Vehicle Detail
For Sale: a 1971 Mercury Cougar Convertible. I bought this car from my dentist in 2004. He got it as a leftover at the beginning of 1972. He and his wife drove it as a second car for a number of years and then his three kids all drove it to high school. In 1989, when the last kid started college, he parked it in his garage until I got it in 2004. Sometime between 1972 and 1989, it received a replacement engine and I think a paint job. To the best of my knowledge, this car has not run since my dentist put it into his garage. Last week I put a battery in and was able to lower and raise the top; it worked well. (Battery not included.) I then disconnected the coil and tried to crank the engine but all I got was a click and the engine did not crank. The driver's seat back, that you can see in the photo, has the bolt that connects the back to the bottom disconnected. I tried to reinstall it but I didn't have enough hands! I think that the seat will have to be removed to reinstall that bolt. The floors seem to be OK. All the doors open and close great but it has rusty spots and rust-outs, particularly the bottoms of the doors and the lower rear behind the rear wheels. I bought this as a project for me and my son but he never had the time in high school to work on it and now he is away most of the time. I stored it next to my garage with a tarp covering the soft top, but last winter a branch dropped on it and smashed the windshield. I think the time has come for me to pass this on---at least for parts---before a whole tree falls on it! The engine is a 351 Cleveland with a 4 barrel carburetor. I put a 999999 mileage number in the ebay listing because it wanted a number but I have no idea about the true mileage of this car since it is 39 years old, on its second motor and the odometer only goes to 99999.9. I have a good, transferable New Jersey title. Please feel free to send me any and all questions and I will try to answer them. Thanks for reading this and happy bidding.
