Vehicle Detail
When you dream of riding, floating above the tarmac, transitioning from one turn to the next, effortlessly, like a bird soaring along the thermals, this motorcycle provides that sensation. You may capture some of that endorphin-releasing pleasure on other bikes, but even the slightest mechanical niggle will come between you and the realization of that dream. The creak of a rusty clutch cable, a sticky throttle, a noisy chain, a clattering clutch, an uncomfortable seat, an inadequate suspension, insufficient grip, poor ergonomics and lack of power will all conspire to diminish the ride you crave. This motorcycle suffers none of those shortcomings and brings you closer to the euphoric joy of riding than any other motorcycle. In fact, many BMW purists hold this bike out to be among the best motorcycles ever built. After being the proud owner of this beautiful, Pacific Blue example, I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree. So, it is with great trepidation and sadness that I place this special motorcycle up for auction on e-bay. I am 5’9”, 150 pounds and 58 years old and this R1100S fits me perfectly. It has handlebar risers and thick, foam-padded, heated, handlebar grips to relax my wrists and keep my extra-large hands warm. The electrical system is sufficient to support my heated jacket, gloves and pants, along with the HID high and low beam headlights that turn the darkness into daylight. The marker lights have been upgraded to remain on as daytime running lights for extra visibility. Automatic turn signal cancellation is programmable and is currently set at 11 flashes. The Motronic fuel injection system is a marvel and with the touch of a button, the bike will fire to life even after sitting for weeks at a time. This fast, light and sure-footed bike also stops on a dime with its exceptional, four-piston-per-caliper, anti-lock braking system that automatically proportions braking power simultaneously to the front and rear wheels when grabbing the front hand brake, while the foot brake pedal applies anti-lock braking exclusively to the rear wheel. As I am directionally challenged, I fitted the bike with the Garmin Zumo 550 GPS unit, black labeled exclusively for BMW. As a result, I never got lost and never ran out of gas. It provides wireless Bluetooth to helmet speakers with audio directions, music and cellular phone integration that is seamless. Its touch screen and push button operation is easily accessed while donning gloves and the screen is made especially to hold up to the elements and even splashes of gasoline (perish the thought!). I have kept all engine and drivetrain mechanicals in factory or stock configuration and have all maintenance records to demonstrate that the bike has been professionally maintained by the fine, expert mechanics at Hansen’s BMW in Medford, Oregon. In terms of cosmetic maintenance, I have washed and waxed this bike after almost every ride and it has been garaged all its life and never parked in the sun for any period of time without a motorcycle cover (a brand new cover is also included). This is evidenced by the bright, perfect condition of the paint. Cosmetic upgrades include powder coating of the exhaust header pipes to prevent unattractive heat bronzing. The wheels were powder coated white and a BMW center cap applied to the rear wheel. Custom tank gripper/protector pads were strategically placed to avoid any wear marks in the paint job. A front fender extender and rear Pyramid carbon-fiber wheel hugger were added to keep the undercarriage clean. The bike came with a carbon-fiber fender on the front, so it seemed only fitting to upgrade the dash panel, the turn signal housings and heel scuff guards to carbon fiber to complete its custom appearance. BMW roundel caps were placed over the swing arm pivot nuts in the center of the frame, along with BMW valve stem covers to finish it off. For a clean look and security, I added a high-quality, chrome and black, hex-key-locking, oil-filler cap on the head to replace the unsecure plastic factory cap. Also, you may note the addition of a Laminar Lip on the windshield. The Laminar Lip eliminates neck fatigue that occurs after hours of riding with the wind pushing your head back, and it eliminates the wind buffeting against your helmet that occurs when passing a semi-truck and trailer. The emissions canister was repositioned higher up into the framework for a cleaner look above the rear wheel. Custom-made gripper material was added on top of the rear seat cushion to prevent passengers from sliding forward during heavy braking. Optional factory cylinder-head guards were included, but thankfully have never been tested, as this bike has never been down. It also is fitted with a side kick-stand and a center stand. It has Michelin Pilot dual-compound tires with a few thousand miles of tread left on them (great tires), and I replaced the battery with a new gel battery. The cherry on top is the addition of the optional, large, BMW-System, hard travel cases that carry a surprising amount of gear and covered with reflective panels on the back for added visibility from the rear at night. If I still have your attention, you must be a motorcycle enthusiast and want to hear more. So, please allow me to add that I am the original owner and only rider of this fine machine since I bought it new in 2005. It has never been abused in any way and its appearance is practically new. There are a few minor pits in the rear wheel from typical pebble chips, but you have to look hard to see them and the windshield may have a couple minor pits, as well. Other than that, this bike is indistinguishable from new, although probably shinier, due to my fastidiousness and enjoyment of waxing it. As far as valuation is concerned, cyclists in the know understand what this bike is. Since 2005, BMW no longer produces such an exceptional, well-rounded, sport and touring motorcycle. You will not come across another bike that can comfortably hang with Ducati’s on the race track (even with BMW-System hard cases attached!), and also be able to feel that comfort after riding all day long. I have ridden for more than 1,000 miles in one day, stopping only for gas every 200 miles, without any significant discomfort. I have not confirmed this, but the dealer told me that there were only 50 R1100S models delivered to the US in Pacific Blue, making this bike even more collectible. I have documented well over $18,000 invested in this wonderful motorcycle. The highest bidder will be getting an amazing bike with all the options, but at a significantly lower price. Please bid with confidence, as I have a 100-percent positive feedback rating that I wish to maintain. Good luck bidding! On Jan-03-14 at 00:28:17 PST, seller added the following information: Included in the sale are two custom luggage bags that fit inside the BMW System hard cases. The bags are useful, so you do not have to remove and carry the hard cases into a hotel room. However, the hard cases mount and dismount very easily - unlock, lift up the carry handle and lift right off the bike. Also, I will include a battery tender for when you are storing the bike. I will be happy to assist the winning bidder with shipping arrangements and I am happy to store the bike for as long as you need, as it is safely parked and covered in my garage. I would prefer the winning bidder pay the total winning bid amount either immediately following the end of the auction, or by Monday, January 6. I can accept VISA, M/C, Discover and AMEX in my office, as well. I will provide an immediate bill of sale and overnight the clear title, as soon as funds have cleared.
