Vehicle Detail
I am selling my Volvo S40 after nearly eight years of ownership. I am the second owner and purchased the vehicle from a dealer who acquired it coming off its lease. This has been my regular commuting car. For the past year it was driven 16 miles/day on back roads. I will be moving and will not need a car for commuting to work. There are some areas that could be addressed with this vehicle. I will do my best to describe the good and the bad. The car will be sold "as is" and is a no reserve auction. 24 hour after the completion of the auction the winning bidder must submit a $100 down payment via PayPal and must make full payment within 5 days of the end of the auction. You can pay via PayPal, Cash, or Money Order. If you have zero feedback please send me an email before bidding or else I will cancel any bids with zero feedback. The car is available for local pickup. If you are not from the area you will need to make your own arrangement for delivery. I will be moving on March 1st which means the car must be picked up by that date. I cannot provide temp plates. The car currently lives in North Arlington, VA but normally lives and is registered in MI. The Michigan title is clean and free of liens and on hand with me in VA. If you would like to see the car send me an email and I'll tell you where it is parked. You are also more than welcome to test drive the vehicle M-Th after 5:30pm or Fri-Sun anytime. Please email and we can set up a time. Exterior - The condition of the paint is average at best. This car has not been garage kept in the eight years I have owned it and has been exposed to the elements. The hood has many areas where you can see some force of nature (birds/berries/other) have caused for some stains in the pant. I have tried my best to remove the stains but they seem to have had some longer lasting damage to the effected area. I was sideswiped by a U-Haul truck a number of years ago and you can see the residual effect of that encounter on the rear tail light. This caused some deep scratches which have begun to show some rust. Outside of that area, the car is rust free. The front tail light has a few cracks though this doesn't impact the functionality of the headlights. I had to gorilla glue a few areas of the front grill which the picture shows. Also, you will notice a metal string sticking out from the grill. The interior hood latch lever broke a number of years ago and as a quick fix I've been popping the hood by pulling on these remnants of the hood release. A mechanic quoted me $125 to fix but it works just fine as it so I never bothered. The side of the car has the usual dents and scrapes from those who aren't careful in parking lots. The rear bumper has very minor scrapes given the cars age. While I've pointed out all the bad this car is still a nice looking vehicle and one that I am proud to drive on a daily basis. Wheels/Rims - As you can see the rims are in nice shape. No major issues. I hit a massive pothole last winter which caused a blowout and a bent rim. I replaced the rim with another S40 rim from a used parts place and purchased a new tire. As a result, three tires are matching and one is not. The other three tires have some life left in them and the new tire only has about 12K miles on it. I think that pothole incident had some impact to the car's ball bearings but I am not sure. You can feel and hear some bumpiness in the tire and it's not the rim or tire. In my opinion this is the only immediate fix which needs to be done to the car if you are traveling long distances or fast (over 65MPH). I have not had it checked out so I'm not sure of the diagnosis or the cost. I had new front and rear rotors and brake pads installed at 118,700 miles along with a brake system flush so you should have lots of miles left on the breaking system. Car stops on a dime without any noises. Guts - The car starts up easily and runs well. The car does not blow smoke, burn oil, or make any loud noises. There are no leaks whatsoever. I replaced a good portion of the exhaust at 108k miles and also had a new alternator installed during the same service. The service engine light is on as I have not had any Volvo dealers service the vehicle in some time and reset the service engine light. The check engine light is also on due to an oxygen sensor which is not functioning. This has been the case for the last four years. I took the car to the dealership when the light when on, they told me it was the Oxygen sensor and that the car had two so it was not an issue which would cause any damage. As a result I have been driving with one oxygen sensor for the last four years with no issues. The engine runs well with the exception of the turbo. When you really push down on the gas the car seems to miss a few times before accelerating. Its not an issue for me and doesn't prevent me from picking up speed just an annoyance. I'm guessing it's the turbo but it could be a spark plug as well. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get a tune-up. I have most of the service records that I can supply to the purchaser. I get regular oil changes so the engine should have a lot more life in it. Oil change records included (I'm only listing those I can prove but I know more existed) - Oil change at: 63,128 69,104 72,633 81,577 87,520 101,312 107,422 118,700 124,485 129,999. Interior - The inside of the car is in really good shape given the age and mileage. The leather has normal wear. The driver seat, which has the most wear, has no tears and the seats are very comfortable. I did have a child seat installed in the back so you can see a few marking from that. All the electronics work perfectly. CD player works great. The sunroof works perfectly and has no leaks. All the power windows and seats work flawlessly. The air blows cold, the seats heat up, and the heat works great. As I'm trying to point out all the flaws with the car the interior really has none. The original floor mats are included and have normal wear. The car has been in no major accidents. It was broken into and the window repaired as a result. It was also nicked by a U-Haul as explained above Hopefully the pictures and explanations above will help you decide your level of interest and a fair price. Please email any questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
