This vehicle was sold by the GMC division of General Motors from 1992 to 1993. The Typhoon surprised critics and customers by displaying a level of performance that was not seen outside of performance cars, such as the Corvette and 300ZX, or expected of a SUV. Although the Typhoon enjoyed a brief run, it and its Syclone counterpart left an indelible mark on the minds of automotive enthusiasts and automotive history in general. The key to the Typhoon's performance was a 4.3-liter V6 featuring a Mitsubishi-sourced turbocharger and a Garrett water/air intercooler, with modifications made to the fuel system, intake manifolds, and exhaust manifolds to cope with the added power. The turbocharged engine was paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and it also borrowed a 48 mm twin-bore throttle body from the 5.7-liter V8 engine. All of these changes resulted in an engine that produced 280 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. The Typhoon could accelerate to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 5.3 seconds and perform a quarter-mile run in just over 14 seconds at 95 miles per hour. This was enough performance to give those in quite a few sports cars pause. Unfortunately, the Typhoon was electronically limited to a top speed of 124 miles per hour. The Typhoon, along with the GMC Syclone high-performance pickup, was based on the GMC Sonoma and Jimmy. These vehicles were manufactured by Production Automotive Services, Inc., an outfit that was also responsible for the 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am. Between 1992 and 1993, approximately 4,700 Typhoons were built. The Typhoon's engine is not related to the 3.8-liter turbocharged V6 used in the Buick Grand National and GNX. Unlike the Syclone, which was available from the factory only in black, the Typhoon was available in a few colors, including Apple Red, Royal Blue, White, and Black. Inside, the Typhoon sported a black leather interior with bucket seats. Standard features for the Typhoon included power steering, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, cruise control, tilt steering, and a 4-speaker AM/FM stereo with CD player.
