OVERVIEW Bone dry 1985 VW Cabriolet with only 59,000 original miles. We have owned this Cabby for over 3 years and have put over 3000 miles on her during that time. This is our fun 3rd car that was only used in the late spring, summer and fall. Always garaged and never used in snow/rain. During our ownership we have replaced the timing belt, water pump, brakes, heater core, alternator and battery. Oil changed every year. EXTERIOR Car is 99% rust free. There is one small rust spot at the lower end of the rear passenger fender that is really only affecting the paint (as seen in pics). The underlying metal is solid. This spot was there when we purchased her in the spring of '14 and has not grown a millimeter. Paint appears original and could use a good buffing but is otherwise very presentable. There are several small garage dings on the passenger door (they are so minor they are hard to capture in the pic) but none have broken the paint. All glass is perfect. Chrome on the bumpers is brilliant. Bumpers themselves are rock-solid. Convertible top is free of rips/tears. Rear glass is perfect. Comes with tonneau cover although one of the tonneau snaps is missing. Tires were new when we bought her and have miles of tread left. INTERIOR The interior is in amazing condition for a 32yr old vehicle which speaks to the low mileage. Floors are rock-solid. Seats have no rips/tears/stains. Dash is free of cracks. The weatherstripping is showing its age and the headliner (backside of convertible top) is a little saggy but has no rips. Driver seat needs adjustment on the track as it will side but will only lock in one position. Trunk is rock solid. SYSTEMS Starts up easy every time. Motor pulls strong and 5-speed manual shifts cleanly through all gears. Clutch engages halfway through pedal travel, as it should. The fuel-injection system could use an adjustment: At idle, the engine revs sometimes bounce between 600 and 1500rpm. This doesn't happen all the time and never occurs under throttle. Brakes work great, stopping in a predictable straight line. Steering is good with very slight play but she tracks straight and true even at highway speeds with no shimmy through the wheel. Speedo, Odometer, Volt meter, Oil Pressure and Oil Temp gauges all work as they should. Tach, Engine Temp and Fuel gauge work intermittently. Heater/blower works ... AC does not (likely needs a charge). There is power to the Blaupunkt radio/cassette player but we haven't been able to track down the anti-theft code so was have never used it. OVERALL This is a great, original example of VW's Mk1 Cabby. We are only selling as we have not used her much this year and we are making space in the garage for a pop-up camper. Reserve is very reasonable. Please don't ask for a "Buy It Now" ... we are looking forward to seeing the auction through to completion. This is a great opportunity to acquire a low-mileage European classic convertible at a reasonable price that you can both drive and keep as an investment. Clear MA title in hand.
