Vehicle Detail

1987 FORD F350 2WD 6.9L DIESEL PICK-UP TRUCK! Lariat, Crew Cab, Dually, Long Bed! This truck has been well taken care of by me since 1999 when I purchased it with about 122,000 miles on it.  It now has 197,640 miles on it.  The previous owner had the motor replaced at Ford’s expense at about 95,000 miles.  We used it mainly for pulling a fifth wheel camper for about ten years while our children were young, and after that, pulling our boat to the local boat ramp.  Occasional trips to the local dump or Lowes, and one trip to Florida to pick up a hot rod.  It’s been extremely reliable for us.  I’ve always changed the oil on a regular basis, and kept up with fuel filter changes.  I’ve tried to keep the interior clean and the paint in good shape.  I’ve waxed it on a regular basis (just got a wash & wax yesterday), and so often in fact, that some of the sharp angles on the body I’ve actually worn the paint down to the metal, but it’s so covered with wax these bare spots won’t rust!  You can tell from the pictures that this truck has no dents on the body, it’s never been hit or in an accident of any kind.  Except for a couple of small paint scratches that have surface rust, the body is perfectly solid.  In fact, if you look at the picture of the roof, you can see that it has no rust, and that’s one place that typically rusts first. This truck is a beast - I’ve taken scrap metal to the scrap yard and weighed in at over 12,000 lbs, and the truck only weighs about 6,700 lbs.  “Built Ford Tough” should have a picture of this truck. Kenwood AM/FM/CD player with removeable face and two remotes.  Electric windows that both work. Electric door locks that all work (passenger door lock switch doesn’t work, but all locks operate from the driver’s door).  Glass is all good,  carpet and upholstery is good with no rips (exception of the one picture that I show you along the top of the seat), no dirt or stains.  Bed of the truck is SOLID.  It doesn't look pretty, but there is no rust or deterioration. There are a few drill holes from where a 5th wheel trailer hitch had been mounted and the black coloring that you see wearing off is from a home-kit spray in product that I had used when I first bought it.  Cruise control works.  Air conditioning blows cold, heat blows hot. This truck runs very well, starts up every time.  These old International 6.9l diesel engines are solid as a rock and run forever.  They are very simple motors; no turbochargers, no electronic anything on them to fail; mechanical injection, mechanical rotary pump.  It’s rated at 175hp & 318 ft. lbs. torque.  The mileage that I got was between 10 mpg and 12 mpg, depending on what I was pulling and how fast.  Slightly better mileage around town.  The transmission is the Ford C6 three speed, which has never even hiccupped for me.  This is one of the best transmissions ever made. I have a K&N air filter on it, and I’ve cleaned and re-oiled the filter regularly.  New battery in mid-2012 and another new battery in late 2013 (it has two batteries).  It has a gooseneck ball in the bed, but I’ve never used it, and couldn’t tell you how to flip it up. About eight years ago I removed all the injectors and had them cleaned and brought up to factory specs by a professional diesel service shop. I just replaced the front brake pads a couple months back and the rotors were within spec at that time. Rear tires are in good shape, you’ll need front tires within a few months; see the pictures. All lights and blinkers work. I have a full set of Ford factory shop manuals that will go with the truck.  The crane and winch are NOT included with the auction, but if you want them, I’ll sell them for $400 on top of the auction closing price.  I installed them last year to handle a jet-ski. It’s braced underneath the bed and also braced to the side of the bed, capacity on the crane is 1,000 pounds and the electric winch has about the same capacity.  The electric winch is controlled by a wired remote that plugs into a jack inside the bed. My honest assessment of this truck is that it will run for years to come, but if you plan long trips, you should probably look at replacing fuel lines and maybe some other rubber items.  I have no suspicions that any of them are about to fail, but remember, this truck is 27 years old. KNOWN ISSUES:      Small brake fluid leak, although I can’t find where.  I have to add a bit of fluid every couple months.  Master cylinder was replaced a couple of years ago.        Fuel gauges don’t work properly.  The gauge deflects, but the sensors in the tank are the problem; you can see them stay at full until a certain point, then they drop very fast.  So I just rely on the trip odometer to tell me when to switch tanks (it has two 18-gal tanks) or fill up. If you’re ambitious enough to drop the tanks, you can fix them easily enough.        The truck left the factory with rear anti-lock brakes, but the damn things were more of a hindrance than benefit, so last year when the control valve failed, I removed it, so the truck no longer has anti-lock brakes, just the plain ol’ fashioned, “stomp on ‘em and you’ll stop” brakes.  And because the control valve was removed, you won’t get the dash warning light that could fail a state inspection.        The radiator has a leak at the very top, although only while under pressure, so I’ve been running it with the radiator cap cracked and it’s been fine, it’s not leaking that way.         About ten years ago, the automatic glow plug timer solenoid died (it was kind of expensive for me at the time), so I replaced it with a standard starter solenoid and a momentary push-button switch beneath the dash, and I just depress that switch while the glow plugs warm up. When the glow plug light on the dash goes off, I start it.  Been completely reliable ever since.        Wiper wash motor isn't working. I never took the time to troubleshoot it, so it could be as simple as a fuse or a bad connection.         In one picture of the interior, you’ll see me point at part of the frame of the seat that has worn through the padding.  There are two such spots, right at the top behind where a front seat center passenger would sit.  It’s been that way since I bought the truck, and it looks like Ford just goofed and ran that support member too high.  Other than that, the interior is in great shape.         The tailgate is not in good shape. It’s wrinkled up, but it latches closed and does open, but you will probably want to replace it.  The handle is gone, and I have to reach inside to open it. I ran a CarFax report on the truck just before listing and will e-mail or fax you a copy of it upon your request.  Please ask any questions or ask me to take specific pictures if you like, I don’t want to hide anything. And in case you wonder why I’m selling it, I’m buying a 2010 F350 diesel.  Truck is located in central VA, just south of Richmond VA, easy on/off of I95. In response to a question that was asked about the condition of the A/C system:  The AC blows cold, I checked it the other day when it was about 65 degrees outside. The compressor and condensor was replaced maybe twelve years ago, and at time it was serviced professionally, since I don't have the equipment for that type of work to determine oil level. Since then, I've vacuumed it down, replaced the orifice tube and charged it again. It's been probably four years since I did that. No problems since. Bear in mind...this was built when a type of freon (was it R12?) that it used allowed for a colder AC than the replacement freons can achieve. So at idle, the cooling is minimal, but above idle, on the road, it blows cold. There's nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't compare to modern auto AC systems.
