BY DAVE VANDERWERP The BMW 3-series is without question one of our favorite cars, reigning on our yearly 10Best Cars list for the past 16 years. The current and much-praised, fifth-generation E90 version is no doubt the best, and is among the most rewarding cars to drive at any price. For 2008, and to no one's surprise, BMW is adding a convertible version, just as the company has for the past 20 years. But, this is BMW's first foray into the expanding, hardtop-convertible parade. Other notable features are a much-improved, rapid-shifting six-speed automatic; special reflective leather to keep the seats cool (up to 30 degrees cooler than conventional leather) when the top is down; and, of course, the spectacular 300-hp twin-turbo inline-six that was introduced in last year's 335i coupe. In the U.S., the convertible will be offered as the aforementioned 300-hp 335i—the model we got an early drive in—as well as a 230-hp 328i when it goes on-sale at the end of March. Pricing isn't yet finalized, but the convertible premium will likely not change much from the outgoing model's, so expect to pay about $7000 more than comparable coupes; roughly $43,000 for the 328i and $48,000 for the 335i. Changes from convertible to coupe in 23 seconds Hardtop convertibles offer numerous advantages over their soft-top competitors, including coupe-like quietness and excellent visibility when the top is up. BMW reports that the rear side windows have grown 30 percent in the new 3-series convertible, while overall visibility is up 38 percent. To our eyes, visibility out of the convertible is essentially equivalent to that of the coupe. Looks-wise, you probably won't spot the new convertible by its 3-series-coupe-like front-end, but rather from the rear, where the coupe's flowing roofline is replaced by a distinct line where the convertible's roof meets the trunk. BMW's new top is a three-piece unit and, at the push of a center-console button or the key fob, stacks the front panel on top of the center panel, then the rear panel on top of both of those before disappearing into the trunk in 22 seconds. It takes a second longer to reverse the process, which is about seven seconds quicker than its closest competitor, the Volvo C70. The downside of folding hardtops is that they're heavy and that the top can hog most of the trunk space when down. In the 3-series' case, the top itself adds 300 pounds, while the extra chassis reinforcements pack on another 150, so expect a 335i convertible to weigh about 4000 pounds. To BMW's credit, however, the convertible retains a 50-50 weight distribution and is claimed to have 50-percent stiffer torsional rigidity than the previous 3-series convertible. From the driver's seat, we can tell you that the new 3-series is among the stiffest in its class, with almost no perceptible quivers felt through either the seat or steering wheel. The convertible's 12-cubic-foot trunk is actually one cube larger than the coupe's, but shrinks to 7 with the top down; still leaving usable space beneath the panels. That also compares favorably with the Volvo C70's 13 cubic feet top-up and 6 top-down. However, the Volvo has a nifty loading feature that electronically motors the roof panels out of the way for easier access to the trunk space with the top down. On the BMW, that feature is optional (part of the $500 Comfort Access, which also includes keyless unlocking/locking and starting) and doesn't work as well as there's no button (instead you must click the key fob twice), and even then doesn't make loading as easy as the Volvo does. However, the 3-series has a folding rear seat and a 16-inch-wide trunk pass through to accommodate the must-have set of golf clubs under the folded But how does it drive? Has chopping the roof and adding weight spoiled the 3-series? Most definitely not. If anything, it's just a touch less-edgy than the stiffer and lighter 335i coupe and sedan, but the convertible still dances up a twisty mountain road in a way that will satisfy the enthusiast. The surprisingly linear, 300-hp 3.0-liter direct-injection twin-turbo six barks with a satisfactory, very un-turbo-like snarl and is the least compromised turbo engine we've ever driven. Naturally it doesn't feel quite as strong as in the coupe; BMW predicts the convertible's 0-to-60-mph times will be 0.2-second slower than comparable coupe's. We blasted to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds