Looking back to the early 20th century classics, the Lincoln Model L was an exclusive portrayal of the brand that embodied American luxury, prestige and status. Bodied by coachbuilder John B. Judkins, the Model L was shaped into a truly exquisite vehicle that was noted for sturdiness, speed, all-wheel brakes and handling. They were favorites of both sides of the law. The flat-head V-8 engine has a 385 cubic-inch displacement developing 85 horsepower through a 3-speed manual transmission. Today, enthusiasts agree the Model L was equal to the finest pre-war vehicles in the world and very clearly established Lincoln as a top producer of luxury automobiles. If you could afford a shiny new Lincoln in 1929, you truly had climbed an exalted plateau in life. The magnificent 1929 Lincoln L Sedan featured here is an exceptional, heirloom quality collector car. It survived 80 years, WWII, the "throw away anything old" society of the 1950s, termites, wildfires, tornados, and inept mechanics--completely unharmed. It was never involved in an accident, never suffered from any rust damage and nearly all original features are still intact, including its interior, coachwork and brightwork. According to the Lincoln Automobile Record received from The Henry Ford Museum: Body Type #169 A No-10-533 was one of only 947 Lincoln 5-Passenger, 2 Window Town Sedans built in 1929. A very rare car indeed. This number # 58529 stamped on the engine block is also the serial # and tell us that assembly was completed on June 10, 1929 at Lincoln Motor Co assembly plant and the car was shipped to Long Beach, CA on July 17th, 1929. This is a documented, original, numbers matching, California classic. This service sticker from Mabel Frye Motor Service in Los Angeles, CA was placed on the car on December 27th, 1956 indicaing 72,711 miles. With 77,000 miles are on the odometer today, the car has only covered 4,200 Miles in the Last 56 Years! Let's inspect this bona fide survivor now in great detail, inside and out, top to bottom. You'll rarely encounter more beautifully preserved, all original coachwork. Certainly not on a car that's nearing a Century in age! The body appears free of filler ("bondo"), arrow straight, with perfectly aligned doors and hoods. There is no corrosion to be found, either. This Lincoln bears the mute, ineffable dignity of a truly original treasure; we'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Black is the behemoth's original color accented by gleaming chrome trim, the nitrocellulose lacquer finish is amazingly lustrous; sensuous would perhaps be a more fitting description. The greyhound emblem and exquisitely preserved, chrome brightwork appears original. Aside from some minor pitting, it displays a warm patina that gives testimony to Lincoln's superb build quality. Another period feature, the top-hinged windshield frame can be adjusted to allow in plenty of fresh air on warm days. Having always been lovingly polished by hand, there are a few small spots where the original primer is starting to peek through, enhancing the fantastically authentic look of this genuine survivor. The 136 inch wheelbase chassis of the prestigious model might be the most desirable, offering all-weather motoring with its roll-up side windows and seating for 5 adult passengers. The coachwork of this fabulous example has persevered for over 80 years, remaining in superb condition, displaying excellent fit and finish throughout. Big, beautiful five-lug, 20 inch spoke wheels are fitted with FIRESTONE six-ply tires of the dimension 6.50 x 20. Also included are 2 optional dual side-mounted wheels and tires with factory correct canvas covers. Let's check out Lincoln’s interior now. Suicide doors open wide for easy entry, revealing a most sumptuous interior. Not a restored show car, this Lincoln possesses something money can't buy: character. The interior appears as delivered back in '29 and displays a lovely patina. There is minor discoloring but that would be no reason to perform any major surgery. The interior features a generous amount of space for five tall adults. An old car has to be allowed to age gracefully, and that's what happened here. Aside from the driver’s seat top, the wonderfully preserved mohair seats, door panels, wood trim tops and carpet appear 100% original and presentable. Rear seat and headliner appear original as well, 84 years old, not perfect in the most stringent meaning of the term, nonetheless perfect in our eyes. You can't bring back originality, at any price, no matter how hard you try. The richly woodgrained steering wheel of this '29 is pristinely preserved, featuring a horn button in the center, vacuum advance on the left, hand throttle on the right and a light switch on the bottom. Visible above is the wiper motor and dual rearview mirrors. Below are the floor shifter with Bakelite knob, emergency brake lever, and starter button. The metal dashboard has six instruments to help the owner-driver keep tabs on the goings-on. Gauges are original and unrestored; they still look great. Aside from the clock (which-like the car is timeless) they all seem to work, too! Made in America, with pride: Lincolns of the era were finished with great care; only the best materials were used. Let’s have a peak under the hood. Under the long hood, inside a very clean and tidy engine bay, resides Lincoln’s V8 358 cu.in. power plant, capable of 85hp @ 3,200rpm. Very modern for the time, the single-plate clutch transferred all that power through a 3-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. Upon start-up, no untoward noise or excessive oil spoils the great first impression! Overall, the car’s mechanics exude pride of ownership. Apart from the usual replacement of consumables, extracurricular work was limited to preventative maintenance; mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems. Over the recent years, some hoses, belts and switches were replaced, carburetor was serviced, fuel lines cleaned and plugs renewed. No wear item has been left unattended; as a result, this classic Lincoln is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Equally as important as good looks and working mechanicals is what lies beneath the shiny surface. Let's take a look at the car's undercarriage Lincoln looks very clean underneath. Massive axle "pumpkin" and leaf-spring rear suspension. Note the oversized brake drums and springs. Quality that's indestructible! Engine and transmission from below; No major leaks Not a speck of corrosion on the steel and wooden floor boards are free of termite or rot damage. Driving Experience: Thanks to the upgraded electric starter, (how modern!) firing up Lincoln’s vee-eight is easy: turn on the ignition key, set the hand throttle on the steering wheel, pull the choke and hit the starter button (next to the gas pedal). Voila! The engine starts almost instantly; after a few seconds, you push in the dash knobs and lower the throttle to enjoy an almost whisper-quiet, smooth idle. The driving position not only makes for excellent visibility, one also somehow feels calmed, above and beyond life's daily turmoil. Piloting a Full Classic like this Lincoln is a very special privilege only few will be able to enjoy. We say: do it while it's still possible! Driving this Lincoln will put a big smile on your face. Steering, transmission, brakes, suspension: everything works very well. All the lights work, too. A little smoke will build up after a long idle, (typical) but there is no overheating. You’ll always encounter countless admirers wherever you go. You’ll be in vintage motorist's heaven. Fine classic cars such as this Lincoln L are among today's hard assets that will always see their intrinsic value preserved. Cherished antiques, they can be used and shown with great satisfaction without having to worry about a "return on your Dollar." They'll always be valuable to true aficionados worldwide! It's quite a feat to survive 80 years in excellent health. This 1929 Lincoln L not only still looks fabulous, even more; it is ready to tackle the next 80! Not tarted-up or restored to a "better-than-new" standard, this rare, original sedan nevertheless exudes an air of quality and elegance lost on most lesser models. As the photos irrefutably prove, this beauty features perhaps the most important trait of any classic car: undamaged, unmolested coachwork. Add its superb interior, rich accoutrements, and turn-key reliability, and you have a winner! We hope you enjoyed this journey back to the twenties.
