THE PROJECT- I found this project last May and my brother and I have carefully worked on restoring this 1968 Camaro RS. The body was straight and in good shape, very little rust, no signs of collision damage. The interior was in good condition. Though not a frame off restoration, most everything has been replaced, repaired or repainted. I took the car down to the body and had it soda blasted down to the metal to start the rebuild. THE BODY- The floorboards were solid with minor rust spots, treated with Aspho and we fiberglass filled any pin holes. The drain plugs were replaced and sealed with undercoating. The trunk had several bad rust spots that were cut out and new metal was welded in. The rear of the car was in great shape, so very little work was needed to finish. Front fenders and the inner fender wells are brand new. The Cowl hood has a 2 ¼” rise and is also new, as are the hinges and hardware. Both the original doors are also in good condition. The Camaro has a new Gas Tank and sending unit. The fuel line is metal and the rubber hoses are new. I’ve used 3 inline filters, at the tank, before the fuel pump and before the carbuerator. The heater core is new but is not hooked up at this time. THE PAINT- I had this Camaro RS painted Dodge Viper yellow with high gloss black stripes on the front and rear. The steel wheels were painted Viper yellow to match and have the original center caps and beauty rings. I had the the Fire Wall, Sub-Frame and Inner Fender Walls painted in high gloss black. THE INTERIOR- The interior is black and is in over all good condition. I took the velvet inserts out and had the front bucket seats completely reupholstered and they look super! The original style Headliner is in good condition and looks good. The original style sun visors look new, The felts and rubbers throughout the car look good. All Glass is original and in great shape. THE BRIGHT WORK. Both front and rear bumpers are original bumpers that are in great condition, The tail light housings are in super condition. The front grill and headlights are in good condition. Notice the sliding hidden headlights. THE MOTOR- This Camaro has a late model (1978-79) 350 ci Chevy V8. It was striped down to a short block and the heads were redone at a local machine shop. New Timing Chain, timing chain cover and oil pan. Motor is strong and runs great. Hooker Headers, aftermarket Intake and a rebuilt Holley 650 carb complete the kit. THE TRANS - The transmission is a Muncie M-20 4-Speed that has been gone through and shifts fine. The Rear end is a 10 bolt posio with no problems. This is a nice tight rear end that dose not clunk or howl or leak. THE BRAKES- are original style drum brakes, front and rear. Drums were turned and new brake pads and rebuild kit were installed all the way around. Car stops fine. THE OVER ALL- This Camaro is fun to drive , runs strong and turns heads everywhere I go.
