Mercury Capri can best be summed up as a special interest "sporty" convertible, styled by Italians, built by Australians, with Japanese mechanicals. The Ford/Mercury Capri came about because Ford of Australia (APAO) had an interest in building & marketing an export project vehicle. The initial approval & funding was given in 1984, to develop a small front wheel drive, roadster. All Capris were convertibles, with an optional removable steel hardtop, Capris were manufactured from 1989-1994 in the Melbourne Australia, Broadmeadows assembly plant & marketed primarily in Australia & the United States. The production Capri was based on the successful 1983 Ford of Europe, Fiesta-based Ghia-designed 2-seat convertible called the Barchetta (little boat). The Capri Exterior was styled by Ford's "Ghia" design studio. The engineering, the interior & folding roof were done by "Ital design" an Italian engineering/design firm. The Ford product progress manager was Dave Fewchuck. He was assigned to the Capri project in early 1984. Dave saw the Capri through development, manufacturing, marketing & was in charge of the brand until production ended. There were 2 models the base version, and the upgraded turbo charged XR2. Both had DOHC 1.6 liter engines (96 ci). The base version was rated at an even 100 HP at 5750 RPM, and 95ft/LB of torque at 5500 RPM, while the XR2 turbo engine was rated at 132 HP at 6000 RPM and 136 ft/LB of torque at 3000 RPM. A fully synchronized five speed manual transmission was standard. A four speed EAT (Electronic Automatic Transmission) was available only on the base non turbo model. The "Ford Capri" was initially offered in Australia 1989. In late 1990 it was marketed & sold in the US as a "Mercury Capri". The final year of production 1994 Ford of Australia assembled less than 4,000 Capris & of that number only 366 were XR2s. The last Capri rolled off the production line on 19th May 1994. This vehicle was retained by Ford and is held at the Ford Discovery Centre, in Geelong Australia, along with the first model (SA30) that was produced in Oct 1988. There is to be said that only 125 to 275 exist today. #366 is in the Ford Museum, where will you put mine once you buy it? My car is not on the registry. There is only 1 other known Magenta XR-2 that is on the registry in Australia. This is a real XR-2 Ladies and Gentlemen. Black leather seating and a factory back seat for the kids to enjoy this treasure as well. So whats been done? Eibach Performance Springs, Custom exhaust 2.25 pipe high Flow Cat and Porsche Racing Schnell Tips coming together in the middle. I have $1,500.00 in the exhaust. 17" Italian Wheels, Hardtop Painted to match, K&N Charcoal Filter. Debadged and has the original Ford Emblem on the nose. Hardtop cover Factory tonnau cover leather covers the car with the top down. I bought this from a Ford Excutive in Michigan in the year of 2003. He was the orignal owner and bought it out of lease. I am the second owner and bought it with 29k on the clock and put 18k on it in 7 years. Condition This car is in excellent condition for a 16 year old car. It has always been garaged and has been a driver for me. The leather seating looks excellent and there is no cracks with very little wear. The headliner does not match and is starting to sag in spots, I was going to replace it but never did. The Wheels have minor scratches on them. The canvas top needs a window but I was going to put a soft canvas like the bmw's. The top itself is fine. One parking lamp lense has a chip in it but I think I have a spare. All the extra parts that I have go with the car, hardtop carrier touch up paint and many spares. I have the original alloys and original tires that came with the car. I just had new 205 40 r17 tires put on the front and the rears are about 70%. AC needs a recharge never used it. The airbag light comes on and I have the airbag sensor I just never installed it This car is ready for a long distance trip, buy fly in and drive home is would be a good experience. Magenta is a very hard color to find. Car is stored Indoors. Always serviced at my local Ford Dealer. This car is not replaceable. Mechanical condition This car runs as well as it when it left the factory. The exhaust is one of a kind and many people say that it sounds like a Mazda Rotary motor. It is a very tuned sound not annoying but built for performance. It is very nimble in the corners and handles excellent in tight turns. The engine is mostly stock and the boost pressure has not been messed with. The mechanical condition of this car is a 10. There is no clutch chatter no gear noise in the transmission and no known fluid leaks. It has been recently aligned with a four wheel alignment. All the electrical works excellent power windows do not slow down and the power door locks work fine. This car is ready to go. Terms of Sale WARNING! If you bid, intend to buy.
