Vehicle Detail

1953 Rolls Royce Alloy Bodied Silver Dawn Drophead Coupe This is a 1953 H.J. Mulliner, hand crafted alloy-bodied, Silver Dawn Drophead Coupe (Serial No. LSLE33) is a one of a kind with left hand drive. It was specially ordered and owned by Texaco attorney Howard Kizer. The Kizer family, along with Carl Fisher, financed the Indianapolis Raceway. ?In 1953 the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn was advertised as an owner rather than chauffeur driven car. Most were produced with factory-assembled steel bodies and almost all were exported to North America. There were a few sedans equipped with Farina and Freestone bodies .Park Ward bodied a limited number of coupes and mundane convertibles. This is the only one highly styled hand crafted one produced by Muliner with left hand drive. One right hand drive one was also produced.??The car is powered by a 4.6 liter, in-line 6-cylinder, developing?150-horsepower, coupled to an automatic 4-speed transmission, with a?120-inch wheelbase. It weighs about 4,100 pounds with power front hydraulic and rear mechanical brakes and is capable of speed of about 87 miles per hour.??A 4000 plus hour restoration project preserved this Alloy bodied, hand crafted one-and-only example of a H.J. Mulliner, 1953 Rolls-Royce, Silver Dawn Drophead coupe. The photo slides will show the condition of the undercarriage/chassis and engine compartment with 55 years of road dirt accumulated. The tear down, disassembly of parts, lines, wiring and the subsequent 3 months of labor with a crew working six days a week to restore, replate, rewire, prime, spray with rust inhibitors, fill and urethane finish on the chassis alone. The total restoration was over 4000 hours which have successfully brought this rare vehicle to the highest show standards. The total restoration could not be duplicated today for under $ 450,000 alone and would require three years to do. It was actually driven to and from the Greenwich Rolls Royce National Meet on the major interstates traveling 250 miles at highway speeds while listening to its correct original radio. Upon arrving at Greenwich it was just highly photographed and transported the owner to an elegant Five Star restaurant. The following day after a quick detail it won its division at Greenwich and returned home with yet an additional award.
