Vehicle Detail
1968 Ford Mustang Fastback 428 Cobra Jet C/Stock Automatic "Jr. Stock" Drag Car. This car had been raced through the 70's here in New England but we were never able to pin down much specific history on it, so we took it the extra mile and finished it to represent a period correct dealership's version of a 1968 factory lightweight Cobra Jet drag Mustang. If you weren't one of the 50 lucky recipients of the factory drag Mustangs in 1968, you could have had your local dealership build you something like this to compete. The car was originally an early production New Jersey built Highland Green C code 289 automatic Fastback with black standard interior. It was re-painted red once long ago, and you can still see the original Highland Green in the door jambs. The paint is faded with chips and cracks here and there but has a great looking old patina. We like cars that show character and this car's got it! The lettering is hand painted, not vinyl. There were faint traces of lettering visible when we got the car so we repainted what we could see and improvised the rest. Factory original "GT" style hood. The car was also originally equipped with AC and power steering, both of which have been deleted. Overall the car is in great shape for a Mustang that has never been restored. The body is very straight and solid. It has a few very small bubbles starting to come through here and there, and there is a small hole in the trunk lid under one of the stickers. The front floor pans have been replaced with non-correct panels, but otherwise the rest of the floor appears original and solid. The sub frames are solid with just a little rust beginning on the front torque boxes. There is a spot of rust on top of the front inner fenders on either side between the shock towers and firewall, and a few other spots down low within the inner fenders. The trunk is solid with only minor rust beginning at the rear corners of the trunk floor. From inside the trunk you can also see some very old patch work to the rear lower quarters. The car was very well kept it's whole life and doesn't really need to be restored in my opinion. Interior is all original including upholstery and even the carpet. The seats are excellent with no rips or tears. The headliner does have some rips and will need to be replaced. Stock steering wheel, center console, and vintage Sun Super Tach with Stewart Warner oil pressure and temp gauges. Original glass is good all around. The engine is based off a 428 Police Interceptor with 427 heads just like the original Tasca Cobra Jet and was professionally rebuilt in 2002. It runs great and has less than 1,000 miles on it. The specs are as follows:-Block: Late 60's C6ME-A 428 Police Interceptor bored .030 over (4.160" bore)-Crank/Rods: Stock 428 3.98" stroke-Pistons: TRW Forged 10.5:1-Rings: Sealed Power Moly-Heads: C3AE-D 1963 427 Low Riser-Valves: Stainless Steel 2.09" Intake/1.66" Exhaust (Cobra Jet size)-Rocker Arms: Adjustable Factory Style w/ Aluminum Spacers-Cam: Reed "Custom Grind" Solid Lifter Flat Tappet, Lift: .565" Intake/.570" Exhaust, 108 Lobe Separation, Duration @ .050: 233 Intake/238 Exhaust-Timing Chain: Ford Motorsport Double Roller-Distributer: 428 Police Interceptor-Oil Pump: High Volume with Remote Filter-Oil Pan: Stock Steel with Extra Capacity Sump & Windage Tray-Intake: Factory 428 Police Interceptor Aluminum-Carburetor: Proform 850cfm Mech. Secondary-Valve Covers: Factory 1969 Cobra Jet Finned Aluminum-Headers: Doug's "Super Stock" Cobra Jet Drag, Ceramic Coated Transmission is a C6 Automatic that was recently professionally rebuilt with high performance bands/clutches and a shift kit. New TCI 2500 RPM converter. New heavy duty driveshaft with yokes. Rear end is a Ford 8" currently running highway gears. Very easy on the motor and very street/highway friendly. Front wheels are 15x4.5" Cragar S/S mounted on Moroso 7.10-15 drag front runners, rear wheels are 14x6" chrome reverse with rare vintage Cragar center caps mounted on M&H Racemaster 8.00/8.50-14 Super Stock cheater slicks. Front end has been raised with coil spring jacks, and the factory power steering has been deleted. New 1" front sway bar added. Radiator is a large aftermarket aluminum unit. Gas tank was replaced within the last 10 years. This is a fantastic looking car that gets tons of attention everywhere it goes. It runs, sounds, and stops great, and has been driven to several car shows and cruises. It's been a great street car the way it is currently set up, and with a good set of gears will be a very fast car on the strip! You just don't see Mustangs quite like this one. Car is sold on a Connecticut bill of sale only, there is no title. The car is currently registered in the state of Connecticut, and being that Connecticut is a "no title" state, some other states will grant a title with previous proof of CT registration. Additionally there are several antique car titling companies that will provide a title if needed. The car can be seen by appointment at our shop in Haddam, CT, and is available for sale locally. We reserve the right to end the auction early providing the reserve has not yet been met. Feel free to email, or call Greg or Dean at 860-345-2100 days, 860-873-1092 evenings.
