Vehicle Detail
1991 was the last year the Vanagon was made. It has very low mileage for its age. It has been our family's daily driver for over seven years and has taken us on several wonderful road trips through the West. Below I've tried to be as clear as possible about the pros and cons of the van. As the pictures show, the interior is in great shape for the age of the vehicle. As far as the exterior is concerned, there is a dent in the sliding door and adjacent panel. There is also some rust, a product of it living outside in Kansas. I've done much work on it myself over the years. But when I've needed a mechanic, I've always used Das Autohaus in Lawrence, KS--a VW specific shop that has been in business for many decades. Receipts for all work are available. PROSNew water pump (September, 2014)Alignment (September, 2014)Four new control arm bushings (July, 2014)Hancook tires purchased June, 2013 with only 9100 miles on themNew battery (December, 2013)New belts (April, 2013)Both window regulators replaced in last five yearsCurt trailer hitchBilstein shocks12 volt adapter installedAdditional seals and hoses installed in the past two yearsOil changed every 3000 miles with Mann filtersStainless steel coolant pipes designed by Terry Kay (replaced plastic pipes that notoriously plagued Vanagons. These will never wear out.)Includes Bentley factory repair manual (sells from anywhere between $50-$100)Spare tire and jack CONSThe oil pressure light has been coming on occasionally for the past four months. I have replaced both oil pressure switches but the light does still activate from time to time. The van loses no oil, however.Dent in sliding door and rear panel as mentioned and shown in pictureRust as shownThe van needs a new muffler. I have, however, replaced numerous exhaust parts including the tailpipe and collector pipe in the past two years. The A/C is functional but needs to be charged.Could use new speakers but the van does have a Pioneer CD player.