in a 335i manual coupe, so that would put a manual 335i convertible at 4.9 seconds, and an automatic at 5.0. Still not exactly what you'd call slow. While enthusiasts will probably prefer the standard six-speed manual transmission, opt for the new ZF six-speed automatic and the engine's boosted nature is concealed even more, to a point that it's basically indiscernible. BMW claims this new transmission shifts up to 40-percent quicker than other automatics, and even though it's a conventional automatic with a torque converter its shift times are approaching those of automated manuals, such as BMW's SMG. To us, this new automatic is up there with the Jaguar XK's tranny as among the best; both of which are far better than the clunky SMG. And who wouldn't want satisfying, right-now shifts without the bumbling between gears that happens with SMG? Wide-open-throttle upshifts happen with a reassuring kick approaching that of automated manuals. As far as the 3-series' convertibleness is concerned, we did over a hundred miles with the top down, optional wind blocker in place, and windows up. If there's any degradation to structural rigidity with the top down, it's minimal, and even at 80 to 85 mph the cabin is reasonably quiet. Perhaps better, we were able to stay warm with outside temperatures in the low- to mid-40s. Other 3-series traits remain: Terrifically comfortable seats, with optional power bolster adjustment (you must try these); properly weighted and responsive steering that's among the best; and a ride-handling balance its competitors would kill for. The 3-series sedan, coupe, and now, convertible. You really can't go wrong no matter which one you choose. We'll take a convertible all day long even at $8,500 more. BMW won two other category awards for its 2.5-liter inline six and 5-liter V10, in addition to having the twin turbo named Best New Engine. The 62 automotive journalists from 30 countries who served as judges also named Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter turbocharged and supercharged TSI unit (earlier post) as best in the 1-liter to 1.4-liter class, with its larger sibling, the 2-liter turbo developed by Audi and applied in the Golf GTi and Audi A3, topping the 1.8-liter to 2-liter category.--> Toyota meanwhile saw its 1.5-liter hybrid that powers the Prius named Best Fuel Economy engine and its 1-liter 3-cylinder from the Aygo and Yaris take the honors in the Sub 1-liter category. (Earlier post.) ---------------------- BMW 3.0-Liter Twin-Turbo 6 Named Engine of the Year By Jonny Lieberman on May 7, 2008 File this one under "News that will not shock Justin Berkowitz." For the fourth straight year in a row, the propeller people from Bavaria have taken home Engine of the Year honors as decided by… motoring journalists. Who decides on which motor journalists get to vote? Who knows? Anyhow, this is the second year in a row that the 335i's dark bread und white sausage has taken home the award. And why the hell not? BMW has simply eliminated turbo lag, a trick they couldn't even manage in their own twin-turbo V8. And the power is awesome. I once asked a BMW engineer about the possibility that they underrated 3.0-liter twin-turbo's power to save the face of the then out-going E46 M3. He was aghast. Nein! That would be unethical, immoral and many other non-nice things. Who would do such a thing? I explained the history of American muscle cars, the notorious underrating of horsepower and my German friend looked nauseous. Either he's a hell of an actor, or completely in the dark. I saw a 335i dyno 285 horsepower at the wheel. Figure a 15 – 20 percent driveline loss and you're talking at least 340 horses, maybe more. But hey, who's complaining? ----------------------------------------- ZF SHIFTS SMOOTHLY INTO SECOND-GENERATION BMW SIX-SPEED Even as it introduces the concept of an eight-speed automatic transmission that it will put into production in two years, ZF has made it clear that its strategy is not about the number of gears, but what those gears can do. Since introducing the 6 HP 26 six-speed automatic transmission for passenger cars and light trucks in 2001, ZF has made what it calls “significant advancements” in the recent technical upgrade of the transmission in the form of the new 6 HP 28. Even as it introduces the concept of an eight-speed automatic transmission that it will put into production in two years, ZF has