Vehicle Detail
The car: I’m selling a partially restored 1958 MGA. Car is a Texas car, built in 1957, and has a 1500 cc engine with 4 speed transmission. Overall, this is a great car, ready for someone to finish up the mechanicals and interior since the body and frame are done. I bought the car from an older gentleman in the neighboring town who was considering stuffing a small block and had begun the teardown. I bought it when I thought I was destined to never become a father, and this was going to be my pride and joy. Well, since unexpectedly and happily becoming a father, I’ve found it almost impossible to spend quality time with the car. Time to pass her on to someone else and put my LBC project days on hold for a while J Car has a clear Texas Title with the correct VIN- no monkey business on this one. HDL4340649. Pictures: I’ve uploaded 24 to ebay. I realize that’s nowhere near enough, so— I’ve posted almost 300 current pictures I took from every conceivable angle here: https://plus.google.com/photos/110849703883316706187/albums/6151520808209560833?authkey=CKfB5ajQroaPdQ … and I’ve posted some pictures taken during the body/frame restoration that were taken 4-5 years ago https://plus.google.com/photos/110849703883316706187/albums/6151524309111811649?authkey=CPr8-Z-tktKjuwE I haven’t edited the pics- you will see in some a dark smudge in the exact same spot- unfortunately one of my lens had a dust fleck on it. Engines: 3 come with the car. I have original engine, disassembled, all parts. 15GB-U-H 30656 engine code. In the pictures posted on google plus, you’ll see the individual pistons, the head, the block, cam, crank, clutch assembly, valves, etc- all well used and original. Would take some work to rebuild this engine but it’s great to have the original, complete with engine plate. I have a replacement, correct MGA engine, complete, rebuilt, and assembled, that I bought from a machinist on ebay in 2012. Engine code 15GB-U-H 50329. At the time Paul Moreau was quite active selling rebuilt heads and engines for MGAs and MGBs, with very high seller ratings, and this one has hardened seats and had the valve job redone on top of the bottom rebuild. Unfortunately/fortunately this is right when fatherhood got crazy and so I didn’t immediately get the engine mounted and all lubed up. I did keep mystery oil in the cylinders, and turned the engine over by hand regularly, but think it would be a good idea to remove the head to see if the cylinders need to be lapped, and suggest pulling the pan to check the main bearings too before permanently installing. Paul kept the tolerances tight, so it may just need to be broken it. Engine turns over freely but not as smoothly as the engine below, making me think lapping may be the ticket. Finally, I have an engine the prior owner was going to transplant after giving up on his American powered dreams. It is from the right block and head casts, and to the untrained eye looks like a proper MGA motor, but is in fact a Nash Metropolitan engine. This engine does not accommodate a mechanical tach (as opposed to what MGA engines have) and is code 15F-N-H 5474 and could be dropped into the A without anyone being the wiser- I have an electric tach included in the sale too if you want to down this route. Engine turns over freely. Transmission: Transmission was gone over with a fine tooth comb by Ron Shimek’s shop in Austin. He’s a british car nut, and has taken great care of my MGB and MGA needs. He replaced everything that had wear, and all the seals, etc to the tune of ~$1000, and that was my club member price. Should be bulletproof. Other hardware: In addition to all of the new hardware from Clarke’s spares, Moss, and Victoria British, I also amassed a spare collection. 2 sets of carbs for rebuild 2 rear engine plates, so you could machine the extra one and mount an MGB 1800 if you wanted to, following MGAGuru’s advice http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/power/pp201.htm 3 extra heads- an extra 1500 with valves, an 1800 bare head, and the original 1500 head. Some folks choose to transplant an 1800 head on the 1500 engine to help with breathing. 2 generators 2 starters- Ron’s place tested one to make sure it was good to go 2 radiators 3 Fuse boxes 1 heater core Hand starter Extra flywheel A list of all the moss parts are below as well (new wiring harness, leather upholstery, carpet, etcParts and prices are also in the picture gallery at https://plus.google.com/photos/110849703883316706187/albums/6151520808209560833?authkey=CKfB5ajQroaPdQ And more in the pics! Restoration process: Ray Boone at http://www.karsofleander.com/ is where I did the bodywork. You’ll see the MGA in paint on the homepage. I was able to work on the body and also have his professionals work on the more skilled areas, all under Ray’s watchful eye. Ray owned and ran Ray Boone Enterprises in the 70’s and 80’s making parts for Harleys in Taiwan, and he made sure his guys did good work. See the pics of all of the stripping, welding, filling, blocking, priming, blocking, priming, blocking, priming…. And finally painting. The frame has been gone over and has a fresh paint job of POR15 chassis black, stuff is hard as nails. Also, I had Ray paint the inner fenders and the underside of the body with paint that had ceramic and a hardener added to make it extremely chip resistant. I also have fresh floorboards to install and the proper fasteners from clarke’s spares to use when I install. To Do: It’s not all puppies and rainbows- there is work to be done. Some paint touchup may be necessary depending on your level of perfection required- see the 300 pictures for the good, real good, and closeups of potential problem areas. The interior needs to be applied, the seats need to be reassembled and upholstered, wiring harness ran, dash rebuilt/reassembled, bumpers rechromed, etc. Good thing is the deluxe carpet and leather interior has already been purchased in red. Also have a spare grey carpet set too. 1958 means drums all around. (Car was built October 1957). Set of