Vehicle Detail
In 1970, the Trans Am was introduced, and due to the late introduction of the model, only 3,196 of the 1970 models were produced. Power was from a 400 cubic-inch Ram Air HO V8 engine offering 335 horsepower. The car weighed 4305 pounds. They had heavy-duty shock absorbers and springs, front and rear stabilizers, and power brakes and steering. Inside there were Rally gauge cluster, bucket seats, vinyl upholstery, and carpeting. There were front and rear spoilers, shaker hood, side air extractors, and aerodynamically styled outside mirrors. The standard transmission was a wide-ratio four-speed manual unit with Hurst floor shift controls. 1,769 examples had a manual gearbox and 1,398 were automatics. The Trans Am cars had white or blue finish with contrasting racing stripes. The Trans Am with its rear-breaking shaker hood scoop and deep front spoiler were on the main stage for the '70½ model year, along with its full-width rear spoiler and its front fender vents. This Trans Am was featured in either Polar White with blue tape stripes or Lucerne Blue with white tape stripes. Both colors features a relatively modest bird stencil at the edge of the nose and the words Trans Am spelled out across the rear spoiler. Buyers had the option of either the Ram Air III 400 V8 that produced 335 horsepower, or the optional Ram Air IV that produced 345. Four-speed manual was standard, while the suspension received immediate acclaim for 'providing the best handling of any American car– including the Corvette…' During that strange ½ model year, only a total of 3,196 Trans Ams were sold. The second generation of Pontiac Firebirds went on sale in February of 1970 as a '1970½' model. The second generation Firebird shared much of the general shape and engineering of the second-generation Camaro, though the Firebird kept its own fenders and wheel-well shapes. The Firebird also featured a very distinct plastic 'Endura' nose that completely surrounded the split grille and single headlamps that produced a bumper-less appearance. A muscle car with styling that seemed to have been hand-built in Italy, the second generation of the Firebird was absolutely stunning. The structure and chassis elements were also shared with the Camaro and were only an evolutionary development of the first generation. The front-subframe-bolted-to-unibody design was carried over along with the leaf springs on the solid rear axle and front A-arm suspension. The Firebird lineup for the '70½ year was divided into base, luxury-oriented Esprit, muscle minded Formula 400 and the intimidating Trans Am. The Pontiac OHC six at the base level moved aside for Chevy's 250-cubic-inch straight six and making a unimpressive 155 horsepower. Buyers had every incentive to step up to the V8's with such a basic base power-plant, and most customers went with this option. As the Pontiac Historical Ducumentation indicates. This care is a genuine Trans Am. One of 1,398 automatics. It was originally shipped as: 1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am DRIVETRAIN: 400 Cubic inch 6.6 litre engine with auto Trans EXTERIOR PAINT: Code C: POLAR WHITE INTERIOR: Custom Blue vinyl OPTIONS: - Pushbutton radio ($61.09) - Console ($58.98) - Soft Ray Glass ($32.65) - Air Conditioning ($375.99) -Custom Trim ($78.99) - MANUFACTURERS SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $5,015.37 The original engine had been replaced by a strong running 455 (7.5 liter) enigne with a quadrajet carb and auto trans with Hurst shifter on the console and a 12 bolt main rear end. Long tube headers with drag knock off plates run into true dual exhaust. It will need replacing from the headers all the way back. One muffler has exploded. The Air conditioning compressor has been removed. New fuel Tank and new sending unit. New Holley high perf electric fuel pump New carpet and floor sound insulation New triple chrome rear bumper and hardware New brakes all around Rebuilt instrument cluster with new circuitboard Aftermarket stereo functions The seats have been recovered in velour at some time in the past. They are functional as-is and the remainder of the interior appears complete and perfectly useable. The undercarriage frame and floor boards appear very solid. The trunk floor and all panels in front of, and behind, the trunk have extensive corrosion. To fully restore, this would all have to be replaced but operational as is. All weather seals are dry rotted or missing. Not really a concern since they need to be removed for painting anyway. Every body panel needs proper fitting and has some corrosion and/or bondo/glass repair. Depending on the level of restoration you want-most will have to have new skins or welded in patches to be perfect. I purchased this car with the intention of doing a full frame-off restoration but I simply do not have the necessary funds to pull it off. Fully restored examples are very rare and valuable. Price guides place them at $65-$80K in pristine condition. It would be worth it to the person with the skill and/or expertise to set this up as a show car. The other option is to freshen up the remainder of the mechanical systems, do some body work, a bargain paint job and you will have a great cruiser with lots of power and style. I am selling at no reserve. Check my feedack and bid with confidence that I honestly describe the products I sell. Payment: $500.00 non-refundable deposit due within 24 hours of auction close. Remainder in 10 days by cash or bank wire transfer. Can store indoors up to 30 days for you to arrange shipping. As-is no warrany of course Will assist in loading.