made it clear that its strategy is not about the number of gears, but what those gears can do. Since introducing the 6 HP 26 six-speed automatic transmission for passenger cars and light trucks in 2001, ZF has made what it calls “significant advancements” in the recent technical upgrade of the transmission in the form of the new 6 HP 28.BMW. At about 95 kg (210 lb) and 700 N·m (520 lb·ft), the second-generation 6 HP 28 was engineered for multiple downshifts without interruption. While the geartrain itself is fundamentally the same, the use of a new vibration- reducing torque converter, in combination with optimized software control and hydraulics, has resulted in reduced shift times by 70%, says ZF. A 5% fuel economy improvement is expected with gasoline engines via a turbine torsional vibration damper, with 6% improvement for diesel engine applications via a twintorsional damper (Twin TD). A diesel’s harsher NVH characteristic was the impetus behind the choice of different dampers for the gasoline and diesel engines. The new torque converter improves the connection between the driveline and the engine, allowing the driver to feel a more active and direct vehicle response when accelerating; the objective is to close the clutch completely as soon as possible. Downshifts are performed in up to four stages without any time losses or noticeable deceleration. The hydraulic system enables the clutch to be directly controlled by a separate pressure regulator so that no additional time is required for jumping a drive stage. To find the target gear, control electronics determine the optimum gear based on load conditions, driving situation, and vehicle speed. If a driver is cruising in sixth gear and wants to rapidly accelerate, the transmission needs just 100 ms to trigger the change from sixth to second gear. The response time for downshifts is approximately 120 ms, below the limit of human perception The new BMW 6 HP 28 uses the Lepelletier gear set, which allows for six ratios with fewer components than previous fivespeed transmissions, and thus a lessweighty gear set. The system uses a planetary gear set as well as a Ravigneaux gear set with five shift elements. A plastic oilpan also contributes to weight reduction Manufactured in Saarbrücken, Germany, the new transmission is currently available in the BMW 3 Series Coupe, X3, and X5. It is designed for high-torque engines, including 12-cylinder applications. Term Section Location Definition Lemon Buyback Title and ProblemCheck If after a reasonable amount of attempts the authorized dealer is unable to conform a new vehicle to any of its applicable express warranties, the manufacturer shall either provide its customer with a new vehicle of a like model line, if available, or otherwise comparable vehicle as a replacement, or accept the return of the vehicle from its customer and refund to its customer the purchase price paid for the vehicle less a reasonable allowance for use of the vehicle. Lemon/Buyback laws vary in the states that have enacted them. Buyback laws may not exist in most states. --------------------------------!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Under the bizzare laws of California a owner can force the manufaurer to repurchase a car for an alleged complaint as minor as the check engine light coming on (in this car.) He had not tightened the gas cap all the way down. This car was returned to BMW for a non-conformity with the warranty (check engine light). BMW graciously repurchased the car from the owner and securely fastened the gas cap. BMW will very commonly repurchase cars to ensure 100% customer satisfaction. Most importantly, the FULL factory warranty remains on this until 01/11/2012, or 50k miles. Bizzare law , but that's California, drowning in debt from ludicrous laws like this. This is not a salvage/totaled/flood/theft recovery title. Those titles the brand is permanent in every state and the warranty is voided completely on the car. A California buyback with full warranty in place is used only in CA. In all but Florida(as they have a similar law)the titles have no such branding as they are not CA. This is a consumer law to foster goodwill in CA. Where else does a car get repurchased because a ck engine light came on .. Ludicrous. That is just a warranty item in all other states. As many as 20% of lease Benz's and BMW's in CA are reacquired usually just because the lessee