Vehicle Detail

Maserati Bi-Turbo Classic (1985) Restoration Project This is a 1985 Maserati Bi-Turbo that I am selling for one of my very good friends. The car's engine after a little tweaking, will be in good working condition. This car has excellent bones (twin turbos, etc.) and would make a solid restoration project for someone interested. I don’t want to give anyone the mis-impression that this car is inoperable --- as it runs just fine --- however it has been stored for a majority of its 26 years (with its engine having been started on a regular basis). This car was repainted in the early 1990's and has only 34,790 miles on its odometer; and these are the original miles on the car. My friend has owned this car personally since 1990 and has kept the vehicle garaged almost the entire time. Recently he owned 4 different vehicles and this one never was driven much, except occasionally around his local neighborhood. He has relocated several times over the years (as a former banker) and each time his employer shipped his car inside of a large moving truck to protect it. For the most part this vehicle has been babied, however, the leather interior has become split and cracked over the years in certain places and needs to be restored (this is very typical of older Bi-Turbo models). The owner would not recommend this vehicle for anyone under the age of 21 or as a vehicle for day-to-day transportation purposes because this car has a lot of power (190 horsepower with twin turbo’s) and is not as dependable as your typical Japanese commuting vehicle. This car was extremely unique in its day and only 4,000 of these were produced annually worldwide. The owner does not want to see anyone get hurt or purchase this car just to race around in. This car would make a nice weekend sports car to enjoy (as a second car). The retail price for this car back in the 1980's ranged between $25,000 - $30,000 new (which was a lot of money back then) depending upon the features that were added. Many of these vehicles have not survived until today because of the tendency of their owners to wrap them around trees (unfortunately), especially in Europe where there are less restrictions on highway speeds. Things that would need to be addressed: besides a complete tune-up and the leather restoration to the interior that I previously noted, the four Pirelli tires also need to be replaced in my opinion. (Two of the tires have a slow leak). There are some age related cracks appearing on these existing tires also. The cooling fans for the vehicle have stopped engaging recently. When the car gets hot they typically kick on, and sometimes they will remain on even when the car ignition has been turned off as a safety precaution for cooling the engine. The owner assumed that the temperature switch had just stopped working correctly and recently replaced that item (a $15 part), however, it did not correct the problem. The car starts up and drives just fine, however, after 5 or 10 minutes when the car begins to heat up the fans do not kick on like they are supposed to --- so the owner has been shutting the car off so as not to overheat the car. The owner does not wish to go to the trouble of having a mechanic diagnose the problem and fix it, however, he will attest that they were working just fine before. In fact, the owner's next door neighbor has a father who used to be a mechanic (retired) who looked at the vehicle and said when he used to work on cars he could hit the temperature switch with the end of a Coke bottle and the fans would oftentimes kick on. He used a drinking glass as a demonstration with the owner's Maserati and the fans did suddenly kick on. However, the owner has not been able to replicate this on his own without his next door neighbor's father's assistance. So hopefully it is just an electrical connection issue of some sort. There is also no stereo receiver currently installed in the vehicle; just a stereo cover plate (eventhough the speakers do work just fine). The stereo was removed as a theft deterrent measure nearly 20 years ago when this car had been moved to California on a moving truck. Two of the Maserati monikers/symbols have been stolen from the body of the vehicle over the years, one time believe it or not it occurred while it was at a Maserati dealership (one of the missing pieces is where a trunk latch would normally be located – and the other behind the driver's passenger window. The matching Maserati cover plate behind the passenger’s side window, however, which hides the gas tank lid was never touched and is in its proper place.) Also, the passenger’s outside door handle needs to be repaired (it is not working properly) and its respective door hinge will also need to be examined/repaired. The passenger door does lock properly and can be opened from the inside only at this point. The driver's side door funtctions properly, however, it cannot be locked presently at all (therefore it is always parked in the owner's 4-car garage). Another quirky issue worth pointing out: the owner put the driver-side window down recently (an electric window) when he was cleaning the car in his garage and it is now sitting in the rolled down position and it will not go back up. (A mechanic suggested that he take the door cover off and push the window back up in place. He also mentioned that sometimes on older Maserati’s if you lower the windows too far into the down position, sometimes they can get stuck? The owner is not very mechanically inclined and is reluctant to attempt this.) The turbos, however, on this vehicle are in very good shape (both of them) -- mechanics have told him this over the years. This car is also presently unregistered and uninspected, however, it is (as mentioned) operational and has a clean Massachusetts’ title dating back to 1990 when he purchased the vehicle. I/He will be glad to answer any other questions you may have regarding this vehicle. Good luck in your search and thank you for your interest. Please note: This car is being sold “as-is” without any expressed or implied warranties and the Buyer will be responsible for all shipping, taxes, title, registration, and license fees & any transfer expenses (including all export & custom fees if they apply) associated with this sale. The only payments that are acceptable for this transaction are cash and a Certified Bank check. A $500 deposit must be paid within 48 hours (PayPal is acceptable for the deposit) and the remaining balance within 5 days of the completed auction. Pick-up (as it cannot be driven until fan issue is addressed) or delivery of the vehicle will need to take place no later than 5 days following the completion of this auction. ****Seller Added Note: There is an incident report listed for this car from 1997 that needs to be explained. Seller used to live in Hingham, Massachusetts right across the street from the Fire Department. At one point the owner was running the car and the engine appeared to be overheating on a dirt portion of his driveway (where a pile of leaves underneath the car began smoldering). Someone crossed the street to ask one of the firemen sitting outside if he could borrow a fire extinguisher, however, the fireman chose to respond with his truck instead. He doused the leaves underneath the car with a fire extinguisher in a matter of seconds, and must have drafted an incident report from this event. There was absolutely no damage to the car whatsoever, and therefore the owner's insurance company was never even notified. The existence of this report came as a total surprise to the owner through this Ebay listing, as it seemed so inconsequential at the time.