wheel cylinders are included too. Wire wheels with knockoffs and could use paint or chroming. Dash gauges need to be restored. New gas tank is needed. One of the two radiators should be re-cored. I’ve purchased over $4400 in parts just from moss alone that come with the car. Some are already in the car (replacement panels, bolts, etc) but most are still in boxes and I’ve taken pics of them that you’ll see in the big picture link: https://plus.google.com/photos/110849703883316706187/albums/6151520808209560833?authkey=CKfB5ajQroaPdQ My starting price is less than the cost of the parts, the transmission work, and the replacement engine- forgetting the original cost of acquiring the car or labor on the bodywork J I’d like to find a good home for her who will appreciate a nice British sports car and get her back on the road! Pickup will be from Leander, Texas which is just outside of Austin, Texas, and will need to be done in person. A 16 foot flatbed and suburban or pickup should be able to get everything in one trip. Send me an email with your contact info and I’ll either email with you or call you and we can discuss details while the auction is ongoing- if you want to come view before the auction closes, that will work. Additional: MGA guru is awesome and a great resource. I contributed a bit to Barney’s site on the car plate discussion- I’m “Chris from Austin” and pictured is this car’s plate. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/restore/rt107.htm Partial Moss Purchase list that you get (some of which are already assembled, others in boxes): 321-905 BOLT & WASHER SET, rear fenders 456-965 FENDER WASHER, upper 321-948 BOLT & WASHER SET, front valance mounting 321-948 FRONT VALANCE BOLT & WASHER SET 324-155 FENDER WASHER, round 280-808 SPLASH PLATE SEAL SET 313-305 FENDER WASHER, small rectangular 456-965 FENDER WASHER, large oblong 313-305 FENDER WASHER, small rectangular 321-948 FRONT VALANCE BOLT & WASHER SET 321-948 BOLT & WASHER SET, front valance mounting 456-965 FENDER WASHER, upper 324-155 FENDER WASHER, round 456-965 FENDER WASHER, large oblong 280-808 SPLASH PLATE SEAL SET 321-905 BOLT & WASHER SET, rear fenders 356-170 WIRING HARNESS, fabric bound, PVC wires 120-800 OIL SEAL, pinion 120-900 OIL SEAL 296-100 GASKET, rear hub 456-965 FENDER WASHER, upper 171-400 PLUG, sealed beam with grommet & pigtail 456-965 FENDER WASHER, large oblong 183-048 Brake Pipe Set 121-400 O-RING 296-200 GASKET 470-480 TAPPING PLATE 470-490 TAPPING PLATE, securing door buffers 470-540 STRIKER PLATE 408-890 TAPPING PLATE, door hinge 323-080 SCREW, tapping plate 470-510 PACKING SHIM 323-260 SCREW, hinge and striker plate 472-455 SHIM 453-098 FINISHER STRIP, sill bottom (pair) 280-714 TRUNK SEAL 470-560 CABLE, door pull 180-638 Wheel Cylinder Set (Set of 6) — 4 Front, 2 Rear 640-470 BACKBOARD 190-040 RING GEAR 641-925 CUSHION, L/H seat bottom, uncovered 330-200 BUSHING, in lever 297-500 GASKET, gearbox plate 321-878 SEAT SLIDE INSTALLATION KIT 387-250 Clutch Alignment Tool 281-848 GROMMET SET, complete (52 pieces) 641-935 CUSHION, R/H seat bottom, uncovered 190-140 CLUTCH DISC, new, 10 splines 242-715 MAIN CARPET KIT, red 246-048 COMBINATION KIT, red with red piping 640-460 PAD, seat back (rubberized horsehair) 296-000 GASKET, front plate 332-070 CABLE, ground engine to frame No warranties apply to this auction. Happy bidding! - Waxman, ebay account established 16 years ago Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE On May-25-15 at 14:18:46 PDT, seller added the following information: I strongly, strongly suggest in-person pickup. As noted, all shipping costs are at the buyer's expense. As the car is not completely assembled, there will be boxes, engines, transmission, radiators, etc to go with the car. Everything you see in the pictures. The small parts have been put in boxes to make packing manageable. As noted earlier, I think a flatbed plus a pick-up or SUV should be able to handle in one load. If you choose to use a shipping service, I'm sure their palleting + shipping costs will be higher than the normal cost to pick up a fully assembled car. On May-27-15 at 15:27:34 PDT, seller added the following information: Hi All- received a few questions that I want to update you on. #1- Do I have the top convertible frame? Yes I do have the top frame. Somehow missed uploading those pictures, sorry! Now uploaded to the main picture site, at the end. https://plus.google.com/photos/110849703883316706187/albums/6151520808209560833?authkey=CKfB5ajQroaPdQ Fabric is old and has some rips, doubtful for rehab. #2- Any parts I'm aware of that are missing? The safest, most conservative thing I can say is that if you don't see it in the pics, I don't have it. That way if I've missed something there are no hurt feelings. Items you will have to buy - gas tank for sure (it was too far gone w/rust), likely some bolts/nuts that will be needed, although I kept all of the old fasteners if you want to reuse (pictures of buckets of bolts posted). I'd invest in a new fuel pump- don't remember seeing the original when I unpacked, the top fabric too. I'm sure there will be other things but I tried to be as thorough with the pictures as possible. If you have a specific part, please ask and I will do my best to look and will let you know. But again, please default to my statement above- if you don't see it in the pics, I don't have it. #3- Can I help load? Absolutely! Most difficult will be the engines- I have a dolly and pallet jack but not an engine hoist. One engine is on a rolling frame so rolling it up a ramp isn't too hard. the bare block is heavy but doable on my dolly and a ramp. The engine on the pallet may take some sweat but we can do it. If you've got a tommy lift tailgate all this will be easy. So as long as you don't show up with a 8x5 enclosed trailer and expect to fit everything in it, we'll be ok. Also don't expect me to load everything by myself- this auction is for the physical car and items, not my manual labor. The labor is free but within reason and at my discretion.
