DESCRIPTION:

Our 1985 Mercedes 300SD is a recent trade-in vehicle at our dealership. The car has a high 402K miles on it, but you wouldn't know it by looking at it. Mercedes knows how to build a car! Cosmetically, the paint is not good, but looks OK from 20+ feet away. The color consistency is good, but the paint is scratched, chip, and faded all over. The body itself is solid with no visible rust. The body is pretty straight all over except for the right side which has multiple shallow dings front to rear. The bumper chrome is slightly pitted and the lower body cladding all around the car has faded dark gray paint. The alloy wheels need repainting, but the front tires are like new and the rears still have 40% to 50% tread-life remaining. The windshield has a long (12"+) crack in it on the left side. Inside, the car looks good except for the front seats, which have torn leather and faded dye. The leather on the driver's seat bottom cushion is loose and the plastic trim beside it is all broken up. The rear seat leather looks good as does the carpet, headliner, door panels, and dash. The headliner is intact, but has some stains above the driver's head. The dash looks real nice with only one small crack on top. All the electronics seem to work fine and so does the A/C system. It is cold outside here so we can't tell just how well the A/C works, but the compressor does kick in and the air temperature from the vents does get colder when the system is on. The aftermarket SONY audio system sounds good and all four speakers work.

Mechanically, the engine itself is clean and runs good. The engine mounts are bad so you can feel a pronounced vibration inside the car when the engine is idling in park. The transmission slips bad when trying to start off, but shifts good once the car is moving. It will go in reverse without slipping at all. We tried adding fluid to the transmission, but it didn't help the slipping issue. We have not done an inspection on any more mechanical aspects of this car so be aware of that. When driving the car we don't note anything glaring wrong, but we have not put the car on a lift to check it out any further than a test drive.

Electronically, all the interior power features seem to work fine and all the exterior lights work too. The car does have a current (expires 8/11) VA State Inspection, but we cannot guarantee it will pass the next inspection. We can say that it definitely won't pass in VA due to the windshield, but beyond that we can't be sure what other problems may keep it from passing, if any. The current Inspection Sticker will remain on the car for out of state buyers, but the car will be sold with a VA Rejection sticker on it for VA buyers because of the windshield crack alone. We will provide 30 Day Temporary tags if needed, but the car should not be driven long distances due to the transmission slipping.

So, in a nutshell, this Mercedes looks decent, runs good, is solid and quiet inside, has great electronics, and has a legendary diesel engine. However, it also has very high mileage and has some known mechanical issues to fix as previously described.
