Vehicle Detail
1969 Oldsmobile 98 convertible with extrasOffered is my 1969 Oldsmobile 98 convertible, the last of the great American land yachts. Drive it today and people stare open-mouthed, especially kids. They can't believe the size of the car -- almost 19 feet long and 7 feet wide. Powered by the 455 cubic inch V-8, the hustle the car has will surprise you. Just be prepared to pay for your sins when you fill up.I bought the car from the third owner who kept it for over 18 years. It had started to slide, so I took a step by step approach to a modest restoration. The engine got a valve job and a new exhaust.Next was a new convertible top in white with a glass rear window. Then I began having carburetor problems and finally installed an Edelbrock carb that made her purr. Then lady luck paid me a visit. The rear bumper of the car bore the scars of forty years of parking lot wars. But on eBay (where else?) someone listed a new old stock bumper and I jumped on it. Two years ago, I had the car repainted to it's orignal gold color. What a difference! The pictures tell the story and that's the swollen Wabash River in the background. This old Olds runs, is in good shape, and makes a great tourer. But, in fairness, this vehicle was made forty-two years ago and a close inspection will find many weekend projects that will make her better. The fuel gauge is inoperative, probably the sending unit (I just kept track of the mileage.) The interior is shot and needs a full restoration. The trunk needs molding and carpet installed. There is an exhaust leak that is noticeable at start-up but fades away as the car warms up.These issues notwithstanding, the car runs and drives in good fashion. I believe she would cruise easily to either coast, but cannot guarantee what will happen given the age and mileage. You can assume the risk and drive her home, bring a trailer, or send a shipper. So if you want a good looking Olds that you can enjoy tomorrow, here she is. Much remains to be done, but you can enjoy the car and set your own pace. There is a very modest reserve, so make your best bid!TERMS: Please read carefully, your bid indicates you have agreed to all of the following. Of course the Olds is sold AS IS, WHERE IS with absolutely no warranty. It's parked in Terre Haute, Indiana, about fifteen minutes north of Exit 11 off Interstate 70. The buyer will have full responsibility for shipping or may elect to drive it home. Please don't ask me if I think it will make it to Frostbite Falls -- she's a good driver, but we're also talking about a forty year old car. A non-refundable deposit of $500 US must be received within 48 hours of the end of the auction. Payment in full must be received within ten calendar days after the close of the auction and the car must be removed within twenty calendar days. Bidders with less than a feedback score of ten may have their bid cancelled if they do not send me a message through eBay before bidding. Just tell me that your serious; there's a lot of nonsense going on with car auctions -- witness the number of ones relisted. Your bid indicates that you have read and accepted these terms. Go for it!
