Vehicle Detail
1970 Volkwagen Dormobile RARE and COLLECTIBLE! Here we have a very rare Dormobile. 90% original and speedometer shows 81,000 miles. She has had a "respray", finish is not shinny. There are a few dents and scratches as shown in pictures. There is evidence of a left front corner panel damage, but door closes fine. You can drive her as is and use as is as is like we did or you can chose to restore this rare historic icon. Runs great with less than 5,000 miles on the rebuilt engine but not every little thing works perfect, she is 41 years old and never been restored. Great for camping. Sleeps 2 on bottom and has 2 single person cots in the popup for the kids. Unique folding stove built into the passengers side seat. And more! She's been in Albuquerque, NM most of her life and has had a small appearance in the movie Transformers. She is one of the few remaining in the world and the last year Dormobile produced VW campers. Dormobile History Dormobile is a trade name of a UK company called Martin Walter Ltd, that manufactured and fitted camper conversions on all sorts of Vans, allowing the working man to get away on holiday cheaply. The company Martin Walter had been around for over a century building carriages for horses and then as a coach builder, and they were one of the first to cotton on to the idea that the mass market tradesmen all had their own van for work, that could be converted simply for use as a camper. The first Dormobiles were based on early Bedford vans, making the seats in the back fold down into a bed, this then evolved into fitting cabinets and kitchens, and also folding roof mechanisms. Official conversions were usually done by the factory in the UK, but the company also sold kits under license for other countries, and the VW Camper became one of the most popular models. The company was successful until the 1970's when cheaper air travel became available and holidays abroad took its core customers away from camping. One of the main visual differences that can be used to recognise a dormobile against another camper conversion is that the dormobiles featured a side hinged folding roof, whereas Westfalias and other usually used a straight up Pop-Top rather than side hinge.
