Vehicle Detail
96 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE You are bidding on a 1988 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible. This is a no reserve auction, last bidder wins. Please, no stories about your wife’s approval, kids accidentally hit the bid button, etc. I’ve heard it all and do report non-paying bidders. I wouldn’t waste your time, please don’t waste mine. 50% of my transactions end in an excuse. It’s inconsiderate. I purchased the car, from the original female owner, last year. I’m a collector and have always liked the Saab 900. In 1978 I was enamored by Saab’s inclusion of a Turbo on their venerable 2.1 liter cylinder engine as a means of producing horsepower. Taking their lead from Porsche, they where one of the first to the market with a Turbo engine that year (US). Soon after, everyone seemed to follow suit. There is no denying the cult status of these Saabs and it’s easy to understand why. The style is – now – iconic and I might add, graceful in an unusual way. It’s like no other car on the road. All other Saab owners seem to appreciative that you are keeping one alive and on the road, as they waive and give thumbs up. That is, when you see one. They aren’t that common place any longer. In 1988 the Saab 2.1 liter engine had a 16 valve head and produced 175 horsepower. My car also has the automatic transmission, which frankly, I now prefer. Especially in a 5 passenger convertible. There is a satisfying push in the back when the turbo kicks in. The car launches forward and the turbo gauge on the dashboard swings toward the red zone. I said “satisfying” because the car Is not truly fast off the line. This is, after all, a 1998 vehicle. However, she does return a respectable xx mpg on the highway. Not bad for a great summer vehicle that can amply hold two to three adults in the rear seat (two Is optimal, of course). I particularly like the factory hard cover for the convertible once down. It’s a three-piece affair. While not particularly easy to install (a series of straps is a means of securing it) it does look great in place. I didn’t take a picture of the top in the raised position due to the effort required to reinstall the hard cover. However, I will do so upon request. The convertible top is in fine condition. Not new but very nice. In fact, the Saab 900 convertible is one car that looks good (in my opinion) with the top raised. I have sold my building where the collection of cars was stored and I am cleaning house. Hence the sale. Sinclair, suggested a convertible version to increase sales. The first prototype was built by ASC, American Sunroof Company (now American Specialty Cars). Similarly, Lynx Motors International Ltd produced two "convertible" models, just prior to the official 1986 launch. The Trollhättan design department, headed by Björn Envall, based its version on the 3-door hatchback while the Finnish plant used the sturdier 2-door version, which also looked better and was therefore selected for production. The initial production was not planned to be large but the orders kept coming in and a classic was born. The new car was shown for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in the autumn of 1983. The first prototype aroused enormous interest and in April 1984, Saab decided to put the car in production at Valmet Automotive in Finland. The production of the first 900 convertible started during the spring of 1986. The convertible usually had a 16-valve turbocharged engine, some with intercooler, but it was also offered in certain markets with a fuel-injected 2.1 L naturally aspirated engine from 1991 on. Here is some information (Wikipedia) about the engine: Saab introduced a turbocharger in 1978 in its 99 Turbo with the B engine (based on the Triumph Slant-4 engine designed for Saab by Triumph). This engine was also used in early 900 Turbo models. The B-engine was re-designed as the H engine, which was used through to 1993 (and 1994 cabriolets). The H-engine is very durable. Due to a fairly standardized engine management system, the H-engine can be easily tuned to 197 hp/147 kW; with further bolt-on modifications, to the 247 hp/184 kW range. Saab used Bosch-made mechanical K-Jetronic continuous fuel injection in the fuel injected and 8-valve turbocharged versions, and the Bosch LH 2.2, 2.4 and 2.4.2 and Lucas Automotive electronic fuel injection systems were used in the 16-valve versions. The 2.1 L I4 16-valve engine used the Bosch LH 2.4.2 EZK electronic ignition system with knock sensor. What set the 900 Turbo apart from its turbo-equipped competitors, especially in the early- and mid-1980s, was the development and use of the Automatic Performance Control (APC) boost controller. The system allowed the engine to run at the limits of engine knocking. The system had a knock sensor attached to the intake side of the motor block and if knocking of any kind was present, the APC-system would decrease the charge pressure by opening a wastegate, a bypass to the exhaust. This enabled the use of various octane fuels and also made the use of the turbocharger safer for the engine. Some 900 Aeros, Carlssons and Commemorative Editions had special APC controllers in red and black enclosures (so-called "redbox" APCs) that provided more boost and increased power to 175 hp (130 kW) or 185 hp (138 kW) without a catalytic converter. At first, Saab used a Garrett turbocharger (T3), which was oil-cooled. From 1988 through 1990, water-cooled T3s were fitted. In 1990, Saab fitted Mitsubishi TE-05 turbochargers in the SPG models only for the USA; for other countries, and for the USA from 1991, all 900 Turbos were fitted with the TE-05. Also water-cooled, the TE-05 was slightly smaller than the Garrett T3s, providing improved throttle response and quicker spool-up. The TE-05 is unique in that its exhaust inlet flange utilizes a Garrett T3 pattern. If you are reading this listing, you already know iconic nature of this car.
