Vehicle Detail

1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass/442 Convertible freshly painted in beautiful Code 75 Matador Red If you have been looking for that classic muscle car investment then this rare Classic Muscle Car Convertible just may have your name on it! I don't know one guy out there that wouldn't love a red 442 convertible. These 1970's muscle cars have incredible investment potential and have often been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Why not make your money work for you while you enjoy yourself at the same time? Remember! When the top goes down the price goes up! This Olds does have the original numbers matching Rocket engine. I double checked the numbers and they do match the vehicle identification number. The majority of all the components on this engine are believed to be the original parts. It took me over seven years to talk the previous owner into giving up his pride and joy. I happened to finally catch him at the right moment after he opened up his own restaurant and needed the money for his business. I have kept this car stored inside during my time with this red beauty and will continue to do so until it goes to its new home. When I made the purchase this was a very clean car with no visible rust on the body. The paint was just faded, so it needed to be freshened up. With each passing year, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find a Matador Red 442 with White stripes in a convertible. Everyone who knows these cars knows this color and interior combination is one of the most popular and most desirable. This paintwork was done with a full gallon of code 75 Matador Red paint with the White W-30 stripes buried under a full gallon of top quality clear coat. The body was meticulously wetsanded at three different levels. First used was 1000 grit wet sand paper followed by 2000 grit and finished with 2500 grit to bring out the mirror finish as evident from the pictures. No expense was spared to try and make this car look really spectacular. This Olds starts right up and drives down the road beautifully. The winning bidder will most likely have endless thumbs up wherever they drive. You should have an outgoing personality to drive a car like this, because everywhere you go people will be attracted to you like a magnet. Your arm might get tired of waving at people, so be prepared. The options on this Oldsmobile include Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Convertible Top, Genuine GM Ram-Air Hood, Genuine GM Ram-Air Air Cleaner with a brand new foam seal, Whale Tail Spoiler, Front and Rear Sway Bars, 442 Sport Steering Wheel, Bucket Seats, Console with Dual Gate Shifter, Rally Gauges, Tic-Toc-Tac, Sport Mirrors, Super Stock II Wheels, Genuine GM Cut-Out rear bumper with genuine GM chrome trumpet exhaust tips, and Tinted Glass. This droptop has it all!! The convertible top is less then two years old, so it is in very good condition and features the glass back window option. The top goes up and down very nicely through the switch on the dash. The white California convertible top boot is included inside the trunk. That can be placed over the convertible top when the top goes down into the well liner behind the back seat. The doors still open and close like back in 1972 with new rubber gaskets around both doors. Steering these cars is simply a delight with the 442 Sport steering wheel. This one has finger tip control and drives down the road straight as an arrow. There are brand new wiper blades and the wipers work on both speeds with a brand new washer fluid container under the hood and a brand new anti-freeze over flow container as well. All the original seat belts are present for a family of five. The bucket seats were professionally reupholstered, so they should be nice and comfortable for many years to come. The inside door panels and the rear back side panels are brand new, so the silver trim around the woodgrain looks excellent. The original silver trim on those interior side panels are often long gone over the years, and such was the case with this car, so it was time for an upgrade. The oil and oil filter were both changed in preparation of this sale. This engine was upgraded to electronic ignition to allow it to start up every time the key is turned. Brand new AC Delco copper top spark plugs were installed last week with brand new 8MM spark plug wires for maximum spark. A brand new battery was installed yesterday with new terminal ends. The fuel pump was replaced recently, so this Rocket fires right up and runs great. The heater core was replaced last week, so the heat really cranks. There is nothing like cruising on a chilly day with the top down and the windows up with the heat blasting. Anyone who has owned one of these cars before knows how hot the heaters are. All the inside mechanisms for all four windows were lubricated so they go up and down nicely. I tried to place all of the original factory decals in the correct spots in the engine compartment, door jambs, and under the trunk lid to make this car appear factory correct as a W-30 the way they rolled off the show room floor. According to the OldsFaqs website only 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. They said whether a particular model is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly. If it were a real W-30 it would have an X in the middle of the vehicle identification number in 1972 only. This particular model was simply made to look like a W-30 model. The red fender wells that were notorious on the 70 and 71 W-30 models were only red on the very first ten 1972 W-30's that rolled off the assembly line in December of 1971, so I left the original black fender wells on this car. I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership as a