Vehicle Detail

1950 Morris MM (Minor) Tourer Convertible Specifications: VIN: SMM 52644 Mileage: 6,571 (It is entirely unknown if this is original) Engine: 918cc Side-Valve Inline Four Transmission: 4-Speed Manual (Floor Shift) Points in brief: A rare, left-hand-drive US model in remarkable condition No rust issues of any kind - 100% solid from top to bottom Very recent hand-sewn leather interior Runs and drives well enough to be a daily driver - excellent mechanical health Has original US model tag, showroom floor hang tags, and manual A very early Minor model with split bumpers and windscreen Click here to see over 60 photos of this car Offered for sale is a remarkable example of the very collectible Morris MM (Minor) Tourer, an early 1950 model in remarkable vintage condition. From the decades-old lacquer finish to the freshly installed leather seating, this charming vehicle is simply amazing to look at and drive. It has been incredibly well preserved, and has no corrosion issues of any kind on the body or frame - its 100% solid throughout (I will try to add photos of the underneath during the auction, but rest assured it is rust-free). All of the running gear is set up as it came from the factory, and the mechanicals and suspension have been given a very recent and thorough freshening-up at a professional repair shop with the cost of mechanical work done exceeding $4000. It is extremely reliable, and starts, runs and drives every time with no issues of any kind. This is a very easy to own and maintain classic car, with parts still available from a multitude of suppliers. The purchase of a house necessitates this sale, so I will be running it with no reserve to encourage bidding - this car will sell to the high bidder at the final bid price. The exterior is in very good condition, with a very old Gray-Green lacquer paint job that shows very well with a charming patina. The paint has worn thin in a few spots, exposing primer beneath in a way that shows a very appealing "vintage original" look. It would look very much at home in a museum. There is also road wear around the car that very much befits a clean original look of a car that is driven. The chrome is in very good condition all around, with only the hood and fender trim in front showing pitting (new pieces are included if you want to install them). The windshield and door trim are very clean and solid, and the glass is nice and clear. The rims have been given a professional freshen-up with matching paint, and sport BF Goodrich bias-ply tires with tubes for a very original look. The body-stripe paint line was just redone, and looks great. The convertible top was installed recently, and looks very nice all around, with a clear back window and snap-on cover. The side windows have significant yellowing of the vinyl, but have no tears or splits, and are 100% original including the canvas storage bag - amazing that this is still with the car. The headlights and taillights are clean and original, and the very cool "trafficators" are working as they should - these electrically raise themselves when a driver operates the turn signal switch inside the car - more than just about any other feature, these intrigue just about anyone looking at the car: The interior is in very nice condition throughout, with a very expensive freshen-up including original front seats trimmed to factory specs with genuine leather, and the rear done in a high-quality synthetic. The dash and steering wheel are original and in far better condition than their age might suggest, and the carpet was new at the same time as the seats. The door panels have also been recovered in the factory style, and the knobs, switches, cranks, and even the heater fan are operating as they should. A modern Panasonic CD player is hidden on the under-dash shelf, and has been installed in such a way that it can be entirely removed (along with the speakers) in a matter of minutes - there were no modifications/drilling/cuttings of any kind performed on the install of the radio, which sits in a hand-made wooden case with fuse to insulate from the positive ground chassis. The wiring through to the hood utilized existing holes with fresh grommets. The radio has an auxiliary input for an iPod/iPhone/Sat radio. Along with the car, there is a nice amount of original documentation and equipment. Included is the original manual, a build-sheet specifying that this was a left-hand-drive US model, an original accessory catalog, two showroom hang-tags instructing new owners how to operate the hood and jack the car, a reproduction Lucas electrics manual, and the stereo manual. Equipment includes the original hand-crank (yes - a hand crank to start the motor if battery is weak), the fabric snap cover for the folded-down top, the original jack and lug wrench, the canvas bag for the removable rear passenger windows, a matching full-size spare tire, and a very old looking hand air pump (dont know if this came with the car or not). I will also include the very vintage keychain advertising GE vacuum tubes. Recent servicing on this car included a full four-wheel brake job on its original drum/drum system, a carburetor rebuild, new exhaust, fuel sending unit and filter, oil, filter, spark plugs, body-lube, points, blade-style battery quick-disconnect for storage, throttle-cable, radiator flush and hoses, tie rods, suspension bushings, wheel balancing, and sump gasket. The motor idles and suns smoothly, delivering as much power as the little flat four is capable of. The clutch is adjusted to factory specs, and the gears shift extremely well. In all, this car has seen in excess of $6000 of work in the last couple of years, both cosmetic and mechanical. It is the most dependable and confidence-inspiring classic car I have ever driven. If you are looking for an easy-to-own classic car that easily collects enthusiasm and admiration from onlookers, then this is the one. It is in absolutely charming condition all around, and mechanically excellent. You are unlikely to find a more original Morris out there, and particularly an early MM model that wasnt nearly so prolific as later versions. Buy with confidence, this is a truly remarkable car. A note about the Morris MM - these early cars were produced from 1948-1953, with only the US models being equipped with the "hump" headlights to meet American standards. Early models were widened (like this one) from the factory prototype, necessitating the bumper to be split and a painted section installed to accommodate the new width - this is also visible in the creases in the bonnet. Only MMs (and not later 1000 models) incorporate this neat bit of engineering. Additionally, only the MM had a very cool split windshield, with later models using a more modern assembly. From the bias-ply tires to the real glass taillights, any onlooker can tell right away that this car is old, and in amazing age-relative condition.
