod was back at the studio. Anyway this is how it looks as a daily driver - just came home from work. She will clean up much more nicely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L37m8ZZoykOn Aug-24-11 at 20:08:21 PDT, seller added the following information: There is a nice flurry of bid activity since I posted that simple video clip. Perhaps that indicates that you really need to see the car to fully appreciate it - and as I say your local inspection is welcome. You and/or your mechanic are encouraged to take a look prior to the Sunday night close. Recent Odometer Issue: completely repaired now, but I feel that full disclosure is the best policy. The 52K mileage as stated is still valid, but here is the scoop. Some of you may have recognized this car as posted on eBay just about the three weeks ago. The reason I had to cancel the listing late into week was that the odometer had seized up - Murphy's Law for sure, and at the worst possible and most embarrassing time of course. So I alerted my local bidders immediately as to the problem, giving them of course the option to back out of the bid and to wait and see what was up with the gauge. Two of them are still actively bidding in spite of the hiccup. The next morning I was in my mechanic's shop to get the problem resolved ASAP. At first he thought it was just a cable connection, but it turned out that the odo had itself seized up. So he packed it up and overnighted it to a specialty shop in Palo Alto that deals with these gauges. This particular shop can repair them while still preserving the mileage on the clock. It's now re-installed and seems to be working fine. So the actual mileage as stated is still valid - if any at all, there may be somewhere between 80-90 elapsed miles lost from the time it froze to the time I discovered the problem. But since a couple of former bidders are still involved, I do not want them to benefit from any information from the prior listing that is not open to all current bidders equally. Although the lost miles are next to non-existent, I know that the odometer reading is a critical factor and I do not want any hard feelings or disappointments due to any unfair advantage or lack of full disclosure. Of course, if there is any hesitation from any of the bidders to date over this issue, I completely understand -- the odo can be such a sensitive issue and rightfully so. You would not be expected to honor your bid if there is any lingering doubt on your part whatsoever. But please rest assured that this is a true 52K car, and I hope you will continue to have confidence in the car as presented. You and/or your mechanic are welcome to see and drive the car by prior appointment and of course to review all the service records. A couple of bidders have requested some undercarriage photos and I will see if can get those up in the next day or two. Also with luck I can get a road test video up as well, so that you can see it and hear it in all five gears - plus the breaking and steering action. Pray for good weather on Saturday. A number of repeat questions are popping up asking if this is the original paint - the answer is yes with the two small fixes as noted in the description and the two blemishes shown in the photos that still need attention. Thanks for all the questions and for your interest in the car. On Aug-25-11 at 19:14:03 PDT, seller added the following information: THE JOY OF TEENERS: Here is a little homemade video I put together last fall while fooling around with iMovie on my MacBook Pro:http://gallery.me.com/mhoule1951#101999/Holiday-20Road_Route-20914&bgcolor=black In the spirit of full disclosure, both the still shots and the video footage (shot with a Flip) at the end have been color-boosted to increase the saturation. So the color of the car is not quite that deep or vivid. By comparison, the other video listed above on YouTube as well as all the photos in the eBay gallery for this listing are completely original and unretouched - so these will give you the best idea about the true color and condition of the car. For my money, this red and black combination is the best of all the 914 color schemes. As I say I get stopped about 3 or 4 times minimum for a chat about the car every day I take it out. Sorry, but the wife does not convey with the car. I plan on hanging on to her for as long as she is willing to hang on to me. On Aug-26-11 at 05:39:18 PDT, seller added the following information: A lot of guys have asked for some undercarriage shots, so here they are. The floors and almost all of the underbody look amazingly clean. The usual surface rust issues with the exhaust, but you probably have several years left of service left on that - or you could replace it at your option. It's a stock exhaust but I still love the sound, especially when you are winding things out a little in the higher gears. This car still really scoots. Just cut and paste this link into your web browser: http://gallery.me.com/mhoule1951#102234 As you can see by the couple of additional shots, BCC Automotive in Bethesda MD works on loads of high end cars. "Mike the Mechanic" is the owner and a wonderfully thorough and fair guy who knows his imports inside and out. Already by 7:00 AM today his shop had two Ferraris, two Porsches and a Maserati all lined up for service, but yesterday I saw his crew doing an oil change on an old beat up Datsun wagon, so he keeps things affordable for all the neighborhood folks. Some of his retail neighbors might complain since the line of cars sometimes causes minor traffic jams in our little town - but, hey you can't fight success. That's his assistant Nary posing with my 914. If you are within a hundred miles of this shop, I can highly recommend Mike and his crew.
