Vehicle Detail
1968 Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport Doesn't every red blooded American man or woman want a shiny Black on Black classic Camaro? These first generation Camaro's are some of the most highly sought after muscle cars on the planet. A Black on Black one doesn't come around too often. I have been a Cutlass/442 guy for almost 40 years, and I know nothing about Chevy's. I'm selling this Camaro for my buddy who had it stored in his garage since right after his high school years. I will point out everything I know about this classic Chevy through what my friend told me, and what I've found out while setting this rare car up for sale. This is believed to be an original 4-speed true Super Sport. This first generation Camaro has not seen the light of day since 1992. This classic was pulled out of the garage in February after 22 years of storage and placed right into the paint shop. This Camaro does have an original steel hood with the chrome vents, and the cool rear trunk spoiler. Every panel looks to line up really nice, and the hood opens and closes with ease. The body was gone over and prepped for the paint work that was done with three coats of Ebony black basecoat followed by three coats of Matador red for the cool Super Sport stripes, and then three coats of clear coat. The paint was then wet sanded at three different levels of 1000, 1500, and 2500 grit, and then buffed to bring out the mirror shine as evident by the pictures. This is a very nice drivers quality paint job. Some people may look at it, and consider it show quality, but I personally do not. There is brand new drip rail chrome on both sides of the Camaro. My buddy said when he got this sweet Camaro it already had the high performance 1966 Corvette 427 cubic inch engine with 425 horsepower. This engine is not original to the body. I didn't know him back then, but let's just say he must have had a lot of fun in high school! The mileage on the body has rolled over once, but he was told the mileage on this Big Block Corvette engine was low when it was placed into the Camaro. I will check any numbers for anyone who requests them to verify it to be what it is. This Black Beauty was his pride and joy back then, but times have changed, and he is finally willing to part with it. This high horsepower Big Block has a steel crank, roller rockers, roller lifters, roller cam, rectangular port heads with a 4-bolt main. It has an Edelbock aluminum intake manifold, an Edelbrock carburetor, Mickey Thompson aluminum valve covers, an Accel high output coil for maximum spark, and a Mallory unilite distributor. The alternator belt was just replaced along with new antifreeze, and then a fresh set of A/C Delco spark plugs. This beast then started right up, and the engine sounds strong. It currently runs with open headers, and it sounds wicked to say the least. It does need a new ignition switch to start it with the key, and the trunk lock will need to be re-keyed. The engine was cleaned and detailed, and a new Exide battery was installed back in February when it first came out. This classic has been sitting for many years, so to make this Camaro roadworthy again, I would suggest changing all the fluids. The only road time that has been put on the car was to drive it around the block to make sure the transmission shifts, and then to go shoot the pictures. According to my buddy there is a beefy 4.11 positive traction 12 bolt rear-end. There were new ball joints in the front suspension, and the rear suspension has air shocks, so it sits nice and level. This Super Sport does have front disc brakes, although the brakes will need to be gone through before it will be safe to drive. It can be loaded onto a trailer though, but the brake pedal is stiff. A brand new gas tank was installed when it came out of the garage with a new neck, and a new SS gas cap. The black high bucket seats, and the rest of the interior still appears in relatively nice condition, although one seam is split in the headliner. I do believe that could be repaired, but that repair will be left for the next owner. The inside door skins are still in nice shape too. The dash pad looks really nice, and it was never all cut up to fit aftermarket stereos like was typically done back in the day. There is an old school AM/FM 8-track player mounted with some Alpine speaker covers on the rear package tray, but no speakers are under the covers. Thus, no tunes, so the stereo preference will be left up to the lucky winner. A very nice 1968 Camaro owner's manual is included in the glove compartment. As all you Camaro guys out there can see, this shifter is from a 70-81 Camaro. However I believe it has the proper 4-speed console. We didn't purchase the proper horseshoe shifter, because we are fairly certain that whoever wins this black beauty will want to change it back to a 4-speed. I never understood why people switched high performance muscle cars from a manual to an automatic, but apparently that was what happened to this one in a prior ownership. The small brake pedal is still in place, so keeping the proper 4-speed console made the most sense to us. This way the new owner won't have to try and find the right console to make this brute factory correct. While I was cleaning this Camaro to prepare it for this quick 5-day "No Reserve" auction, a gentleman saw it out front and stopped by who claimed to know Camaro's. He said that from everything he saw this is a true Super Sport. He told me several of the options that the real Super Sports had. He said he knows the NOR in the data plate would be the first sign of a true Super Sport, and the shoulder seat belts, along with the head rests on the bucket seats were a couple more hints of a genuine Super Sport. Furthermore, he said he felt by the looks of the two chrome hood inserts this Camaro is most likely an original SS396 car, because of the four simulated carburetion stacks. I also heard that the positioning of the heater hoses shows that this is a 396 car. I'm sure a lot of guys out there know a lot more than what I've been told. The black carpet was new in the 90's before this Camaro Super Sport went into hibernation, so it still looks in great shape. There is a brand new set of four black carpeted floor mats. There is a set of four raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with nice tread mounted on 15 inch Chevrolet Rally wheels with all four beauty trim rings, and all four original center caps not the aftermarket replicas. I've never had this car up on a lift, but from what I can see, I would suggest a nice sanding of the undercarriage, and a coat of low gloss black under the car would be a good idea. The trunk had some minor patchwork done years ago, but appears in good condition. The trunk pan was coated with A/C Delco black and aqua spatter spray to make it appear factory correct. There is a new trunk gasket. A new trunk mat was placed on top of the trunk floor, and the spare tire is an old belted ply tire that still holds air, but I wouldn't trust using it. This car is being sold with an open, clean, and clear Wisconsin title in my buddy's name that was issued in 1990, but he had really owned it since sometime in 1987. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide that anyone can look up on-line has the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro with a 427 engine, and the Super Sport package valued at $77,875 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $37,800 in average condition, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! In my opinion this car is in much better than what Nada classifies a car as average condition. I personally believe this rare gem is very capable of reaching the higher end of the average price range if the new owner used some elbow grease, and some spare time, and brought this car back to where it needs to be, but it would definitely need to be converted back to a 4-speed. These First Generation Camaro's have consistently shown to escalate in value with each quarter. Whether you had one as a youth and would like to recapture that glory or you just want to drive around a bank account, this may be the classic you've been dreaming of. Everywhere you drive these cars people are attracted to them like a magnet. These cars are getting harder and harder to come across. Especially one in this color combination. To bring this Camaro to this point took a bunch of time, money, and effort preparing the Super Sport you see listed in this description. What you see is exactly what you get! I know my auctions can be a little long winded, but I always try to describe all of the pertinent information, so any potential bidder can make the most informed decision possible before placing their bid. I am a brutally honest person, so if there is anything else you feel I may have missed, please ask me any question you like. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. Please have all your funds in order prior to placing any bids. This sale will need to be paid in full within 72 hours of the end of the auction. This cool All-American classic muscle car is being offered at "No Reserve" on a quick 5-day auction ending Sunday evening at 5:00pm Pacific time, 7:00pm Central time, and 8:00pm Eastern time. Thank You for taking the time to view my auction! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!
