Vehicle Detail
1929 Durant M-2 Sedan! From the man who founded GM!! William C. Durant After an attempt to buy Ford Motor Company in 1907 failed because Henry Ford wanted to be paid in cash, Durant established the General Motors Company the next year. He began with the Buick and added Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Oakland (Pontiac), and other lesser companies. Durant overextended himself, and by 1910 General Motors needed the intervention of a bankers' syndicate to lift the burden of debt. Durant returned to the automobile business in 1911 with the Chevrolet car. In 1916, with the backing of the Du Pont family, he recovered control of General Motors. In 1919 General Motors was one of the largest American industrial enterprises, but Durant exercised little control over its operation; General Motors was too decentralized to be effective. When the Panic of 1920 occurred, Durant was overcommitted in the stock market. He tried unsuccessfully to support the price of General Motors stock; he was forced out of the company in 1920 by the Du Ponts, who wanted to protect their investments. When you look at this car, you see more then a car from the late 20's. You are looking at a piece of American History in its true sense. One man had a dream and tried to make that dream a reality. The Big 3, which one of them was started by Durant, eventually pushed him out. The same happened to the Tucker Corp in the 40's as well. Buts its guys like Durant, that this country was originally built upon. People that have certain visions and aren't afraid to go after their dreams regardless of the results. I have taken as many pictures as I can to depict the condition of this car. I have pictures that I have scanned in that were taken of the restoration. This is a true frame off restoration and the condition is show quality. When I purchased this vehicle, I sat and spoke with the previous owner and asked why he seeked out a Durant as a restoration project. He bought the car out of Texas 6 years ago and prior to that the car laid resting in a barn since 1967. He initially wanted a solid old car for a hot rod conversion but when he got the car, he realized that to do that, would destroy the history of this vehicle. He didn't really want it to be "another hot rod". Since he was a GM guy he researched Durant and figured it would be a nice tribute to a man and his dream. Over 130 hours were put into the wood work alone of this vehicle. The motor was completely rebuilt. The gear box has been removed, cleaned and resealed. The gas tank was sent out, cleaned and repressurized. Tires have been replaced, the mohair interior has been tastefully done and matches the decor of the 20's. Restoration spanded over 6 years and you can tell in the appearance of the car. As we now look at the current pictures its almost like we've stepped back in time. When I look at this car I can almost feel the sense of pride Durant had when these cars rolled out. Here he was, rolling with the Big Guys on barely paved roads that started the American Highways. Please look at the pictures and the detail of this restoration. Now, I must point out that the paint is excellent, but its not perfect. It could use maybe a wet sand and a buff and compared to today's standard of paint jobs it doesn't hold a candle to it. However, you have to realize the technology of the 1920's paint job is no more then a guy and a hose dumping paint on the car, so I would have to say the car looks much better then when it rolled out of the Durant plant back in 1929. I had the car striped with custom hand made colors to accent the car and bring it all together. Yes, the stripes are painted on by a professional and were very tastefully done. Driving this car is quite the experience. The original drivetrain, which is a 4cyl. 3 speed, can reach a top speed close to 40 mph. You're not going to win any races off the line at a traffic light and I wouldn't recommend taking this Durant on the highway. This car drives with a story. And for the people that know the story behind the car will tell thier family and friends what this car stands for now and what it meant the day it rolled off the assembly line. And for those that are confused and ask what kind of car this is, the story of William C. Durant is reborn and history will again, repeat itself. Regardless of the story, EVERYONE will stop and stare as you roll by them. Two things you must know about the car.The speedometer does not work and the brakes could use a good adjustment. The brakes stop the car fine, but I was told by the previous owner they should be adjusted to all match up. However, at speeds at almost 40 mph you could almost just stick your foot out and stop it that way if you had to. (just kidding and please don't try that). Please look at the pictures and study the detail of them. Also enjoy the video of the car as well. This auction is open to anyone and everyone. Please share this auction with your friends because its not very often you'll see a Durant restored to its original state. This is a rare oppurtunity to own a peice of American History and to capture how one man could rattle the cages of the Big 3. The story of William C. Durant is as rare as the car itself.
