Vehicle Detail
1970 Buick GS 455 Convertible 4-Speed VIN # 446670H309018 1 of 126 ever built You are viewing a most desirable Buick Gran Sport (Skylark platform A body) muscle car that is fully documented, numbers matching, and extremely rare. Codes, stampings, and production numbers: Please see the photos of the #matching motor and transmission stampings; original Production Order Body – Final sheet; Wholesale Car Order form, and other documents verifying this authentic, rare car. VIN breaks down as follows: 4 = Buick; 46 = GS455; 67 = 2 door convertible; 0 = 1970. The VIN alone indicates the car is a true GS455 convertible! A total of 20,096 GS cars were built in 1970. This is 1 of 1,184 convertible GS455 cars, so it’s rare, but there’s more…. Ultra desirable 4-speed factory transmission! – The number matching VIN is stamped in the tranny case = 40H309018. This is THE transmission that came in the car. Of the 1,184 convertibles, there were only 126 ever built with the 4-speed! How many are even left out there today? Let alone running around with the original transmission from over 40 years ago? More good news, the engine is also numbers matching – same number stamping as the transmission, exact match on VIN. This is the 455 cubic inch mill with 350 horsepower and an amazing 510 foot/lbs of torque at 2,800 rpm. When is the last time you saw # match motor and transmission in a rare convertible that wasn’t either a total basket case or a fully restored 6 figure car? Check out the photo of the original Production Order Body Final (POB) sheet Model, Body Serial Number, & VIN match exactly to car and Cowl Tag Build date of 05 12 (May 12th) match to Cowl Tag of 05B (May, 2nd week) Color J matches to Cowl paint code 69 – Burnished Saddle Unfortunately, I can’t decode the rest of this great document that indicates many other features and options – anyone out there that can, I’d love to hear from you! See the Wholesale Car Order form copy – this car is absolutely loaded with power options: 4-speed Muncie M-21 with floor mounted Hurst Shifter Dual consoles - short console with clock & console between the seats Power disc brakes, power steering, power top, power windows, power locks Space saver spare (with nice original jack, handle, etc, looks new) Rallye Ride Control Package – sway bars, boxed control arms, stabilizer bars, heavy duty shocks Forced Comfort Flow Ventilation (rare option that includes additional fans to blow air through dash vents with separate 2 speed switch on dash) Door Guards Remote outside mirror including sport mirrors (added) Power adjustable bucket drivers seat Tilt steering wheel and custom sport steering wheel Convenience Light Group Instrument Gauges (oil, temp, gas and tachometer) 15” Super Sport Wheels (excellent shape with great tires, paint, and caps) Posi traction rear axle AM/FM stereo radio ALL of these options are fully functional except the clock. It lights up but doesn’t tick. It did keep time up until very recently and quit after carpet was changed so I suspect a wire was not reconnected. As optioned, I can’t venture to say how many were built like this of the original 126 - this could be a 1 of 1. Here is the Body by Fischer Cowl Tag or Body Number Plate information: ST 70 44667 FL 1 243336 BDY TR Z189 68 E PNT 05B ST 70 = 1970; 44667 = Buick GS445 convertible (matches VIN) 243336 = body number that matches exactly to POB sheet 189 = Burnished Saddle bucket seat interior 68 = Burnished Saddle Iridescent paint (matches J code on POB sheet) 05B = May, 2nd week build date (matches POB build date 05 12) Other significant parts, codes, etc: Transmission also stamped P0C20B; P = Muncie; 0 = ’70; C = March; 20 = 20th day; B = M-21 Ratio Carburetor stamped 7040243 - correct ’70 4 Barrel 455 manual transmission Presentation & History: The car looks and drives fantastic! A real head turner with the color combination. · Paint is older but has great shine, some minor blemishes. Appears to be base/clear coat. Has great shine and really looks great. Trunk is correctly spatter painted with a correct rubber mat, jack/handle, and an original space saver spare. Under hood is very tidy including firewall, inner fenders, and core support. Correct GS air cleaner mating to the functional air-inducted hood. Correct grille, medallions, etc. All stainless and trim is in excellent shape. Tan convertible top appears brand new including glass rear window. Comes with a top boot and nice set of 4 original Buick floor mats. · Car was recently purchased from the 2nd owner of 30 years. See photo for extensive yearly registration history all the way back to the ‘80’s. Car was in Virginia from approximately’90 to ‘00, then South Carolina, until this year. · It is absolutely rust free. I see no signs of rust, bubbles, or bodywork anywhere. The bottoms of doors are fantastic, perfect trunk floor and floor pans/frame are devoid of rust that I can see. Appears all original sheet metal in tact, no sign of quarter panel replacement, door skins, or fenders. Bottoms of fenders are like new and this is usually a typical A body rust spot. Body panel alignment is great - doors, trunk, and hood all fit and close nicely. I can’t recall last time I found a car like this wearing it’s original factory panels. From the owner reports and maintenance log, including dated receipts (included with the car), neither the motor, nor transmission appear to have ever been apart. Here is a list of more major items that have been done and are documented with receipts: · Paint, upholstery, top (like new), weather strips, window sweepers, gaskets · Water pump, heater core, radiator, and hoses · Clutch including throw out bearings (engages