HISTORYMy great uncle first bought this car in 1971. He was LAPD, and it had been stolen off a used dealer's lot in Los Angeles, and he bought it as an insurance recovery, when they found it without the engine. He bought a used engine and transmission and had it installed. The parties that had stolen it, removed the exterior badges, removed all VINs, except for the stamp in the metal of the front trunk(pic 2) and painted over the original green, to a dark blue. This must have been a bad problem, because I even have a police training bulletin (pic 3, blue bulletin with VW outline) which the San Fran police dept put out to help ID VINs of stolen porsches and vw's. He liked the dark blue, so when the paint peeled in later years, he painted it over it again with the same dark blue. The car lived in a garage in Burbank most of it's early life. But then when they moved to Palm Springs, it sat under a tree for a little while. I heard about the car's new resting place, and talked him into letting it come to me in 2004. He told me the engine had a bad "knocking", and that it would need to be fixed.I received the car in 2004, 2 days before my twins were born. The car got pushed into my garage, and I thought I would do more work on it. I removed the engine and started the tear down, When i discovered it was beyond my abilities, I took it to a mechanic who told me the engine would cost an extraordinary amount to repair, more than I could afford so I again mothballed the project.In 2012 I trailored the car to a mechanic who replaced the front pan and did work on the front suspension, as this seems to be a bad area of rust for these cars.Then in 2013 I trailored it to Ralph's Auto in Baltimore, where I traded my old engine for a 1968 engine. Ralph's mechanic did the instal, but did not do a total rebuild. When I brought the car home, I realized the paint was peeling too bad, and I had it painted aga blue. I figure since this car is not original matching numbers, I could have it whatever color I wanted that was original to 1966. The windows, front wheel wells, and fenders were removed for the paint job, but it was not a complete tear down. Besides a few chips, the paint job is an excellent wet sand job. The aga blue looks DARK in certain light, and lighter in others. It is a great original color, as apposed to the original Irish green, which looks best on British cars.But the engine still needs additional work, and I am just finally realizing this is a project I don't have time for anymore. I have 4 kids growing up, and I seem to be spending more time with them, and not less! My oldest graduated, and I can only imagine I will want to be more around for their kids, so I have decided someone else needs a shot at this car, who really has the time. This car is a 51 year old car being sold AS IS. This is prior to Porsche using galvanized steel, but it IS in very good shape, with very little surface rust. You can tell it has very low mileage, and didn't really live on these streets in Frederick, Maryland.This is a VERY solid car. Besides the front pan being replaced it is in great shape. ****I will allow potential buyers who provide me with their state issued ID or passport to personally come and inspect the car on one of two days: June 16th from 6pm to 7pm or June 17th from 12pm to 1pm****-The passenger window regulator is derailing because one wheel has broke off. You can either repair it, or replace it with the new regulator that I purchased. Either way, I have left the door panels off so you can inspect both sides, and see how clean this car really is.-The dash CLOCK is ticking, but the hands are no longer connected.-The RADIO turns on, lights up, but something is wrong with the tuner. -The FRONT RAIL on the bumper is original. It is actually bolted directly through the weights installed in the front bumper. It was a dealer option for early years, which was a carry over from the 356.-ODOMETER says 31,000 kilometers and runs, but this is inaccurate, as it wasn't running while my uncle owned the car.-VINYL interior is in great shape. Just a small nick in the back seat and along the piping of the driver's seat where it became worn. You could probably blacken with a black Sharpee marker and no one would notice.-CHROME is marred in various places. Definite pitting on the horn grills.-HORNS do not work. When activated, you hear the clicking noise under the hood. This car does NOT have any original tool kit or pretty pedigree. But it also hasn't been molested or rusting away. This car is for anyone looking for a GREAT early car, restoration, or a wonderfully light car for classic racing. Either way, have fun!!! PS: i just realized prior to this auction i have never had the cover off the steering wheel. SO after 40 years of being covered, it still looks pretty good.
