Vehicle Detail
1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 W-30 Convertible This Oldsmobile up for auction is the perfect classic droptop to enjoy the rest of the summer and fall weather. I can't see anyone not loving this car at first sight! This is the type of car that even after you park it, you can't help yourself from turning around to take another look at it as you're walking away. These 1970's muscle cars have incredible investment potential, and have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. Remember, When the top goes down, the price goes up! According to the previous owner, this Olds does have the original numbers matching Rocket engine, and I double checked to make sure. He was telling the truth! The last seven digits of the vehicle identification number are on the block. This is absolutely the numbers matching block that was meticulously detailed to resemble a W-30. According to the OldsFaqs website, only 1,025 of the Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible models were made with an automatic transmission in 1972. This Red droptop is a very rare and highly sought after model. This particular 1972 Oldsmobile was made to look like a Cutlass Supreme/442 W-30 convertible. Whether this model is a real 442 or a converted Cutlass Supreme it is still considered to be like a real 442 if it is converted properly. If it were a real W-30 it would have an X in the vehicle identification number. The fender wells were only red on the very first 10 1972 W-30's that rolled off the assembly line in December of 1971, so I left the original black fender wells on this car. I'll give a little background on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and 442 models. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealership as a true 442. This is easily verified by the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up online. The 442 could be ordered as a separate model for the last time in 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. The OldsFaqs website makes the statement that there is no such thing as a fake 442 in 1972. All 1972 442 convertible models started life as a Cutlass Supreme, since the 442 was an ordered option. Whether the car was factory ordered as a 442, or dealer installed, or a private owner installed all the 442 options, they are all considered Cutlass Supreme or Cutlass S bodies. This is why all 1972 442 convertibles have Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door, and all 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door. This model comes with original 1972 factory 442 grilles. This Olds is steered with the awesome 442 sport wheel that can be adjusted to whatever height you prefer with the factory tilt wheel. This car starts right up and runs awesome. It drives down the road straight as an arrow with fingertip control. There is also a power trunk inside the glove box. It is very hard to find a Matador Red 442 convertible with White stripes, a White convertible top, and White interior in this condition. Everyone who knows these cars, knows that this color, and interior combination is the most popular, and most desirable. The hood is a genuine GM steel framed hood, and the whale tail is heavy enough to be an original, but I can't say for sure. I've seen a many of them over the years, and this whale tail looks and feels like an original. The doors still open and close like back in 1972. The fenders, quarter panels, and trunk lid are all in very good condition. This Olds was ordered with the factory undercoating as shown by the picture with the black plug inside the door jamb on the drivers side, so I believe that's why it held up in this condition. The body is freshly painted in three coats of basecoat with the correct code 75 Matador red followed by the white W-30 stripes, and then three coats of clear coat. It was then wet sanded at three different levels of 1000, 1500, and 2500 grit, and then buffed to bring out the mirror shine as evident by the pictures. I've been told by everyone who sees this car, that the paint work on this convertible looks spectacular. There will be endless compliments coming to whoever is the lucky winner of this rare classic. I recently drove the car to Chicago to have the dual exhaust work done with new chrome exhaust tips. There were people racing up to me just to yell what a nice car this is. That is how much attention this car will bring to anyone behind the drivers wheel. The convertible top had some professional repair work done, and does have a back glass window. The top is not perfect, but I would say it should be good for a couple of seasons, and then the new owner may want to replace it. The hydraulic lines were recently bled, so the top goes up and down very fast, and works properly through the switch on the dash. There is a white California convertible top boot included in the trunk. That can be placed over the top when the top is down in the well. I tried to replace all of the factory decals in the engine compartment, and under the trunk lid to make this Oldsmobile appear the way it would have rolled out of the factory onto the showroom floor back in 1972 as a brand new W-30. I've owned many of these over the past 35 years, and I used up the best parts I had recreating this sweet looking red beauty. The front and the rear floor pans are the originals and have never been replaced. I believe the carpeting is original and still looks decent, but there is one small worn out spot under the front drivers floor mat. Although with a new set of four black carpeted floor mats the inside appears very nice. I have to say when you're in the drivers seat looking out the factory tinted windshield over those two bold hood scoops, a smiles just appears on your face. This Olds rides on a set of four P245/60R15 inch Goodyear Eagle GT raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with good tread mounted on Super Stock II wheels painted to match the body color. These cars always ride best on 15 inch wheels. All four wheels have new chrome lug nuts, all four center caps, and all four beauty trim rings. There is a 10 bolt rear-end, but I am unsure of the gear ratio. This Olds sits up just right with new rear springs. The original trunk floor had some minor repair, and was then coated with A/C Delco factory Black and Aqua spatter spray for the trunk to stay in nice condition for many years to come. The inside of the trunk even has the trunk light option with a new trunk mat that carries a full size Super Stock II spare with the original restored jack and crow bar. This way if there is ever a mishap on the road with a quick tire change you can be back on the road in minutes looking complete. The chrome is in good drivers quality condition or better. Both bumpers have the factory ordered bumper guard option. Even the original front license plate bracket is still on the front bumper. All three of the belts have been replaced. This convertible was ordered from the factory with the rare air conditioning option. It seems to be all hooked up, but I never gave it a charge. I'm certain it is still on the old R-12 system, so finding that Freon will be up to the new owner. The new belt has the compressor spinning well. The majority of people didn't order A/C back in the day, since they had the option to put the top down. It is always nice to at least have that option to give it a charge to see if it works if the next owner would like. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to switch it over to the R-134 system, but I've never done that, so I can't say for sure. The original dash pad is in very nice shape, and I couldn't find any cracks anywhere. It still has the chrome around the edges of the dash, which usually disappeared over the years. The stereo is a Pioneer Super Tuner AM/FM CD player with a pair of speakers behind the rear seat, and a new front speaker under the dash. This way everyone in the car can actually hear music when the top is down. The front bucket seats were recently reupholstered and the whole interior looks in relatively nice condition as shown in the pictures. Fortunately this convertible survived having the rear panels all cut up for speakers, like were typically done back in the day. This Olds was factory ordered with power steering, power disc brakes, power trunk, and a power convertible top. Steering these cars is simply a delight, and stopping them with power disc brakes is always wonderful. The wipers work on both speeds with new wiper blades. All the head lights, bright lights, all four tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, all four cornering lights, emergency lights, and even the license plate light all work as they should. The turn signals both shut off properly when a turn is made. The speedometer and odometer work properly, and the gas gauge is accurate. The horn, lighter, and clock do not work, but the clock is set on the best time of the day. It's always 4:42 time!! The entire dash bezel lights up as it should. There is a factory Oldsmobile vanity mirror on the passenger side sun visor. The original owner's manual, emissions control systems warranty information, and the consumer information pamphlets come in the original plastic case inside the glove box. An exorbitant amount of time, money, and effort went into making this classic convertible into tip top condition. These older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find in this condition. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 W-30 Convertible with the air conditioning option listed at $63,990 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. $41,445 in average condition, which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! As shown in the pictures this Olds Convertible is in far better condition than what they classify as an average condition car, and it really does look sweet up close. They have the lowest condition value at $27,540 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. Why not enjoy the same looking convertible for a fraction of those prices. No one will know that this is not a genuine W-30 except the new owner and me. I'm not telling anyone!! This is a true red beauty that I can't see anyone being disappointed with. As can be seen in one of the pictures, I even had a gentleman in a white van that just had to turn around while I was trying to shoot the pictures, just to say what a nice car this is. I believe everywhere this car is driven, you will be the spectacle of the neighborhood. Whatever this classic convertible sells for in this no reserve auction is a win/win investment. This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have shown to consistently escalate in value. These GM A-Body muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. This car is for the guy or girl that always wanted one back in high school, or maybe wants to show off at their high school reunion to prove how cool they still are. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 convertible. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. I know my descriptions can be a little long winded, but I try to list everything I can think of when I write a description, so every potential bidder can make the most informed decision prior to placing their bid. If you feel I may have left anything out please ask as many questions as you like. I pride myself in answering every question in explicit detail with the utmost honesty. What you see is exactly what you get! This car is being offered at "No Reserve" on a 3-day listing. It will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening at 5:00pm Pacific, 7:00pm Central, or 8:00pm Eastern time depending on your location.
