Vehicle Detail

RE LISTED, LOWERED RESERVE! This XJ-S is a very early car, that has led a pampered life, and has survived in it's original state. There are not many of these early pre-HE cars left, that have not suffered from the GM V8 conversion or trim upgrades to make the car look more like the later HE model. When Jaguar first announced the car to the world on September 9th, 1975, the XJ-S was lauded as the first true supercar with space for 4.(The rear seat passengers were very cramped, it must be said!)This particular car was one of the first retail deliveries in the USA, being delivered on October 9th, 1975. I am the 4th owner of this car, and it is with great regret that I find myself listing the car for sale. These early cars are, in my opinion, the very essence of what a Jaguar grand tourer is all about. More sophisticated and more powerful, than the later, more common, HE variants, and in this particular car, a TRUE survivor, with ALL of it`s original heritage and pedigree intact. The previous owner to me, told me of the first owner being a pop superstar from New Jersey. I have not been able to corroborate this. The car is perfect and fully functional in all respects, save possibly for the a/c, which I have not tested, as there is no R12 refrigerant available in Canada, to recharge the system with. Currently shod with a nearly new set of tires, I have the original tires that came with the car in my barn. The paint on the car is mostly original, there having been the odd touch up here and there. I have NOT repainted the car, as I am into originality, and personally, think it would lose it's appeal to repaint the car. The next owner can do what he/she prefers. In summary, here is a very rare, ALL ORIGINAL, early production, JAGUAR XJ-S coupe. It may or may not, have had a celebrity first owner, but is pretty much exactly as it left the factory, with the only enhancements being patina. The current radio in the car, is a DUAL AM/FM radio cassette, with an IPOD jack, to allow modern tunes. There is no power amp fitted, but the next owner might find that an advantage. To be honest, I don't play the radio when I am in the car.The car is road worthy, and the mileage may well be more by the end of the auction as I do drive it.There is a reserve, it is reasonably low for the quality of the car, I will not disclose the reserve, this is an auction, and the car will be sold to the highest bidder once the reserve is met. Here are the Q&As from the first listing, to save people asking the same questions this time around; Q: According to Jag. list. this VIN is actually a 1976 (UF is 75) and this is #285 made in 1976 model year..... Sep-04-10 A: Officially there were no 1975 model year XJ-S cars, as the launch was September 9th 1975, which would have put the cars firmly in the 1976 model year, and yes, the UG in the VIN # denotes the car as a '76 model year car, but there were no UF retail deliveries, All the UF prefixed cars were the development, 'mules' used by the factory prior to launch, for press evaluation and were supposed to be destroyed before the public launch. I did have a a pre-release car in the UK a few years ago. Interesting that you have been able to determine that this is the 285th car produced. It goes to show, that Jaguar cars were none to accurate in their production numbering back in the day! The VIN# suggests the car is the 453rd US spec LHD car produced? Q: Where in Ontario are you located? Thanks Sep-04-10 A: I am about 100 kms east of Toronto, near Port Hope. Q: Was looking for early XJS..but you stated 'have not touched paint' 'into originality'....who painted the bumpers then? Is there any shine left on the bodies paint job? Sep-04-10 A: Hi, The bumpers have not been painted. The early XJ-S cars all had black 'rubber' bumpers. These were the same for all pre-HE cars up to 1981 when the chrome bumpers came with the 'new' HE cars. There is quite a lot of 'shine left on the original paint, but in the lower areas of the car, where the sun hasn't 'bleached' the paint. Q: what is the reserve price Sep-03-10 A: Please read the auction notes, I will not reveal the reserve. If you are interested in the car then please bid on it. The reserve is hidden. I will say that it is very much lower than other cars that have recently sold on eBay, without the possible Bruce Springsteen connection. Q: Can you tell me a bit of history of where the car spent most of its life and if there is any rust or collision issues on the body? Thanks. Sep-02-10 A: As I was told be the owner prior to me, the car ws first delivered to the celebrity in New Jersey, where it stayed for the first year or so of it's life, then it was bought by a Cadillac Dealer Principal, for his wife, in the Buffalo are of upstate NY. She kept the car until the late '80s driving it only on high days and holidays, and ONLY in good weather. She died, and the son, sold the car to his top salesman, who kept the car, using it sparingly only in good weather, through to the time when I bought it. The car had been in storage for a few years, but the previous owner did drive it in the warehouse, each week to keep things 'moving'. I bought the car and brought it into Canada, June last year. There are no collision issues, the car has never been hit, there are a couple of parking lot dings, on the passenger door. There is also no rust on the car, either on top or underneath. There is an area on the hood, which shows stress 'cracking' for want of a better word, which is due to the heavy duty hood shocks that a previous owner has fitted. The car drives like a new car, and I am reluctantly offering it for sale. Q: Hello, Not a question but a couple comments... Lovely car, first off. I follow XJS auctions on ebay pretty closely and this is one of the more impressive cars in recent months. One doesn't see too many 75's, although interestingly they are more common than any other year until the HE, at least in my anecdotal experience. What I wanted to let you know, though, is a possible half-confirmation of your Bruce Springsteen connection. Several years ago I saw a craigslist add for a '75 XJS in Pennsylvania or New Jersey -- can't remember exactly. It was silver with a red interior. The owner claimed in his short write-up that it was one of the first cars imported to the US and was nearly purchased by the Boss, who desperately wanted an XJS, only to be passed over by him in the end because he particularly wanted a silver car with a black interior. Of course I remembered this story when I saw your car. It seems too random a story not to contain an element of truth... Good luck. Jeremy Sep-02-10 A: Wow! Thank you so much for contacting me. It tallies almost exactly with the story I was given when I bought the car. I was told that the Boss wanted a silver on black car, but was presented with a silver on red car, which he refused because the early cars all had black center consoles, and with any other interior color than black, this made it look odd, and he waited for this car, which was a month later. Ironically enough, the first year's production was severely reduced, because of strike action in the UK, and I know this for a fact, because I used to own car#776, which only 300 or so after this car, wasn't built until April 1976! So thanks again, Jeremy, for sort of half confirming the story that was given t me when I bought the car. It seems likely there is some truth to the BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN connection after all,if there is anybody out there that has any pictures of Bruce Springsteen with the car from the period, then this would help confirm it definitively,or any COLUMBIA RECORDS execs from the time that can shed light onto the ownership,I would be very grateful. It doesn't make any difference to the reserve on the car, this is still as it was, very reasonable indeed, if the BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN connection can be confirmed!
