Vehicle Detail
Just when you thought all the good barn finds were gone...Recently discovered in a dry Michigan barn, is this amazing, original 1967 Porsche 912 coupe. With just 108,000 miles from new (odo reads 8,351, has rolled over once, and still functions properly), the engine on this car was reportedly rebuilt approximately 4,000 miles ago, by the long term owner (a mechanic). While there still may be some sorting and additional freshening to do for optimum performance, this 912 starts right up and runs quite well! Originally Aga blue (color code 6608), this 912 was resprayed at some point, to a similar (& attractive) shade, but definitely lighter than the original (it's sort of a gun metal blue now). If one were to restore this beauty, then a return to the original hue would be in order, But I must say, the patina on this car is just fabulous. There are numerous imperfections and discolorations (most noticeable being the rear passenger quarter, where it looks as if something was spilled on the paint). There's a real honesty to the looks and life lived of this wonderful 912. And a great story to tell. This is an original 5 gauge car. The interior is in very good shape. There are no cracks in the dash, and the wood steering wheel (& dash plate) are in nice shape as well. And check out the dealer installed "Porsche A/C"! The carpets are older, but ok. The seats are non-original, and from a later (mid '70s, 2.7 era) 911. The floor pans (as evidenced in the pictures) are in excellent shape. There are even still the original dealer installed Porsche floor-mats. The lights, signals, indicators, and other major electrical components of the car are also in working order, Non operational items are the gas gauge, clock, and added oil pressure and voltage readouts. The undercarriage of the 912 looks quite good too. As the photos detail, most of the corrosion appears to be superficial in nature, and the structural integrity of the car is excellent. The battery tray area, in the front storage compartment, looks quite good as well. The 912 starts right up, with a pump of the (brand new) accelerator pedal, and runs and idles nicely (see video link below). The original Solex carburetors work very well! One thing noticeable on a test drive, it's that the pedal cluster is a little sticky (primarily the clutch pedal), and would perhaps benefit from a pedal cluster rebuild. That being said, I think some good, regular use would go a long way, as the more it's driven, the more it loosens up. The brakes seem to function well, and as intended. I do not have the COA, or confirmation that this is the original engine, but the engine code (see pic) 754297 does align with the build date & vin for what looks like a match. Put simply, while I would not recommend driving the car a long distance, without first going through all the mechanical systems, it is a car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed as it is being enhanced and freshened. In this age of 6 digit ($$$) early, long hood Porsches, the days of the plentiful, undiscovered barn finds are likely behind us. And as early 911s have risen to astronomical values, 912s are now following suit. This car will be 50 years old next year! If you've seen the February issue of Sports Car Market (SCM) magazine, there is a great profile (& rebuttal) of the barn find Porsche Speedster that Jerry Seinfeld recently bought for over half a million dollars. His (valid) point, is that these cars are only original once, and have a real story to tell of their life - much more so than an over restored car, that has been rebuilt to better than new, and consequently robbed of its history, story and character. This is your chance to get one of the last real-deal, barn find cars, at a price that's sure to look very, very cheap in very little time. Here's a link to a short video of the car running (keep in mind, the temperature outside was less than 10 degrees when video was taken!):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6IY2UmdomU I encourage all potential buyers to come inspect the car in person prior to buying or bidding, and please keep expectations realistic - this is an unrestored, 50 year old vehicle. Your bid or offer is a binding contract. Feel free to call me with any questions or for more information. Car condition is subjective. I have owned over 100 Porsches, and am picky about my cars, but potential owners should decide for themselves if this car is for them. Car is sold AS IS, WHERE IS. Transportation is ultimately the responsibility of the buyer. International bidders are welcome, but please have U.S. funds and transportation arranged prior to auction's end. Zero or negative feedback bidders please contact me prior to bidding or your bid may be cancelled. Please only bid or offer if you are serious. Finally, feel free to email or call me at 574-361-5315 with any questions, more details, or if you'd like to make an offer. Good luck!