smoothly) · Alternator, Starter, Battery · Master cylinder and Brake Booster (brand new) · Carpet (brand new) In addition to the items referenced, the car comes with the following additional original documents: Owners Manual New Vehicle Warranty booklet Accessories booklet Guardian Maintenance document. Car starts right up and runs out great. I have the timing and dwell dialed in nicely. It pulls hard, brakes evenly and steers properly. Extremely smooth shifting with new clutch and easy engagement through all of the synchronized gears including reverse. Still wearing 2 original T3 headlights. Correct factory exhaust manifolds mated to dual exhaust with a tasteful rumble. Sound great idling and when you get your foot into it, but never loud or obnoxious. No exhaust manifold or other leaks, sounds factory. No other noises, rattles, issues at all with motor or operation of the car. Power top works just like it should, as do other accessories like wipers, lights, turn signals, etc. Business Stuff: Serious buyers only please, don’t bid unless you intend to buy, are qualified and have the funds – no BS here folks, please. So far I’ve not had a single sale go south, let’s not start with this one. Bid with confidence, check my Ebay rating, been at this awhile and have been into Buick, Olds, and Pontiac muscle now for 30 years. Car is used, now 41 years old, so it’s sold as-is, without warranty of any kind, express, implied, or otherwise. Ask your questions now, come take a look in person if you want/can, study the many photos I’ve posted, and read this description, but if you bid, it’s binding. If you buy the car or win the auction, a deposit of $1K is due within 24 hours and full payment within 72 hours. We can work out those details further and arrangements for your pickup. I can hold garaged for a reasonable while as you work out shipping. Shipping is all at buyer’s expense. This is a fabulous, high driver quality example that is turn-key to enjoy the rest of the year as-is. Take to local car shows, cruises, have fun with the top down and the power of 510 ft/lbs while shifting through the smooth 4-speed. Or take it up a notch with some time and effort it’s a major show winner, easy. Based on the low production including being a 4-speed, number matching drivetrain, documentation, and southern, rust free history, the car is being offered at a reserve price that is very reasonable. Several recent sales for automatics in similar condition have gone well into the $30s and $40s. Highly restored are twice the price or more. I am only selling as a bucket list car for me has come available and big money is needed to make that purchase. Don’t get me wrong, this one is on my “sub bucket list.” When is the last time you saw a 455 convertible 4-speed GS come along that is correct and documented and not fully restored to a 6 figure price point? Knowing they are rare and coveted, I will consider a Buy It Now if you decide this is your next car. Email me and I’ll get back to you promptly. I am an enthusiast, not a dealer, nor an expert. I have represented this car to the best of my knowledge, from reviewing all of the documents, inspecting the car, consulting Buick sources and authorities, and in talking to the prior owner. You need to ask questions and verify information. I will not be help responsible for any issues that arise from your failure to do your homework, or any errors that may arise, but I am unaware of any at the time this auction description was written. I’ve tried to cover this description with sufficient detail to document the rarity, condition, options, and supporting documentation. Please let me know if any additional questions and I will promptly respond. I could only post 24 pictures, have many more, let me know if you need any additional shots. Thanks for your interest, good luck on this rare one. Don’t let it get away! On Aug-20-11 at 15:53:36 PDT, seller added the following information: After spending a little time with the car today and taking it out for a few hot laps, here is some additional information I should have listed originally: Correct GS 455 1970 Block Casting - 455 1231738 Tried to locate the rear axle code, just don't see it on the axle housing. Posi tag there and with GS cars, the lowest numeric gear available was 3.08:1 Intake Manifold Casting - D30 M231718 E Also has the Heavy Duty Cooling package including 7 blade fanblade Confirmed the consoles were available as a pair - 4 speed console mated to the "shorty" non shift console between the bucket seats - neat, rare combo Thanks for the bidding and inquiries already, off to a great start. For those that have asked, I don't have a Buy It Now price right this minute, but I will consider such an offer from anyone out there. Offer strong and you may own this one! If not, bid to win, thanks. On Aug-24-11 at 16:48:06 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks for all of the notes and generous offers this week. Many have asked about a Buy It Now price and I now have that determined and it's been offered. Current high offer is very close to both the BIN and reserve price, starts with a 3. So, the mystery is gone, I'm not asking $4x,xxx for the car and it's very attainable for anyone that is serious or for those that have already put strong offers on the table, you are very close already, chip it up and pull the trigger. Email me with any other questions and if anyone needs to talk before committing, let me know, happy to do so. Choose Buy It Now and you own it. If not, first reasonable close offer may own the car, thanks again for the interest and looking forward to seeing this play out next few days. Lots of time remains!
