Vehicle Detail
1966 Pontiac Catalina Convertible This would be an awesome winter project for the guy who wants to get ready to hang out at the local car shows next summer with a cool mid-60's classic convertible. I purchased this sweet old Cat drop top in the spring from a guy in his 80's that had it sitting in his barn in upstate Wisconsin since 1980. He said he drove it in the barn way back then, and the mileage is correct at just over 95K. I don't know much about these old Catalina's, but this one happened to come from the village where I grew up. I thought is was very ironic to see the Peter Epsteen Pontiac decal on the trunk proving it still has the original paint. That was the local Pontiac dealership in the Village of Skokie, Illinois. Chances are this car was actually around my home town on the showroom floor in 1966 while I was growing up. I always wanted one since my younger brother was born in that year. I just don't have the time for the proper restoration this car needs to be brought back to its former glory. This car will need a new convertible top, but the frame is folded down into the well. The original top frame is complete and in tact including the hydraulic lines, top cylinders, and the top motor. The interior looks in decent shape as shown in the pictures with a new set of four Burgundy carpeted floor mats to match the interior. It will need a new windshield as the original one was missing. I simply placed a random windshield I had laying around in place, so when I have the car covered it would protect the interior. There is an old school Alpine AM/FM Cassette player mounted in the dash, but I have no idea if it works. The older gentleman said that he did start this Cat up every year for the first 10 or 15 years that it was in his barn, but he misplaced the keys a decade or two ago. I don't know much about Pontiac's, so I don't know if the engine is a 389 or a 421. He said it is a 389, and it is the original numbers matching engine. When I first got the car I bought and installed new spark plugs and a new distributor cap and rotor. I left the points in the glove box, because I never learned how to adjust points. I had every intention of starting the engine, although since I didn't get the keys with the sale I did buy a new ignition switch, but never got around to installing it. That is also in the glove box. Installing the ignition switch and getting this old Cat running again will be left up to the winning bidder. I didn't see any evidence of this car ever being in any bad accidents other than the damage on the right rear. I do believe this car can be brought back to life or used for the awesome valuable classic parts. All the stainless steel trim looks in good condition. I didn't see any dents on them, but the right rear quarter molding is long gone. I never got into the trunk, so a new lock will be needed for the trunk. The lock cylinder was taken out of the glove box by the old guy and is in a plastic bag in the glove compartment. He thought he could get a key cut from that cylinder for the ignition, but he never had one made. This car is being sold as needing a complete restoration where every part will need attention to make it a nice car again. I did put a nice set of four Michelin Road Handler Plus white wall steel belted radial tires on this classic Pontiac, because the original tires were dry rotted. This body has mostly all of its original paint except for where some white primer was sprayed over several areas to protect the body from rust. In my opinion this undercarriage is in amazingly nice condition for a car being almost 50 years old. I stuck the camera under the car and snapped a couple pictures of the front floor pans to show how well this undercarriage has held up over almost a half of century. This Pontiac still has the full set of four hard to find PMD spinner hubcaps. This Cat is being sold with an open, clean, and clear Illinois title dated October 19th 1979. It was nice to see an old classic title again. The last time this car was register was October of 1980, so it has been off the road for over 35 years. I have a picture of the last known registered license plate and the title at the end of the picture display. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide that anyone can look up on-line has the 1966 Pontiac Catalina Convertible valued at $33,900 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $19,700 in average condition, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! They have the lowest condition value at $10,700 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car. The numbers don't lie! This 1966 Catalina Convertible is a very valuable automobile when restored properly! These full-size Pontiac convertible's have consistently shown to escalate in value with each quarter. What you see is exactly what you get! This is an investment that I believe will continue to rise. I tried to describe all of the pertinent information, so any potential bidder can make the most informed decision possible before placing their bid. I am a brutally honest person, so if there is anything else you feel I may have missed, please ask me any question you like. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty.