wants out of the lease. Squeaky brakes are another common excuse. I bought a M6 last year because the owner alleged 3 times his cigarette lighter wasn't hot enough for a quick smoke. No small wonder the state has businesses' flying out and a 25 billion dollar deficit. I PULLED THE SERVICE HISTORY ON THIS CAR AND IT IS FLAWLESS INCLUDING NEW BRAKES. THE 1ST TIME THE CK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE GAS CAP WAS LOSE AND THAT WAS THOUGHT TO BE THE PROBLEM. THE 2ND TIME IT CAME ON IT PROVED TO BE THE HIGH PRESSURE PUMP FOR THE DIRECT FUEL INJECTION. THE TIME BETWEEN THESE 2 COMPLAINTS EXCEEDED 30 DAYS AND THEREFORE THE OWNER HAD THE RIGHT UNDER CA LAW TO GET OUT OF HIS LEASE. THAT'S IT.BMWNA COMPLETLY INSPECTS THE CAR AND "ALL" NON CONFORMITES ARE REPAIRED.NO OTHER ISSUES. THE CAR UNDER THE CA LAW HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY INSPECTED AND ALL RECALLS ARE TO DATE, FULL WARRANTY REMAINS TILL WELL INTO 2012, EXCEPT FOR THE PUMP WHICH GETS ONE MORE YEAR. ------------------------- Additional History Not all accidents / issues are reported to CARFAX Owner 1 Total Loss No total loss reported to CARFAX. BMW 3-Series Convertible: Worth The Wait Reference: BMW is notoriously deliberate when it comes to releasing new models. When it comes to the 3-Series, the company’s best-selling line with a multitude of configurations, change comes out of Munich in a slow trickle. Observers of this venerable German marque should be used to it by now: the sedan bows, followed by the coupe, with convertible and M-branded models on the distant horizon. The future is now here, and the 3-Series range is complete. For a company whose progress can be charted in exacting fashion with familiar nameplates and engines, the past year has been tumultuous by comparison. Turbochargers appeared on BMW’s smaller road cars for the first time since the 1970’s. The convertible is also making a leap into uncharted territory. The big story for the new E92 drop-top is its retracting hardtop, replacing the conventional soft-top used on the outgoing E46 model. Come to think of it, it’s the first hardtop convertible BMW has ever made. You might be thinking, “jeez, its about time,” but this is BMW we’re talking about, a company that half-bakes nothing. Hardtop convertible tops have been around for some time, even on lower-priced luxury models like Mercedes’ first-generation SLK roadster. However, there are two main drawbacks to such a system. The first is added weight as compared with a soft-top. A multi-paneled metal roof, and the complex mechanisms required to break it up and stuff it in the boot of a car, aren’t light by any stretch of the imagination. Given BMW’s sporting pedigree, a too-high curb weight is a consequence to be avoided at all costs, given its nasty effects on acceleration, handling, and braking. Weight gain in a convertible is unavoidable, even with a soft-top system, due to the additional bracing and chassis re-inforcements required to compensate for the loss of a roof. Thankfully, however, the penalty isn’t anything we couldn’t live with. The heaviest convertible – the 335i with the 6-speed Steptronic – weighs 3,957 lbs. That’s only 375 lb. more than its hardtop counterpart. Performance is largely unaffected, particularly in the 335 models, which are equipped with the 3.0L twin-turbo torque monster motors that make 300hp and 300 lb-ft. of torque starting at just 1500rpm. A 335i convertible with a manual gearbox sprints to 60mph in 5.0 seconds according to BMW, which is just a tenth (give or take) slower than the fixed-roof version. The second main historic drawback to retractable hardtops is the drastic reduction in trunk space when the roof is opened. Stuffing a sandwich of metal panels (three in the BMW’s case) into the boot via an hydraulic mechanism requires a good amount of room. BMW has a clever antidote for this as well. Inside the trunk of this 3-Series, there is a movable shelf. The shelf separates the usable trunk space from the space required for the folded roof, so when packing, you’ll know exactly how much room you’ve got. Nobody really looks for flexible cargo-carrying abilities in a drop-top, but BMW engineered them in anyway. The 3-Series has the next best thing to a split folding rear seat. The one-piece seat cushions flip down at the pull of a handle to reveal a pass-through that’s 15.75 inches wide – enough to accommodate