Vehicle Detail
For sale is a wide-body 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster replica built on a rare 1983 911SC Cabriolet (not a chopped targa, but a proper factory convertible). Porsche only imported 800 factory Speedsters into North America in '89 and they are highly collectible, still selling for $60-80K or more. This is the perfect opportunity to get the look and feel of a factory Speedster at an affordable price that you can drive on the street without worrying about damaging your investment! The conversion seems to have been done at some point in the 1990's in California, and included: welded-on steel front and rear 930 Turbo fender flairs, not fiberglass chopped Speedster windshield full width side door windows with manual winders (just like the factory cars) manual folding chopped Speedster soft top / roof fiberglass clamshell that covers folded roof and rear seat area Speedster specific front valance with flush mounted fog lights rear seat delete luggage tray with dual opening glovebox doors Deep-dish 17" CMW 3-peice rims made out of factory forged 16" Fuchs centers with bolt on outer halves. I'm not sure of the exact wheel widths, but I can try to find out if anyone wants. The car came with huge 315 wide rear tires! Originaly 3.0l engine was upgraded with oil-fed Carrera timing chain tensioners. 3.0L 911SC engine are VERY reliable. I had one go 300k km without problems. Removal of the original windsheild and the attached VIN plate required the attachment of a California State replacement VIN plate on the door sill (same #) Remote vehicle security system installed at some point. I purchased this car in the fall of 2009 out of Minnesota, and imported it into Canada. They provided a clean AutoCheck report at the time, showing only "slight damage" from a minor rear impact in 2005. My mechanic couldn't find any evidence of damage on the car. The car is currently registered in Ontario with a clean title. Ideal for a local sale within Canada or easy to return to the USA. Last summer I had the car completely inspected and corrected any mechanical and safety issues, including: Brand new Yokohama S-Drive ultra high performance summer tires (less than 25 miles use since installation). 235/45R17 front, 275/40R17 rear. Engine oil return tubes all replaced with genuine Porsche expanding replacements to stop oil leaks Oil return line to oil tank replaced Oil tank removed, cleaned, rebraised, and pressure tested to cure oil leak at inlet fitting Wheel bearings adjusted Inner and outer CV joint boots replaced on one side. Only one needed replacement due to road damage, but replaced both. Safety certificate issued for on-road registration. Hasn't been plated as I haven't actually driven it yet! Full RS interior installed including custom light weight Purlon black carpet set and new RS America style door panels. Rear luggage shelf recovered in same carpet, including front between doors. Factory used vinyl here, but Perlon looks better. Door speakers removed for track-style look, but easy to reinstall an audio system New Interstate battery The engine starts quickly and runs strong. I don't think I had an allignment done at the time, so that should probably be done, and I don't think we checked the AC system. Anyone who is seriously interested in the car can be put in touch with the shop that performed the work on the car for more info and verification. They are a well respected local Porsche specialist. The following items on the car still need to be addressed to make it a perfect car. The back window on the soft top is hazzed / spotted and should be replaced if you intend to drive the car with the top up. I keep the car in the garage at all times and didn't plan to ever drive it with the top up, so I didn't replace it. There is also a couple of tears or cuts in the top on the passenger side by the window that the previous owner had mended from the inside. I'm not sure if this damage was from someone trying to break in or from the top being impropperly folded. You can buy a replacement canvas top for an '89 Speedster on-line for under $1000, or you could just have a repair shop replace the back plastic window for considerably less. The front hood needs to be sanded down and repainted as there is some bubbling, probably from a cheap repaint to cover stone chips. The paint of the drivers side rear fender is chipping off right at the lip, and the passenger side rear fender lip has a slight dent and is also pulled down slightly in a couple places from the huge 315 tires the previous owner installed. There is also a small scuff on the passenger side rear flair. If you look very closely at the reflections in the paint you can see the seam where the fender flairs are welded on. I was undecided if I wanted to keep the car black, or repaint the entire car. I can have the hood repainted and the rear fender flairs touched up for about $1000. The leather seats are starting to show their age and have some surface cracks. They are the original SC seats which have slightly different stitching in the headrest area vs a Carrera seat. The seats could probably just do with conditioning and some black leather dye, or very easily replace with newer 911 seats (4 bolts each, and they just drop in). They swapped the passenger and driver sides when they did the carpet to even out any future wear. I can swap them back if the buyer wants, but they are identical. The shifter knob is loose and needs a new crush sleve or some epoxy. The shifter bushing feel like they are a bit worn as well, and I would install a short throw kit with some new bushings and a leather knob and shift boot. That's just my personal preference, its totally driveable as it is. The odometer seems to not be running. The milage showing is 76k miles, which is about 100k km, and seems inline with the milage reports from AutoCheck. I don't know if its just disconnected or needs repair. The spedometer is working fine. Overall this is a great car at an amazing price. Just to buy the conversion parts to build a car like this will cost you at least $20k, plus you need a good 911 to install on and all the labour. It would easily cost $40-50k to replicate this car. I always wanted a Speedster and couldn't resist buying it, but I picked up a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder last summer, and really don't need two 2-seater convertibles. I could honestly part this car out for more than the reserve price but it would be such a shame, I'd rather it goes to a good home and be enjoyed. $2000 deposit required within 72 hours of the close of the auction by PayPal.
