Vehicle Detail

1949 Ford Club Coupe (2 door) 8BA Flathead 3-speed (no overdrive) Items replaced/rebuilt within the last 500 miles: -New 8-volt battery (upgraded from 6 volt…makes for easier starting/brighter lights, etc) -Generator and voltage regulator rebuilt and also upgraded to 9 volts to charge new battery properly. -2 new water pumps (belt and radiator hoses also replaced at this time) -New motor mounts -New master cylinder, all new brake hoses, all new wheel cylinders, and new brake light switch. All hard lines were also bled thoroughly until brake fluid ran through totally clean. -New fuel pump -Carb serviced Stuff you should know about the car: -This car starts right up after sitting for literally weeks at a time and runs great. This flathead is super smooth and the previous owner had the exhaust done and put dual glass packs on it, so it has that great distinctive flathead sound. -There was some restoration work done in the 1980’s. The car was painted (original color), it had some new glass installed, and the bumpers were re-chromed. I have a couple of pictures of the car before the restoration, and it really wasn’t that bad off. -There is some filler on the passenger side where the car obviously hit something. The work was done pretty well, but if you look at the pictures of the passenger side you can see a scratch/gouge in the filler about 10” long in the quarter panel just behind the door. The car doesn’t appear to have a lot of filler other than that. There is some staining on the paint just below the gas filler where gas has run down the side of the car. Overall, the paint is still in decent shape and is definitely presentable and has lots of shine to it. There are definitely dings and scratches when you get up close, but it still looks great for a car that was painted approximately 25 years ago. -As far as I can tell I am the 4th owner of the car. It went from the original owner, to her son, to a fellow who did much of the restoration work on it in the ‘80’s to the guy I bought it from. -It has very little rust and by every indication, it never has had much. The floors are very solid….not even any scaly rust or pinholes. I can see rust in three places on the car: just above the real wheel opening just under the side trim –this is the only real ‘cancerous’ rust the car has (see picture). There is also a small bit of surface rust on the leaded seam on the top of the rear quarter panel (see picture). Lastly, the battery tray is pretty rotted out and has a piece of wood on the bottom to shore it up.-The dash is very clean and the speedometer, temperature, oil pressure, battery/ammeter and fuel gauges all work. The rest of the interior could use a bit of work…the seat foam still feels solid, but the cloth is pretty deteriorated (hence the blankets). The headliner is in tact, but has some staining that may come out, but I never tried to clean it. There isn’t any carpet (never had any)…just rubber mats. It didn’t have any rear side panels or a package tray, so I made some out of Masonite and covered them with some carpet I had laying around just to make the interior complete. Oh, and the swoopy chrome trim is missing on one of the door panels (the other one is in a box of extra parts). -The odometer says 135,810 miles, but it doesn’t work, so I have no idea how many miles are actually on the car.-Interior courtesy lights (on B-pillars) don’t work. I just never got around to looking at these…they may just need new bulbs or they may need a re-wire…just wasn’t that important to me.-The clock made noise and moved periodically when I got it, but I just unplugged it because I didn’t want it drawing off the battery when it was parked for weeks at a time.-The radio made noise and worked intermittently, but again, I unplugged it because I didn’t want it drawing off the battery when it was parked for weeks at a time.-I didn’t hook up the heater hose to the water pump when I replaced it. The hose is there and just crimped off right now and the pump has a plug in place. Just never got to it. -The stainless trim is all in really good shape. -The chrome on the bumpers is all very nice. There is the very beginning of some minor pitting on the hood ornament and the trunk hinges. -All the glass is nice. There is some very minor bubbling/delaminating along the bottom of the two rear side windows and the vent windows, but aside from that no cracks, clouding or delaminating issues. -The tires are bias-ply wide white walls and they are clean and don’t have much wear (FYI: this car has 16” wheels and tires). -The hubcaps are in decent shape and have a few dings from being pounded on over the years. Repros are available and are pretty cheap if that sort of thing bothers you. -I have a pretty comprehensive file of receipts for the car…including some from the original owner as far back as 1958! I’m sure there are some ‘holes’ in the receipt history, but I certainly have receipts for the stuff that I have done to the car. Overall, this car runs great and drives as well as these cars ever did. Sure it corners like a fat lady on roller skates, but that’s part of the charm of a car that drives like it did in 1949. This would be great car for someone who wants to be able to drive it right away and sort of ‘fix as you go’. Alternatively, it would be a solid start if you’re the sort of nut looking for a solid foundation to do a 100-point restoration.
