Vehicle Detail
1968 Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport Doesn't every red blooded American man or woman want a shiny Black on Black classic Camaro? These first generation Camaro's are some of the most highly sought after muscle cars on the planet. A Black on Black one doesn't come around too often. I have been a Cutlass/442 guy for almost 40 years, and I know nothing about Chevy's. I'm selling this Camaro for my buddy who had it stored in his garage since right after his high school years. My feedback means a lot to me, so I will try to be as accurate as possible just like if I were selling one of my cars. I will point out everything I know about this classic Chevy through what my friend told me. This is believed to be an original 4-speed true Super Sport. This first generation Camaro has not seen the light of day since 1992. It was pulled out of the garage in February after 22 years of storage and placed right into the paint shop. This Camaro does have an original steel hood with the chrome vents, and the cool rear trunk spoiler. Every panel lines up really nice, and the hood opens and closes with ease. The body was gone over and prepped for the paint work that was done with three coats of Ebony black basecoat followed by three coats of Matador red for the cool Super Sport stripes, and then three coats of clear coat. The paint was then wet sanded at three different levels of 1000, 1500, and 2500 grit, and then buffed to bring out the mirror shine as evident by the pictures. This sweet body is virtually laser straight, and the reflections in the paint speaks volumes on how nice we believe it looks. Brand new drip rail chrome was just ordered and installed on both sides of the Camaro. My buddy said when he got this sweet Camaro it already had the high performance 1966 Corvette 427 cubic inch engine with 425 horsepower. This engine is not original to the body. I didn't know him back then, but let's just say he must have had a lot of fun in high school! The mileage on the body has rolled over once, but he was told the mileage on the Vette engine was low when it was placed into the Camaro. I will check any numbers for anyone who requests them. I never knew Camaro's, so I have no idea where to look. This Black Beauty was his pride and joy back then, but times have changed, and he is finally willing to part with it. This high horsepower Big Block has a steel crank, roller rockers, roller lifters, roller cam, rectangular port heads with a 4-bolt main. It has an Edelbock aluminum intake manifold, an Edelbrock carburetor, Mickey Thompson aluminum valve covers, an Accel high output coil for maximum spark, and a Mallory unilite distributor. We were able to get it started after all of these years with a few squirts of starting spray. It's currently set up with open headers, and it sounds like a beast to say the least, but it needs a new ignition switch to start it with the key, and the trunk lock will need to be re-keyed. The engine was cleaned and detailed, and a new Exide battery was installed back in February. To make this rare Camaro roadworthy again, I would suggest changing all the fluids, and it will need the alternator, fan belt, new pipes, mufflers, and tail pipes. I would suggest putting some flowmasters for the mufflers. They always have that nice rumble. According to my buddy there is a 4.11 positive traction 12 bolt rear-end. There were new ball joints in the front suspension, and the rear suspension has air shocks, so this sweet Camaro will sit level if a little air is let out. We just aired them up to see if they still hold air, and they do. I just forgot to let some air out for the pictures. I think these cars look much tougher when they sit level. This Super Sport does have front disc brakes. A brand new gas tank was installed when it came out of the garage with a new SS gas cap. The original interior still appears in relatively nice condition, although one seam is split in the headliner. I do believe that could be repaired, but that repair will be left for the next owner. The dash pad looks really nice, and it was never all cut up to fit aftermarket stereos like was typically done back in the day. There is an old school AM/FM 8-track player mounted with some Alpine speakers in the rear deck lid, but not hooked up, so the stereo preference will be left up to the lucky winner. A very nice 1968 Camaro owner's manual is included in the glove compartment. As all you Camaro guys out there can see, this shifter is from a 70-81 Camaro. However I believe it has the proper 4-speed console. I recently had the opportunity to swap out this console to a 67-69 Camaro expert at the Jefferson swap meet last weekend. I was an hour and a half away, so I debated going back on the last day to make the switch. That vendor said if I brought this 4-speed console back, he would swap me for the correct horseshoe shifter, and the console that has the center plate for an automatic. I thought about it, but after talking to my buddy, we decided to sell this car with the original 4-speed console. We are fairly certain that whoever wins this black beauty will want to change it back to a 4-speed. I never understood why people switched high performance muscle cars from a manual to an automatic, but apparently that happened to this one. The small brake pedal is still in place, so keeping the proper 4-speed console made the most sense to us. This way the new owner won't have to try and find the right console to make this brute factory correct. While I was cleaning this Camaro to prepare it for this quick 3-day auction, a gentleman saw it out front and stopped by who claimed to know Camaro's. He said that from everything he saw this is a true Super Sport. He told me several of the options that the real Super Sports had. He said he knows the NOR in the data plate would be the first sign of a true Super Sport, and the shoulder seat belts, along with the head rests on the bucket seats were a couple more hints of a genuine Super Sport. Furthermore, he said he felt by the looks of the two chrome hood inserts this Camaro is most likely an original SS396 car, because of the four simulated carburetion stacks. I'm sure a lot of guys out there know a lot more than what I've been told. The black carpet was new in the 90's before this Camaro Super Sport went into hibernation, so it still looks in great shape. There is a brand new set of four black carpeted floor mats. There is a set of four raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with nice tread mounted on the Chevrolet Rally wheels with all four beauty trim rings, and all four original center caps not the aftermarket replicas. The trunk had some minor patchwork done years ago, but appears in good condition. The trunk pan was coated with A/C Delco black and aqua spatter spray to make it appear factory correct. There is a new trunk gasket. A new trunk mat was placed on top of the trunk floor, and the spare tire is an old belted ply tire that still holds air, but I wouldn't trust using it. This car is being sold with an open, clean, and clear Wisconsin title. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide that anyone can look up on-line has the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro with a 427 engine, and the Super Sport package valued at $77,875 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $37,800 in average condition, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! In my opinion this car is in much better than what Nada classifies a car as average condition. They have the lowest condition value at $20,037 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car. I personally believe this rare gem is very capable of reaching the higher end of the average price range if it were converted back to a 4-speed. These First Generation Camaro's have consistently shown to escalate in value with each quarter. Whether you had one as a youth and would like to recapture that glory or you just want to drive around a bank account, this may be the classic you've been dreaming of. Everywhere you drive these cars people are attracted to them like a magnet. These cars are getting harder and harder to come across. Especially one in this color combination. It took a bunch of time, money, and effort preparing the Super Sport you see listed in this description. What you see is exactly what you get! I know my auctions can be a little long winded, but I always try to describe all of the pertinent information, so any potential bidder can make the most informed decision possible before placing their bid. I am a brutally honest person, so if there is anything else you feel I may have missed, please ask me any question you like. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. This cool All-American classic muscle car is being offered at "No Reserve" on a quick 3-day auction ending Sunday evening at 5:00pm Pacific time, 7:00pm Central time, and 8:00pm Eastern time. Thank You for taking the time to view my auction! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!On Oct-03-14 at 14:06:23 PDT, seller added the following information: Great News!!! My mechanic put an alternator belt on the 427 today. He also put new anti-freeze in the radiator, and we fired up this big block. It started right up! It did have a miss, so we replaced the plugs with all new AC Delco plugs. The engine runs great and sounds strong, so it will be able to be driven onto a car carrier. The brake pedal is a bit hard, so I'm sure the brakes will need to be gone through. I really wanted to post this Camaro as a running car, but I didn't want to mention anything until it were factual, so I sure hope all of the people that already viewed the auction will come back and see the good news. On the downside, there are no Alpine speakers in the back. I just noticed today there are just Alpine speaker grills mount on the package tray.
