DESCRIPTION:

Its not often you see a classic car like this one unless your viewing concours restorations at a car show. This daily driver 1984 Mercedes 280SL is in excellent condition in just about every way. It isn't restored, but still looks, runs and drives great! The paint, body and interior are in beautiful condition with only very minor flaws that most people wouldn't even notice. The bright silver paint gleems in the sun and the bright chrome is in excellent condition for it's age with hardly any pitting at all. The paint itself isn't original, but was repainted several years ago due to the original paint fading. Even years later, it hardly has any flaws in the paint now. The painted area under the rear bumper is a little darker than the rest of the paint due to road debris hitting it for years. There is a tiny touched-up paint nick on the top edge of the trunk lid and some minor road tar on the bottom part of the sides of the car. The original matching painted hubcaps look almost new except for a couple minor scrapes on the outer edge of the right front cap. The hardtop looks very nice inside and out, but there is a tiny paint chip and some light scratches on the right side on top. The soft top looks equally well, but is creased a little and the plastic windows are a little frosted from being stored in the tray for many years. It appears this car has been used primarily with either the top down or the hardtop in place most of the time. The hardtop's headliner looks beautiful. The interior of the car has a tasteful two-tone black vinyl with black/gray/white checkered cloth inserts on the seats and door panels. The rich wood trim looks very nice for its age with only some minor scratches in the clear coat around the automatic transmission shifter. The dash is in excellent condition with no cracks at all. The instrument cluster and center console all look very nice and everything works as it should including the ice cold A/C! The aftermarket JVC audio system sounds very nice pumping sounds through aftermarket front speakers in the dash and 6X9 rear speakers mounted on the rear deck. There is even a 12-Disc JVC CD changer in the trunk. The chrome pieces covering the seat hinges have some very minor pitting, but its not noticeable. The driver's seat has a few tiny picks in the vinyl on the side of the backrest, but they are hardly noticeable. One last interior flaw is some minor scratches on the chrome door sills on each side. Other than those minor, and hardly noticeable flawed items, this car's interior is absolutely beautiful!

The only things left to discuss is the mechanicals of this classic Benz. No expense has been spared in keeping this 280SL in tip-top mechanical condition. We have service records from the current owner dating back to 2005. The engine runs great and the car drives down the road with a smooth feel, and has solid, but non-jarring shifts and a peppy acceleration. The mechanical issues with this car are all minor and easily repaired. As I said before, the engine runs great, but there is a slight hesitation upon cold starts. However, the hesitation quickly disappears with a couple revs and a few seconds of driving. The car exhibits a slight pull to the right when driving and there is a slight vibration at around 60MPH. These items are probably due to the car needing an alignment and wheel balancing. The engine has a slight oil leak at the rear and the rear differential has some normal fluid seepage, but its not dripping. The middle silencer and rear muffler in the exhaust system are rusting out, but there are no holes in either at this time. The front brake pads have about 20% useful life remaining, but the rear pads are at 70%. The rotors are in very good condition and the oil/filter was recently changed and isn't due to be changed again for another 5,000 miles. Other than the listed minor mechanical issues this car is road ready with no excuses and no apologies. You will be hard pressed to find a finer example of a 1984 Mercedes convertible anywhere.
