Vehicle Detail

What makes this car special? Type W111 coupes are beautiful cars providing a nice old-car flair. Highly sophisticated for their time with fuel injection, all independent suspensions and disk brakes all around, they are very reliable and drive like much more modern cars. The 280SE featured a stronger engine than the 220SE and 250SE; fitted with an oil cooler, it is considered bullet proof. For sale is a very interesting early (chassis number 30) 280SE high-grille coupe with only three owners from new, original mileage of 77,200. Being this early in the series, the car still carries the 14’’ wheels with the two-piece hubcaps of the earlier versions, all date-coded 11/67. The seats don’t have headrests, yet; those were introduced in 1969. Mechanically the car is in excellent condition; cosmetically it has needs, see below. Nicely optioned with leather, electric sunroof and power windows. History and numbers: The car was bought new by a Mercedes enthusiast (still wears old MBCA grille badges) in Massachusetts and since his passing in 2004 was owned by his son. The son was more interested in American muscle cars and sold the car to me in November 2007. Chassis # 111024-12-000030 Engine# xxx 12-000032 Gearbox # 000196 Options, per data code plate: 236 – Power windows 426 – Floor shift automatic 491 – US version 503 – Rear view mirror, left 518 – Radio Becker 531 – Retractable Antenna Color – 423 – Tobacco Brown Mechanicals The coupe is in excellent mechanical condition with $11,100 invested since 2008. All mechanical work was performed by a qualified Mercedes only shop whose owner (recently retired) ‘cut his teeth’ on these cars when he started working. As a result of the work performed and the new parts installed, the car runs and handles beautifully. Major expensive work was carried out to the suspensions and steering. The replacement of the engine mounts, sub frame and gearbox mounts proved to be a good decision, making the coupe run and shift so much smoother. Engine: All original spec with no modifications. Starts right up every time with no smoke ever. Runs nice and smooth with stable temperature and no unusual sounds. The engine drips small amounts of oil. Gearbox: Nice and smooth, shifts correctly, no unusual noises. The brakes have been regularly maintained and work as they should including the hand brake. The front suspensions have been substantially rebuilt and regularly greased; the steering box was rebuilt. Shocks have been renewed on all 4 corners and so have the tires. Details of work performed in my ownership, invoices are available and come with the car: 1/30/2008, mileage 71640, $1,248.96: New tie rods, valve adjustment, new steering linkage and damper, new brake lines, oil change 2/1/2008, mileage 71,753, $418.31: New Bridgestone tires 3/14/2008, mileage 72,919, $4,660.76, Kingpins and bushings installed, alignment performed, 4 new shocks, new exhaust header pipe, new plugs, points and air filter, new manifold gasket 9/15/2008, mileage 74,121, $1,594.90: New motor and sub frame mounts 5/8/2009, mileage not recorded, $87.71: Oil change and lube 12/4/2009, mileage not recorded, $65.77: New shift linkage bushing 2/10/2010, mileage 74,852, $1,682.93: Overhaul steering gearbox, mount new muffler, oil and lube 4/28/2011, mileage not recorded, oil and lube 4/25/2012, mileage not recorded, $1,300.00: New engine shock, new belts, new air and power steering filter, brake and power steering flush, fresh radiator coolant, oil leak fixed, oil and lube 4/21/2014, mileage 76,991, $63.72, oil and lube All systems work, with exception of the clock and the rear windows not lowering all the way. Body The body is straight with good shut lines. The doors, hood and deck lid open and close great. These cars have a tendency to rust in the rockers and in and around the trunk floor; and this car has rust in these areas, as well as in the radiator support. Other than that the car is solid. To come back to its full potential, the car needs to be painted. Some of the paint appears to be original, but the quarter panels, the roof and the deck lid have been repainted with a different kind of paint at some time. This paint is now cracking, see pictures. Chrome is good with the exception of the right rear bumper over-rider. Interior Leather: The driver’s seat has been recovered and is in great shape. The passenger seat is original leather with some tears. The back seat bench is original leather and in near flawless condition. The wood is all present, but the window surround will need refurbishing. All vinyl and carpets are in great shape; the headliner has some stains from age, but is in great shape otherwise. I added a set of original matching color MB tex arm rests. The car comes with: A clear Tennessee title Two sets of keys Instruction manual and an unused and unstamped service manual An incomplete set of tools and jack The invoices for service I outlined above A car cover The sale is not an easy decision because the car is beautiful, a real delight to drive and gets thumbs up wherever it goes from both enthusiasts and casual onlookers alike. But I’ve decided to sell it because I just do not have time for it and it hardly ever gets used. Questions and inspection are encouraged and welcome. Please do not bid if you don’t have the funds or intention to purchase the car. I will let the auction run its full course; please do not inquire about the reserve. No warranties are expressed or implied.
