Vehicle Detail
1985 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesel Sedan Offered for sale is my beloved 1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel Sedan, affectionately known as “Schultz”. I am a die hard car guy and this has been one of my favorites. I respect and care for my vehicles and this one has always returned the respect. I am an Airline Pilot working in Washington, DC and commute via airline from my home near the Alabama-Florida Border. I have had this car in the Northern Virginia/DC area for the past 3 years. It is always faithful, reliable and comfortable. The classic look and feel of this car exceeds its current role as an airport commuter car. I have kids heading to college in the Northeast and find that I need a larger vehicle in the area (diesel van preferred). I would prefer to keep this vehicle, but the task of relocating cars from Florida to DC is too much for my schedule. This can be your gain. History I purchased this car almost 7 years ago. I was told it passed quickly from the original owner to me via a Mercedes Mechanic who performed all the maintenance to bring it to near perfect. I took it from North Carolina to the Alabama/Florida Panhandle where I kept it for several years until I needed a car at work. I have 3 of these Mercedes 123 style, 5 cylinder diesels in my family. I find them to be the most reliable and maintenance free vehicle ever. I encouraged my oldest son to pick this one as his first car, but he preferred another because it was white. This car is a classic southern rust free beauty and has not lived on salted, snow covered roads. I use the car to transit between the BWI/DCA & IAD airports and hotels, and to get around on the occasional day off. It usually gets driven several times a month and has not spent much time in the gridlocked beltway traffic. The Cons This car is 25 years old. It is not a new car. Do not expected it to be in new. The paint is shiny, but it has a couple of dents and several scratches and wear spots. While the glass is great and the dark tinted window film is in otherwise perfect condition, the driver’s side widow tint has a 3 inch wear at the bottom of the window (see picture). On rare occasions the trunk will not unlock via the vacuum locks, but I have no problems ever with the manual release. The air conditioner is not working. I had a new compressor installed before leaving Florida. It threw a belt last year and I suspect the compressor is locked up. (The shop near home has agreed to warranty it, but 500 miles each way is too far for the free repair). The Pros The car is incredibly reliable. I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere in the continent. Except for the AC, everything works: turbo, cruise control, vacuum locks, power antenna, electric sunroof and electric windows, super hot heater and rear defrost. Brand new tires. Recent preventative maintenance includes a new water pump, glow plugs, battery, shocks and brakes. The seats have no tears or rips. The dash has no cracks. It is completely stock except for the Sony stereo (CD/MP3/Ipod input) and upgraded speakers. I have the original Becker Radio. It chugs down the road as steady as a sewing machine. It handles marvelously. It is smooth and stable to 90 mph (only a closed course with a professional driver, of course). It feels open and breezy with the large sunroof and 4 big windows open. It is great on the diesel, always getting 26-28 mpg. It is a timeless beauty that will last many, many more years. This is arguably the longest lasting engine and vehicle ever built, many of these vehicles go well beyond 500,000 miles. It is an easy conversion candidate for veggie oil. Pictures and Video Additional pictures are at www.mikefoam.com/benz A video of the car starting and running is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGwCBPXCgOA The portable subwoofer and amplifer in the pictures do not convey. I assume most prospective buyers of this car would not desire these, thus they are not included. .
