Vehicle Detail
Up for a sale is my beloved 2001 Mercedes-Benz CLK430. I purchased this vehicle in July 2006 with 68,000 miles. It has never been in an accident, nor had any major issues. This particular CLK430 is fully-loaded with every single option available for this model year, except for parking sensors. Leather seats are also in great condition with minimal wear. I guarantee you will NOT find another Mercedes CLK in this excellent condition with such low miles!!! Options include:AMG body kit for CLK430Xenon headlights with headlamp washersRain-sensing windshield wiperHeated leather seatsPower rear window shadeAuto-dimming and heated side and rearview mirrorsGPS Navigation (with CD of Midwest maps)Bose HiFi audio system with 3.5mm auxiliary plugCD Changer in trunkPower tilting and sliding sunroofAftermarket tinted rear windows In addition to the vehicle options, I'm including a set of Enkei Racing PF01 18" rims with Kumho Ecsta XS 224/40ZR18 summer tires and spacers. Rims are worth $1,000 alone without tires!! A set of these rims without tires just sold on eBay for $700. These tires currently sell for $178.59 each from TireRack, bringing the total price for these rims and tires to $1702.36!! Rims are in excellent shape with only one rim having minor abrasion on its surface. Tires are also in excellent condition with plenty of tread left. Winter Bridgestone Blizzak tires are mounted on genuine Mercedes AMG rims (from the 2005 W209 CLK model). Winter rims are in poor condition, but hold air. One has a minor crack (please see pictures). Winter tires also have plenty of tread left and are essential for winter driving!! To the best of my recollection, here's the good:Full tune-up was performed around 100k miles, including new spark plugs, wires and coils. Valve cover gasket material was also replaced.Fuel filter replaced around 90k miles.Passenger seat frame with motors were replaced around 70k miles.Mass Air Flow sensor replaced around 70k miles.Motor mounts were replaced around 90k miles.Front wheel bearings were replaced around 90k. Inspected, repacked with grease and re-torqued around 105k.New front brake pads and new rear brake pads and rotors around 105k miles. Front rotors were replaced around 85k.Hood was repainted (because of typical damage from pebbles on highway) around 100k miles. Rear wheel wells were also repainted (because of minor rust) around 110k.Replaced GPS antenna housing on roof due to rubber cracking around 90k.Crankshaft Position Sensor replaced around 100k miles.Gas cap replaced last winter.Replaced AC expansion valve a few weeks ago.Regular, annual oil changes and only filled with premium gas.Enkei rims and Kumho tires were purchased last summer.Comes with 2 keys.New OEM windshield professionally installed last summer.Fully detailed and cleaned last month. Carpet was shampooed and there are no smells. Backseat was rarely used, so it looks new!Vehicle has been kept in a garage its whole life until about a month ago. Will include any spare parts I have, which includes: lug nuts, light bulbs (including one for the dash), oil filter, genuine MB touchup paint, etc. Now, in the interest of full-disclosure, for the bad:Air conditioning compressor has a small leak. Unsure of how long it will keep Freon in. How do I know this is the issue? I had a full AC diagnostics test done a few summers ago with the original compressor installed and the only leak that was detected was from the compressor shaft seal. I replaced the compressor with a refurbished one, along with a new dryer. It lasted for about a year before slowly leaking again. I started the repair and have already replaced the AC expansion valve and dryer, but ran out of time and money. I have Freon and can refill the AC for the buyer on the day of the sale. Will also include a new gasket kit. Cost of repair: ~$200 for new Denso compressor + labor.TeleAid activates randomly because of a low alarm battery, which causes the trunk to open when engine is running and gear is in Park. While driving, it just disables the radio for a few minutes. The old battery completely burnt out and I replaced this with a used eBay battery, which only lasted about a year. TeleAid can also be disabled by a dealership or mechanic with a Star Diagnostics computer to prevent any issues in the future. TeleAid operates on an outdated analog TDMA cellular frequency, which is unusable anyways. Issue could just be due to the vehicle being in storage for the last few years and the battery discharging, since I drove the vehicle an entire day without TeleAid activating recently. On another occasion, it activated every 15 minutes or so. I checked all contacts for corrosion and there was none, so it leads me to believe that the battery needs to be replaced with a brand new one. Cost of repair: ~$80 for new battery or service visit to disable TeleAid.Due to the vehicle not being driven much in the last few years, the main battery should be replaced also. Battery was last replaced around 3 or 4 years ago, which means it's about time for a new battery anyways. Cost of repair: $130 for new battery.Exhaust heat shield has come loose from mounting bolt, resulting in a slightly audible vibration at idle. Unsure of cost, but would only require unscrewing a screw and placing a washer underneath it. Issue has been present since I bought the car.Car needs to be driven. It has been sitting for the past few years while I've been attending school in New York City. This means the batteries have discharged (as mentioned) and some light buildup has collected on the fuel tank level sensors from stale gas (producing an occasional incorrect reading around the halfway point where the old gas was filled to). Mercedes forums detail this issue and multiple users confirm that about 2 full tanks of Chevron Techron fuel treatment will fix this. I went through a tank of Techron already and haven't noticed the issue, but I also haven't been driving the vehicle consistently.Driver heated seat bottom section no longer works. Heated rear backrest works well. One bulb in dashboard has burnt out, which is why the LCD looks a little darker on the right half of where it indicates the mileage of the vehicle. Also, side marker light on front passenger side goes out (resulting in a bulb out warning light), but comes back on when housing is lightly tapped. Dash bulb will be provided. Not sure if I have a side marker light, but this is an easy fix.Lock assembly on trunk is frozen and will not accept key. It's also been like this since I bought the car.One of the four mounting studs for the license plate on the trunk spins freely. Can still install a screw in this stud as long as lock is removed and the stud is held while it is screwed in, which takes an extra 5 minutes to install the plate. What else should you be aware of?? If you wanted the vehicle in perfect condition, I would recommend the following, but these are only recommendations and not immediately required:Steering rack and alignment: ~$250 (quote from Benztek)Change transmission fluid: $350 (quote from Benztek)Change differential fluid: ~$30 + laborRadiator fan: $60-200 + labor (depending on source of replacement)Undercarriage rust removal: Unsure of costInjectors: $75.74 per injector + labor Overall, you're getting an excellent vehicle with most common maintenance parts, such as tires and brakes, having lots of wear left on them. I'm fully disclosing everything because that's the way I expect to do business with others. I have seen other CLK430s listed on here and sellers have tried to hide issues or have included a vague, general description. All of the issues I've listed are typical CLK430 issues you can read about in the Mercedes repair forums (BenzWorld or MBworld). If you're looking at another Mercedes CLK, expect to encounter these problems. My car is listed for a fair selling price with a full pre-inspection and repair history disclosed. Why am I selling this? Simply because I've had this car for around a decade and wanted something new, so I recently purchased a car in MUCH worse condition and have spent all summer repairing it. I've now run out of time, because I'm preparing for job interviews and heading back to school in New York City, and money, because I've spent it all on the car I've been repairing. If I'd have the time and money to repair this car, I would list it for ~$5k. Since I've disclosed all issues and will not be repairing them, I'm listing the car for much cheaper. As they say, "My loss is your gain!" NOTE: Please do NOT email me with lowball offers. Price is set at Fair Market Value. I am not a store, only a Columbia University student and Army veteran selling my own personal items. I have done my best to disclose all defects and list this vehicle as accurately as possible. Vehicle is provided AS-IS with no implied nor expressed warranty. Buyer is responsible for all taxes, title, insurance and any additional fees required by their state of residence.