true 442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model up until 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website made the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door. The front and the rear floor pans were the originals on this car, but the drivers side did have some patchwork done. From everywhere I inspected the frame appears in very good condition, so I'm assuming it has been garage kept for the majority of its 45 year existence. The prior owner is believed to be the second owner. The black carpeting is newer with the extra sound deadening padding and there is a set of four brand new black carpeted floor mats. Brand new door sills were installed, so opening these doors with the brand new chrome door handles and stepping inside the cockpit is always a treat. Especially at night with the top down as you open up the door and all four courtesy lights come on and lights up the interior it really is a sight to behold. This Olds rides on a set of four brand new Mastercraft GT 225/70R14 inch raised white lettered steel belted radial tires on Super Stock II wheels painted at the same time as the body to match the body perfectly. All four wheels have all new chrome lug nuts, all four bolt-on center caps, and a set of all four brand new beauty trim rings, so scraping them against a curb will be left up to the new owner. No scratches on these beauty trim rings! This convertible has front and rear sway bars and there is a 10-bolt rear-end, but I am unaware of the gear ratio. The original trunk floor was coated with A/C Delco black and aqua spatter spray for the trunk to stay in nice condition for many years to come. The trunk carries a full size Super Stock II spare wheel with a matching same size Mastercraft raised white lettered spare tire, and the nicely restored original jack, jack stand, bumper mount, and crow bar. This way if there is ever a mishap on the road with a quick tire change you can be back on the road in minutes looking complete. Also included is a fire extinguisher. It is always a good idea to protect your investment. The original dash pad has some minor imperfection on the passenger side, so I ordered a brand new pad that will be delivered and included by the end of the auction. The original plastic chrome strip that surrounds the dash is still intact. The sound system is a Pioneer Super Tuner AM/FM CD player with Blaupunkt speakers under the dash and Jensen Triaxal speakers mounted behind the rear seat. This way when the top is down in the well and the rear speakers get muffled by the top being in the well music can actually be heard with the top down. The speedometer shows just over 74,000 original miles and is believed to be accurate, but there is no way to verify the mileage as 100% correct. The majority of states have mileage as exempt on cars 10 years or older. The original 1972 Cutlass/442 owner's manual and the 1972 Oldsmobile Always A Step Ahead dealer catalog are included with this sale. The catalog was issued by the dealer with all 25 Oldsmobile models and all the colors and options you could order on each particular Olds back in 1972. I have to say it is quite fascinating and a treat to browse through. This sale is being made with an Illinois title that is open, clean, and clear. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find in this condition. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible with the Rocket 350/180 horsepower V8 L-34 option listed at $62,810 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. They have the average condition listed at $41,910, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! Nada has the lowest condition value at $26,510 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. The numbers don't lie! This Matador Red Convertible is a very valuable classic automobile! To sum things up this red beauty has all the 442 items a true 442 guy looks for on a 442. The ram-air hood, whale tail, bucket seats, console with a dual gate shifter, rally gauges, tic-toc-tac, sway bars, and a cut-out back bumper with chrome trumpet exhaust tips. There's not much more a 442 guy could ask for other than a Matador Red one with white stripes in a convertible. I have added more brand new items to this convertible then any car I have ever done before. It takes an exorbitant amount of time, money, and effort to make a classic car appear like this so please make sure you have your funds in order. The PayPal deposit is due within 24 hours and the balance is to be paid in full within 72 hours. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have shown to consistently escalate in value with each quarter. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. Maybe this one is for the guy or gal that wanted one like the cool guy had in high school. This would be an ideal convertible to show up at the next high school reunion to prove how cool you still are. I tried to list everything I know about this car when writing this description. If you feel I may have left anything out please ask as many questions as you like. This Red Beauty is being offered for the very first time on a quick 5-day "No Reserve" auction and will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening at 8pm Eastern time, 7pm Central time, and 5pm Pacific time. There are plenty of local car shows to attend this season so don't miss out!! Thank you for taking the time to view my auction!!! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!On Sep-07-17 at 23:15:24 PDT, seller added the following information: I just thought I would mention that I inadvertently clicked the a/c box when writing up this listing. This car was not ordered with air, but there are places that sell a complete aftermarket a/c system for around $1000 if the next owner would like.