a golf bag (the standard for trunk space everywhere) when the roof is up. When the top is down, the pass-through’s space is more limited. Now, to the top itself. It is a marvel of modern machinery, made of three panels of lightweight steel and operated by a hydraulic system. The roof opens in just 22 seconds, closes in 23, and piles itself smoothly into the boot. BMW claims that “the three-element steel roof structure ensures lower noise levels even at high speeds, enhances safety, creates a more luxurious and comfortable cabin and helps stiffen the chassis to provide precise handling.” Packaging is surely a chief concern also, as we don’t see how the car could do with a fewer number of larger panels. Each of the three panels rests above the other to create a compact metal stack. The boot opens rearward, clamshell-style, and can be opened conventionally once the whole opening/closing process is over and the hardtop is locked. The boot’s lid has a soft-close feature as well – kind of a no-brainer with advanced hydraulic kit like this. Another cool feature is that the roof can be opened by remote control – depending, of course, on the options you choose. It’s not a one-touch operation, though. Interior and remote controls for the top must be depressed for the duration of whatever operation you choose. ll of this performance and techno-wizardry comes at a price, but it’s rather less than we had expected. BMW official pricing starts at $43,975 for the 328i, and $51,875 for the 335i. Not too pricey when you consider that even the 328i is pretty speedy, scooting to 60mph in 6.7 seconds when equipped with a manual transmission. BMW’s cars have always been about more than simply raw numbers, but in the case of the new 3-Series convertible, the numbers are pretty darn good. A four-seat hardtop convertible that weighs under two tons, gets to sixty in under six seconds, and costs under fifty grand is what we’d call another overachiever from the folks in Munich. But a loaded 335 twin turbo runs 5 seconds flat and can cost $65,000. Money still well spent. Any Questions: crosssman@aol.com or call me @ 504.866.2777 Thanx, Rob * * Thank You For Visiting Our Auctions * * Q: Exactly what I've been looking for. A No snow/rust car with very option in a dark exterior and light (cool) interior. However I am selling my 2006 M3 convertible and won't have my money for a few weeks. Anyway to hold... Continue reading A: I can hold it for a few days with a deposit, but sorry I can't hold it for weeks. She's priced for a quick sale and there has been a LOT of interest. Rob 504.866.2777 Q: Will you take a 328 convertible in trade? perfect, not as totally loaded as yours and to be honest a bit slow. Perfect otherwise. 35K miles. My 2008 and $10,000 for yours?? A: Thanks, But the 328 , even the convertible is impossible to sell. It was built as a much cheaper alternative to the 335i and it shows. Sorry. Rob Q: I love the fact this has every option, and the color combo is the best I've seen. The tint on the window, what needs to be done? Very interested. GF A: The tint on the driver's rear window has a quarter size tear that was patched. I can remove all the tint if you wish or for about $30-40 the rear 1/4 window can be re -tinted. Rob 504.866.2777 Question & Answer Q: Hi, Has it been given a clean bill of health from BMW, for the buyback, even though it was just a loose gas cap? ANY issues? thanks. I am from NO..would fly back to pay and drive home. warm regards, Mike A: Turned out it was the high pressure pump, not the gas cap. Either way the 30 days had expired from complaint to being resolved. BMWNA does it's own inspection, pays for an independant inspection and has to certify there are ZERO faults of any kind. Safest way to buy, but the BMW dealers get most of them. Those wacky Californian's and there 20 billion dollar debt from consumer laws like this. Rob 504.866.2777 Q: would you help organize shipping to Canada (Toronto)? Also, just to double check... does this car have both "Always on head lights" and a Child Safety Restraint anchor? These are required to license the vehicle in Canada. A: LATCH attachments on child-restraint safety installation Programmable Daytime Running Lights This is from the factory discription Q: would you help organize shipping to Canada (Toronto)? Also, just to double check... does this car have both "Always on head lights" and a Child Safety Restraint