Vehicle Detail

1992 BMW 318iC Convertible – VIN WBABA7315NEJ13176 For your consideration is my little party of a 1992 BMW E30 318iC Convertible – one of the most sought-after of the venerable E30 3-series due to its class-leading handling, ease of maintenance, and just all-around fun – not to mention the peppy M42 motor known in Bimmer circles as the mini M3 motor. Wearing approximately 240,000 miles (stopped last summer), I bought this car as a fun weekend runabout. As a freelance automotive journalist, I’m now on to my next project. I am also thinning the herd. I have 3 keys, the original owner’s manual, and even two maintenance and repair manuals along with a pretty big crate full of assorted spare parts and filters and things. In the last 500 miles I have completed a few small jobs: 1) installed a Dinan performance chip (good for about a 20hp increase, and the original conveys) and 2) an oil and filter change – along with installing new floor mats and a couple of other trim bits here and there. The tires have plenty of tread and the convertible top is in very good condition with no rips or holes, and the rear window is remarkably clear. On the inside, this car is in good condition with three typical cracks on the top of the dash, some cracking on the driver’s side bolster (but no rips through to the padding) and a couple of cracks on the top of the rear seat (again not torn through to the padding). The original radio/cassette, heater, seat heaters (!), and power windows all work as they should, although typical for a German car of this vintage the AC does not. I have not checked-into why. The car passed the stringent Virginia safety and emissions inspections over the summer. The power locks function properly, although the key must be used in either the trunk or the passenger door as the driver’s door cylinder (which DOES turn) appears to be disconnected and I have frankly been too lazy to put it back. Outside, the car is remarkably straight especially considering its age and mileage! The only bit of rust apart from a few surface spots resulting from rock chips is a spot on the front of the driver’s side rear wheel well. The relatively rare cashmere beige metallic paint is faded around the car, likely due to it have coming from the South. The doors shut perfectly, all of the lenses are in good, clear condition. The alloy wheels are all present and straight, and there is a good spare tire is in the trunk, along with the factory jack and most of the original tool kit. The motor starts easily and settles to a very smooth idle. The power steering functions properly, and the 5-speed transmission shifts as smoothly as any E30 I’ve driven (have owned 3 and driven many more!). There are no odd noises or whines from the driveline. The clutch takes-up properly and the car does not smoke irregularly. The brakes are firm and do not pull. The Dinan chip gives the car a little more grunt than stock – especially above 4500rpm – but it is certainly not intrusive and again the original part conveys for a new owner who may wish to put it back to original. Please keep in mind that this is not a new vehicle and that it is sold as-is, where-is with no warrantees implied, stated, or otherwise intended. You are bidding to own this vehicle, not to come and look at it after the auction has ended. I encourage bidders to come and see the car if possible. Remember, my descriptions are based on my knowledge of the car. I cannot say that it is without flaws. I don't care what classic car you are looking at, it will have flaws. A non-refundable deposit of $500 must be sent by PayPal within 24 hours of the conclusion of the auction. The balance must be paid within seven days of the end of the auction or upon pick-up of the car, whichever is earlier. The balance of the purchase price may NOT be made by PayPal. I will accept cash, bank wire transfer, or cashier's check only. Purchaser is responsible for pick-up or all costs related to the shipping of the car. PLEASE BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR BID. IF YOU HAVE ZERO OR NEGATIVE FEEDBACK, YOU MUST CONTACT ME THROUGH EBAY PRIOR TO BIDDING. I WILL CANCEL YOUR BID IF YOU DO NOT. DO NOT BID ON THE CAR UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO PURCHASE IT AS YOU ARE ENTERING INTO A BINDING AGREEMENT. IF YOU FAIL TO COME AND SEE THE CAR OR HAVE IT INSPECTED BY YOUR AGENT, I WILL NOT ENTERTAIN YOU CANCELLING THE SALE FOR ANY REASON ONCE THE AUCTION HAS ENDED. I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO END THIS AUCTION EARLY. I WILL ENTERTAIN SERIOUS OFFERS TO END THE AUCTION EARLY.
