The character of BMW's 335is is decidedly different from that of the 335i. It starts with the older but more potent N54 twin-turbocharged inline-6 powerplant (the standard 2011 335i is equipped with a single twin-scroll turbo). Power is increased thanks to direct injection and VANOS, BMW's name for variable valve timing, on both the intake and exhaust cams. With these technologies, engineers were able to raise the compression ratio to a rompingly high 10.2:1.
To combat heat during track driving,
the "is" is fitted with a
heavy-duty radiator fan and two extra heat exchangers.
One, an engine oil cooler,
and the other, a secondary coolant radiator. They are located
ahead of each front wheel. This necessitated a new M3-esque front fascia with larger air openings.
A performance-oriented tune adds launch control to cars equipped with the dual-clutch transmission, and both it and the 6-speed manual-equipped version receive an overboost function that will temporarily raise torque from 332 lb.-ft. to 370. Full throttle runs sound especially choice thanks to a revised, high-flow exhaust system.
Along with these mechanical changes, the 335is is equipped with a smattering of "M" parts, such as the steering wheel, seats, shift knob and pedals.
Driving the car, you quickly notice the added power and throatiness of the exhaust.
Steering is heavy, but becomes transparent when driven through a favorite set of turns.

Safety
Every 2012 BMW 3 Series comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. The convertible lacks the side curtains, but the regular front side airbags extend up to head level and there are also pop-up rollover hoops. The stability control system integrates several features designed to improve braking performance, such as periodically wiping the brake rotors dry when the windshield wipers are in use and automatically snugging the pads to the rotors when the driver abruptly lifts off the throttle. BMW Assist emergency communications is optional.