anchor? These are required to license the vehicle in Canada. A: I can assist ot shipping it to a US border to Canada. You need a freight forwarder to handlethe paperwork. Do a google search for auto transportwers in your region and they can probably handle it from start to finish. Yes it has daytime run light. Tha angel eyes around the headlights are VERY bright for daytime. They are selectable for on or off daytime run lights. All BMW's have the front and rear child safety anchors. I've sold quite a few to Canada and it has always been straigtforward. Your dollar is looking good , eh. Rob 504.866.27777 Q: I have a 2004 Carrera 911 I would like to trade. A: Please call me @ 504.866.2777 to discuss. This is a wholesale price so I can only give auction pricing in trade. Rob Q: Yours by far has the best options, color and remaining warranty I've seen. Would you take $40,700 for her? Rick J VERY SERIOUS A: Please call me @ 504.866.2777 and I would be happy to discuss an agreeable price. Rob Q: Do you have any of the California documents/repair records? The CA lemon law suggests that dealer must buy vehicle back only after multiple reasonable attempts to fix problem have failed. Seems a little extreme for a check engine light. Thanks. A: No the whacko CA law is an allegation is the same as a failure .Anything Alleged over 30 days..ANYTHING, and they can be forced to buy back. The CA BMW dealers grab most of these. The disclosure is by law WHY it was repurchased. Same reason CA is going bankrupt, liberal laws. I bought one last year because the cigarette lighter wasn't hot enough, They changed it, he complained again..Over 30 days..BUYBACK Only Florida has a similar law, but much harder to use. I watched the sale today in Riverside and some of the goofy buybacks like this where bringing much mopre than without the buyback. Because under this law they have to put in writing ANY problems the car has and EVERYTHING must be perfect. Brake squeak and ck engine lights are probably the most common. Rob Q: Hello, the last pic. is the only one that shows the "M" badge. Whats up with that? Thank you, Matt A: I put it on. Purchased from the local BMW dealer. If you don't like it I can remove it. The reason I put it on is unlike the AMG pkg for Mercedes which is cosmetic only, the BMW M Sport pkg has different brakes, sway bars, tie rods, bushings, springs, shocks, seats, steering wheel , etc over a base 335. Thought it deserved recognition. Thanks for looking Rob Q: I have a Houston 08 335i Convert. like yours that was flooded last year here in Houston.I don't want another one from here(Too many flood cars here in Texas, and I don't want a rust bucket from the Nort east).... Continue reading A: I won't buy ANYTHING from Texas. No offense to the state. I was born there, But you're in the flood car retail capitol of the world. Sorry but I won't touch a flood or salt damaged(snow) car for any price. Good... Continue reading Q: Would you take $36,500 for it. all cash. A: Thank you but no. Please call me @ 504.8/66.2777 and I'll work with you as close as I can. Rob Q: Love the color and options. Would you take $38,400?? A: Please call me@ 504.866.2777. I'm sure something can be worked out. Rob Q: Greetings, I live in New Orleans and I wonder if I can come by to take a look and test drive the car. Thanks, Vinh. My number is 906 7014. A: Call me tomorrow. No problem Rob 504.866.2777 Q: You know I'm glad I paid for an inspection on yours and the other two. Despite clean Autocheck and Carfax , BOTH had been wrecked. They said yours was all origonal. Will call about payment with my credit union. Rob... Continue reading A: Please notify me of your credit union. If they do not do business in this state it will have to be via bank wire. Thanks, Told ya the car was untouched. Rob 504.866.2777 Q: No paint work? I just flew to look at a couple in Texas, both had been hit before. Clean history though??? A: Why I only buy from the manufacturer. When they state no paint work I have BMWNA's word and experience backing up that claim as in this car. Plus I always ck my cars with a paint meter. NO paint work other than what was... Continue reading Q: LOVE your car. ilive in the quarter and can see it this weekend. I'll call you tonight. GH A: Look forward to your call. Fantastic weather lately!! Rob 504.866.2777 Q: when would this car be available for inspection? A: Anytime...... Rob 504.866.2777
