Vehicle Detail
First and most importantly, this is my car and I am a private owner. I have also been on ebay since 2001, and have always had 100% feedback. This is a true auction, so a few upfront requests:Please ask any questions before bidding; Please be certain your wife, husband, significant other, pet...whomever.... is an agreement with your purchase BEFORE you bid; Please have your finances in order before bidding; Please do not snype this auction, as I sometimes decide to end an auction early in advance of the final time, and sell to the highest bidder (You may well miss the opportunity to purchase); andPlease do not check my reserve and cancel your bid... if you do so I absolutely will report to ebay AND you may miss the car anyway, as I sometimes decide to end an auction early in advance of the final time, and sell to the highest bidder (You may well miss the opportunity to purchase).Ultimately, these items are only fair to me and your fellow ebay participants. Rare and wonderful USA model Mercedes 2.3-16A bunch of very detailed, high res pictures here: 190e2316.shutterfly.com A ride along video can be found here: youtube.com/watch?v=rgbO4Inxmm8 A walk around video can be found here: youtube.com/watch?v=nzEoX7QOhcYThe w201 2.3-16 is the car that MB used to homologate the w201 for DTM racing. The 2.3-16 is legendary for:It's design in conjunction with the experts at Cosworth;dominating DTM racing;causing BMW to get frustrated and create the (first) e30 M3;allowing Ayrton Senna to get noticed (my car has removable, vinyl decals to match the Senna car that is in the famous Nurburgring museum);A few details about my car:Smoke silver;5 speed manual (good ole factory dogleg);USA model;all books and keys from new (!);at least 1" stack of records in a binder, along with stamped original maintenance book;115k well maintained and cared for miles (my car could easily pass for 1/2 that mileage)runs and drives like it should...awesome!everything works down to the factory lap timer, cruise control (!), etc. with the few minor exceptions noted below;wonderful condition (see pictures I have of not just the top side, but also the bottom side :) ) The end result is these cars are becoming super collectible. Just have a look at the BMW e30 M3 and rapid price rise for an example. Then try to find an w201 2.3-16 like this one at this price!Amongst the one inch stack of records, reflecting history and things such as the following within the past 10K miles:battery;clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing;shifter bushings and shifter rebuilt, including new leather cover;suspension;control arms and various bushings;valve cover gasket;radiator and hoses replaced (OEM);front and rear brakes and rotors, and Goodridge braided lines;Full tune up, right down to the distributor cap, rotor and wires. Modifications List:- REMOVABLE Vinyl decals in homage to the factory car that made Ayrton Senna famous....that car looks identical and sits in the Nurburgring Museum which you can check with a quick search; - euro front headlight conversion (i have original side markers too);- Problematic SLS Bag suspension deleted with proper pump delete plate at cam cover (the original rear struts come with the car);- Swapped to Bilsteins and E400 springs, one inch higher in the rear;-Cats and Resonators deleted. Aftermarket muffler behind and factory header remains. Car announces its presence, but not at all offensive and especially quiet at idle;-Stoptech Rotors with EBC "Red Stuff" pads installed front and rear;-Stock wheels (15x7) with Toyo Proxxes R1s. A very serious tire (included with car if reserve is met);-Evo I wheels (16x8) currently installed. with excellent condition Dunlop Direzzas on them; and-Camber Plates, from Poland, I believe it was -3 degrees in the front, -2.5 in the rear. The car handles better than you can ever imagine! The driveThe car drives, stops and pulls and accelerates with conviction and authority. The brakes are new and the car stops without any pulsing, squeal, fade or wobble. The tires and suspension work as new, and the car goes around turns as though it is on rails (I know it's an oft-used expression, but this car truly deserves same).Even though the car has a 4 cylinder, it will surprise you when it "climbs on the cams". It pulls hard and revs evenly through the rev band (watch the video... up a steep hill!). Set the cruise control and take a long ride if you want too. It's awesome. No idiot lights are on. The car that was one of the first in the US with airbag and ABS still retains those as fully functional, along with the factory gauges and lap timer :) IssuesI believe in full candor. So rather than just say everything works, here is the quite limited list of issues with this car:a few straight line stereo-typical dash top splits (oddly enough, very minor in my car's case);A few cracks in some of the dash flat panels (see pics);A/C just stopped working. Recently upgraded, I believe it may be a dash servo issue based upon the way it stopped;car was parked under an apple tree at one point. It has a few very minor dimples that dont show in pics. I was going to have a dent-magician remove them, but in the end, never bothered because it's kind of minor;typical rear seat back seam split, which is repairable;one very minor surface bubble at driver side front Cossie flare;driver side front door door card a bit messed up right at the very top (black tape over it).a note on CarFax about an accident.... The wonder of CarFax, it was a fender bender!..I have the insurance history report, including a $176 claim.Overall, this is just a wonderful example that is true to what made 190e 2.3-16 legendary. These cars have been appreciating in value, and this car is a fine example of why that will continue. On Oct-05-15 at 02:34:58 PDT, seller added the following information: A couple additions in response to questions:A) yes I have the original radio. There is currently a modern head unit installed, employing the factory speakers. The original Becker unit as in the shutterfly pictures is included. B)I have the knee bolster and mounting equipment that goes under the drivers side lower dash. Removed for a bit more leg room, this is included with the sale. C) The pictures show the issues that I have described under the condition section. D) if you are a real buyer, I am happy to discuss at 203 nine one five nine zero zero five. Good luck bidding!AndyOn Oct-08-15 at 11:27:42 PDT, seller added the following information: **************************** 10/8/15 Update ******************************************* A few items of interest and updates:At this point, the car has received over 3300 views, and 197 "watchers";I have received outright purchase offers above the bidding and quite close to my reserve, so I am considering removal of the reserve. If you are considering the car, you should thus seriously consider bidding now;I fully expect that the car will sell based upon interest and prices I have seen; and The car was Wednesday featured on "bring a trailer". A few cynics have criticized the decals. Again these are removable, but my son provides some wonderful context explaining the basis for the tribute .... Ultimately, it's a choice for you, the buyer, to easily make.In 1985, as the 190e Cosworth was being released, Mercedes held a publicity race on a new iteration of the Nurburgring consisting entirely of bone-stock, street-ready 190e 2.3-16's (the sole additions were a rollcage and the decals stating the driver's name and number; the radio, clock, interior, and other luxuries were all still in-tact). A host of huge names were in attendance, including James Hunt, Nikki Lauda, Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, Alain Prost, Stirling Moss, and more- a very solid pack. However. a few days prior to the event, one driver was forced to drop out, leaving an opening. Mercedes elected to choose a young Brazilian driver by the name of Ayrton Senna, fresh off of a karting championship win, and flew him in for the event. The next day he was running door-to-door with Prost for first after battling his way to the front in a car identical to this one (decals done exactly to spec), and eventually netted the win. Manufacturers took note of this talented no-name, and the rest is history. There is thus quite a legacy and history behind the combination of the livery and paint scheme. Obviously the buyer of my car would be expected and encouraged to make the car the way they want it to be, I just figured I'd share this legacy that birthed a hero of a driver. Additionally, if you are not familiar with the gestation of these cars....These cars had incredible history, originally built for Gruppe B in a $25million project by the Mercedes Motorsport division, but were axed by Mercedes in anger when the UrQuattro changed rally forever by introducing all-wheel drive just before the Cossie hit the dirt. AMG engineers secretly continued development for the DTM series, realizing the potential of the car. Upon testing after its completion, the Cosworth broke 9 speed records, and reigned king on the DTM circuit for years, until BMW became jealous and made the M3. And with a story like that, who wouldn't want one?
