Vehicle Detail
This is a 1965 Mercury Comet station wagon with 83, 422 original miles. It was used as a regular summertime driver through 2008, when the transmission went out. It has been in the barn ever since. Despite the recent regular use, and the fact that the 289 2-barrel will fire right up on the first try, this Comet should be considered either as a parts car, or a very significant restoration project. The station wagon body-style was fairly rare, so you classic enthusiasts could have a worthwhile project here. First the good: The car is completely original, has been in the same family since it was driven off the car lot in 1965, and has the highly-desirable 289 V8 engine with 83,422 miles. The motor starts right up and sounds terrific, though it does appear to have had leaky valve covers for some time as there is some oil caked on it. See pics. The not so good: As stated before, the tranny needs a complete rebuild. The upholstery has seen better days, and the body of the vehicle has some dents, dings, and moderate rust that I have tried to capture in the photos. For really specific details, feel free to email me. The rear bumper will need to be replaced, as it is badly dented in a couple of places. The bad: The undercarriage of this vehicle is badly rusted out. It is for this reason we are deciding to finally part with this old family favorite. The work required to fix this issue is significant, and not worth it in our opinion for a car that spends 10 months out of the year in the barn. As you can see in one photo, there is a hole rusted through to the left of the brake pedal. This enabled us to was our feet while driving through puddles :) Overall, this is a cool car that gets lots of comments, but it will require repairs, a little or a lot, depending on what you want to do with it. Please contact me for questions. Thanks. By the way, that is debris from the trees on the hood, not a bunch of rusty spots I've added two photos of the passenger side, and will try to get some photos from underneath as many of you have asked for. Thanks. New pics of underneath have been added. Tailgate and rear window assembly are operable.
