This 1957 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster is a unique and interesting blast from the past. I have spent the last week with various experts climbing in, on, under and through this car with a camera and flashlight. The end result is an older frame off restoration (16 Years Old) of a car that has all the right stuff in all the right places. The story from the previous family is as follows:
A college student back in the early 60’s took a road trip in his ’57 Chevy to California from somewhere near Grand Island, NE and saw the little Black and Silver Vette on a corner used car lot. He traded his car in and bought the 2 door and made his way back to Nebraska and started to attend Kearney State College (now University of Nebraska at Kearney). In the photos of the top you can see the original parking pass sticker from the College dated 1964-1965. The story goes that sometime in 1965 he went into the Army and went to Vietnam, and left the car with his parents in Grand Island. Not being able to afford the car payments at the time, unknowing to the son, the parents sold the car for $600 to Moon Chevrolet in town. The Car was then bought from Moon and made its way to Nebraska City and in the mid 70’s what purchased by the family who traded it in. In that time frame the father-in-law wanted to restore the car when he bought it and took it to a shop in Nebraska City where it sat in pieces for the better part of 15 years waiting for a restore. Around 1990 the son-in-law went down to Nebraska City from Omaha to get the car and parts and get to work restoring the old relic, to surprise his father-in-law whose heath was starting to fail. He got the car back together and done just in time for the father to enjoy the car for a few months before he passed. From then until now the car when out rarely each year and was always covered and stored when not driven.
From what the experts and I have gathered it is a very complete car and appears to be a HARD TOP ONLY, "NO RADIO" car. It has the dummy radio knob. No washer, ..no courtesy lights. Engine appears original with a B277 cast date on the back and F228EF = Flint engine plant, Thursday Feb.28, 1957 engine assembly date, "EF"=, 283/220hp, 3 speed. E57S102676 vin was built around March 20, 1957. All the numbers are what they should be from the casting numbers to the date codes on them. There are pictures of most of the major parts with numbers. If anyone needs a specific picture of a number or part I would be more than happy to do so.
For those who saw the car listed last week; the car is up for sale again due to the winning bidder having heath issues. He has paid for the car and we are simply selling it on his behalf. The title remained in our name as well as possession of the car so there is no delay in the winning bidder receiving car and title. Since the pictures taken the car has gone through a complete professional detail including wet sand and buffed. Also the small 90° trim piece on the top has been ordered and installed, the rear bolts that hold the top in place, and also a protective strip that runs under the weather stripping of the top where it meets the car. Also a question a lot of people asked was about the radio currently in the car. The dash was NOT cut in anyway to make the aftermarket radio fit. Happy Bidding and Congratulations to the winning bid!
