I purchased this car as a project that the previous owner passed away before completing. The previous owner had owned the car since 1966 and had the car stolen in 1972. The car was recovered quickly but the thieves had banged it up pretty good. James (the previous owner) decided at that time to restore the car. He worked at Woodland Hills Volkswagen as a mechanic since the 60's and was an avid V.W enthusiast. James collected parts for almost 30 years before he took the car into paint. He had what seemed like three of everything, all German good quality parts down to every nut and bolt! When I purchased the car it was two toned, sitting on Porsche wheels with scat seats and a roll bar ready to be installed. Although I share James's passion for the hobby I had a different vision when it came to getting this car back on the road. I began by painting the entire car black, adding a brand new set of 5 American Classic radial White Walls and searched down the correct original seats to be redone in Brick Red with off white piping. Upon restoring the car I got to know it very well. James did a lot of tedious upgrades on the car making it more of a comfortable and reliable driver. So the theme was to make the car look as stock As possible to the passers by but underneath it is anything but stock. The electrical system was upgraded to 12v, 2 speed wipers were added instead of the typical voltage drop. The motor is a 1776 with dual Solex carbs producing more than twice the original horsepower. The transmission is a freeway flyer with slightly longer axels than stock, with a sway bar set up both front and back This makes for a much more comfortable safer ride and adds significantly to cornering as well as reduces lean while cornering. The brakes are also more modern coming from a 68 so not only do you have a safer ride with more stopping power but you don't have to search for expensive Oval Window brakes. This car cruises along at freeway speeds comfortably with no hesitation. The motor is a new not rebuilt core that runs amazing and has that little extra h.p to keep up with today's cars.. The interior was completely redone, door panels and seats are brick red with off white piping, new TMI carpet kit and TMI mohair headliner. Steering wheel is the correct original repainted. If you are familiar with this era of Beetles you know that a fuel gage was an "accessory" at this time and that these cars had a reserve lever allowing an extra gallon of gas after you ran out. This is present in the car and works perfect. The correct date stamped 56 rebuilt Speedometer shows 250 miles which I have driven the car to get all of the bugs worked out. I enjoyed restoring this car and with it's unique story it willBe a hard one to let go but I have another project waiting so I am auctioning it off for someone else to enjoy!
