DESCRIPTION:

The BMW 528i is a legendary automobile with rave reviews over the years. BMW's 2.8L, inline 6-cylinder is a great engine with lots of torque that is a blast to drive. The BMW 5-series is the perfect mix of luxury sport sedan and luxury sports car. This mid-size sedan handles and accelerates like a vehicle half it's size. The car looks good inside and out, but does need some work cosmetically and mechanically.

Inside, the leather seats have no rips or tears or even worn spots, but the tan dye color is thin in spots and the driver's seat needs to be re-dyed to look great (mainly the driver's lower cushion). All the electronics seem to work inside and the dash, headliner, and door panels all look very nice. The painted trim behind the door panel pull handles is scratched and cracking, but that is an easy spray paint fix. The dash looks great, but the wood trim has some cracks in the clear coat in a few spots. The cup holders won't pop-out and the installed aftermarket cupholder beside the shifter is broken. The audio system sounds great, but the display is bad with some pixels not displaying. The sunroof works great and the power seats and dual-zone climate control work great too. We aren't sure about the A/C system because it is too cold here to tell if it is blowing cold, but the compressor does kick in and the heat works great. The carpet isn't ripped or worn, but it does have some spill stains that can easily be cleaned. The door sills are scuffed, but that is normal. Overall, the interior looks very nice.

Outside, our BMW 528i has a beautiful color gold paint job, which isn't the original paint, but looks good from 20+ feet away. Any closer and you begin to see some paint issues, which are mainly on the roof, trunk lid, and rear bumper. The rest of the paint looks pretty good all over. The front bumper has a scrape on the lower left corner, the hood looks great, but the hood's BMW emblem is bad, the left front door handle has paint fade, the left rear door has a small scrape in the middle, the left 1/4 panel has some scratches on top, the trunk is badly scratched and scraped, the rear bumper has bad paint on the top edge, the right 1/4 panel has clear coat deterioration (stress lines), the right rear door has clear coat stress lines, the right front door has a long, but light scratch, the mirrors have paint fade on top, the roof has bad paint scrapes and scratches, the trim around the windshield is missing and/or cracking, and the headlights need to be polished because they are badly frosted. I list all these items to show that, for the most part, the exterior looks good with only a few bad areas. Most of the aformentioned items can be seen in the pics below. The only really bad paint issues are on the roof and trunk lid. The rest of the paint issues are minor, but we like to be open and honest about our auction vehicles. The alloy wheels look nice and the tires are like new all around.

Mechanically, our BMW 528i runs and drives great! The engine starts right up and has a smooth idle with excellent acceleration. The pics below show the engine is dirty because we didn't want to hide anything by cleaning it up. It runs great, but does have a slight oil leak in the valve cover. You can smell some oil burning after driving the car for a while. Other than the oil leak, the engine itself is fine. It just needs a good detailing. The serpentine belt is worn and won't pass our VA State Inspection, the upper radiator hose is cracking and needs to be replaced, the radiator has a slight leak, the hose on the scondary valve needs to be replaced, the headlights need to be polished and won't pass VA State Inspection, the right fog light is cracked and won't pass VA State Inspection, the ASC (traction control) motor cable is bad and needs to be replaced, both rear door window regulators need to be replaced (the windows won't go up or down), the right rear window switch is missing, and lastly, the steering rack and inner tie rods need to be replaced. The last item is also a VA State Inspection issue that will keep it from passing. The car drives great and you won't notice anything wrong when driving the car, but our VA State Inspection looks at the steering rack and tie rods and will fail them because they are worn and leaking. Your state may not have annual inspections in which case you could buy this car and drive it for a long time before needing to replace the inspection items that cause the car to fail in Virginia.

Well, thats the good and not so good about our 1998 BMW 528i. A good shadetree mechanic could fix all the affected items and this car will pass any State's Inspection with flying colors. If you are fortunate enough to live in a State that doesn't require Inspections, then the listed problems won't be an issue right away and the car can be driven as it is. We will be selling this car with a current Va State Inspection sticker (expires 6/11) for out of state buyers, but if you live in Virginia, the car will be sold with a "Rejection" sticker.
