Vehicle Detail
Mechanically in very good condition and a solid runner with over $10k in improvements all documented. My goal is to describe it from my perfectionist point of view. That is, these are the things that I would fix if I were to keep the car to bring it back to it's true glory. From what I can tell, the car has had body work done around the lower door sills and perhaps in other areas where it's bubbling. It's hard to tell if there is body work done underneath the areas that are bubbling but I would suspect that that may be the source of the bubbling or that it was improperly prepped. When the car was repainted by the previous owner, it was not matched to the original Porsche blue which still exists in the trunk areas. There isn't a huge variation between the two but it is a different blue. The original hood was damaged and rusty at the front lip and body work had been done to it and the latch didn't work properly. In response, I purchased a used hood and had it professionally painted to match the existing body color. It now looks and operates perfectly. The previous repaint of the car doesn't appear to have been done by a professional body shop either. I say that because there are some areas of overspray on some rubber gasket seals and the underlying surfaces do not appear to have been prepped well. It's not horrible but it has aspects that appear amateurish to me. For example, the paint job doesn't have a high gloss to it and I can see imperfections unevenness in the metal on the body sides and on the rear fender panels and there are a few small dimples in the trunk lid that should have been addressed before repainting. The front and rear fender appears solid with not rust holes with the exception of the small pin holes in the gasket tray of the front fender. The spare tire floor area appears to have had some pounding done to it but is otherwise solid with some surface rust. The front trunk metal gasket track that traces the outline of the front trunk is rusty with some pea size holes visible when you remove the gasket. (I replaced the gasket to improve the sealing of the hood but I still take the gasket out after washing the car so that water doesn't get trapped under the gasket and worsen the position. The bubbling areas exist on the front fenders where it meets the cowl metal. There is also bubbling on the driver side of the car next to the door handle. Both doors have rust on the bottom edges of the doors which I noticed when I replaced the door seals. In some areas the rust goes all the way through. There is a bit of bubbling in the chrome of the rear bumper maybe about the size of a quarter. It's about the size of a quarter so you have to get very close to see the bubble. The driver's side front and rear floor pans should be replaced. I have a new replacement front floor pan. The previous owner welded in a piece of metal around the gas pedal area which does the trick but doesn't look nice from underneath. The driver's side rear floor has rust going through which I discovered when replacing the emergency brake system. I filled the holes with body filler and covered it with primer to help preserve and seal it for now. In doing that, I did see rust in some of the other in the floor pan side walls. When underneath the car, the only imperfections or rust areas are the ones that I previously mentioned on the driver's side. The rear trunk compartment has no areas that are rusted through. There is some surface rust by the taillights but it does not go through. The engine compartment appears to be mostly rust free and the battery tray is intact. I can tell that there is rust in the "hell hole" area under the battery but I don't believe it goes through. In crawling under the car, I couldn't see a hole of any kind. When I had the driver's side rear tire off to take pictures. I did find a quarter size rust hole in the back fender which is hidden externally by the bumper. There are small dings here and there in the body and around the fender skirts but no rusting that I can tell. I have replaced the inner and outer door seals, the front and rear trunk seals, the exterior window door wind seals and the plastic seals between the fenders and the cowl. I have redone the entire heating system and exhaust so all components were either refinished or replaced with new ones including the fresh air blower box, grill and seal. The entire braking system has been replaced with new calipers and shoes, master cylinder and the emergency brake cables have been replaced. The tires are close to new. I replaced the front seats with used ones because the previous ones had some larger tears in them. The replacements are nice but not perfect. There are a couple small tears in the driver seat on the side near the arm rest and the passenger seat has rip in the rubber in the seat. It doesn't go through to the foam padding. The windshield has no cracks however is does have some wiper scratches. I replaced the steering wheel and upgraded it to a used leather one. The engine is strong and was tuned up last year by the Porsche dealer when I also had the fuel pump replaced. When it was tuned up, they also adjusted the valves. 914's are known to have inner gas tank lining deterioration so I had the gas tank lining furbished. Again, in great mechanical condition with most all work done by the local Porsche dealer. Includes car manual and case, period correct tool kit, jack, custom car cover, original radio and speakers.
